Well g'day guys, so I'm out here in the beautiful New Zealand wilderness. I've just travelled by
boat deep up into fjordland and I've just been dropped off on this remote beach where I'm going
to spend the next three days exploring this beautiful place. I've got my park raft with me
as well as my fishing gear so we'll be paddling around the end of this fjord exploring the lake
as well as rivers in search for some monster trout. I think it's going to be an incredible
trip like just have a look at this place it is absolutely insane so I think you guys are
going to love this one. Oh man I'm so excited for this trip although I'm getting eaten alive by
sandflies already I literally just got here and they're absolutely swarming me they're even like
going through my hair it's gonna be a pretty brutal couple of days but it's a price you
gotta pay to spend some time in a place like this so I'll cop it. Have we got these sandflies
they are horrendous there's thousands of them oh I just look at my hand
that is insane and they're all biting oh man these things are nasty this is the worst I've ever seen
them. Now in terms of the weather for this trip we are meant to get some rain coming this afternoon
and it's meant to be potentially pretty heavy tonight tomorrow's meant to be pretty clear
and then the day after we're also meant to get some rain so what I might do first might get
camp set up so that way if it does rain unless I've got someone to shelter obviously this beach
is going to make a perfect campsite there's a nice flat section just there so I'll grab the
tent we'll get that set up. The sandflies oh this is gnarly it's gonna be a tough three days that's for sure
well one thing that I cannot get over is just how beautiful the New Zealand bush is
it's just so lush it's so green and vibrant and it's just like plants growing on top of plants
growing on top of plants all these trees are just covered in moss with a little
little sort of plants growing out of the moss it's just absolutely beautiful it's a very special
forest I've really come to love New Zealand over the last couple of years like if you're a nature
lover like myself especially if you love plants this place is like heaven it's just all the ferns
it's absolutely beautiful all right while the conditions are still nice how about we get the
raft pumped up and go for a bit of a paddle and a fish well hopefully the sandflies don't follow
me out here well the wind started to pick up now as well and of course it's starting to get a little
bit of rain but what we'll do is we'll just sort of like go for a bit of a paddle around the end of this
fjord here and do a bit of fishing we might even head up the river there as well and see if the
fishing's any good up there it's just nice to be back down the water it's a very beautiful place
to go for a paddle so just chucked one of these Tassie Devil lures on so we'll just draw this
did he get off oh no had a big strike
damn it we lost him well at least that's promising
man that is one hell of a backdrop honestly it feels like the land before time
imagine like dinosaurs around these lands looking up that valley is so beautiful
man what a hell of a place we losing oh no not again oh it's had the biggest strike
i swear he was on he was on this happened last time i was in NZ and i was using this Tassie lure
you tend to get big strikes but they never hook up so frustrating oh it's just started to rain
so i might start paddling back and we'll do a bit more fishing around camp and out the front
of that uh the river it's so peaceful out here makes me not want to go back to camp
because i know as soon as i step on that sand i'm gonna get actually swarmed by sand flies
well that rain has uh definitely set in i've just come around to the other side of the bay
i just paddled past the entrance to the river and i had the Tassie Devil sort of trawling behind
me but i didn't get any bites so i've just changed up to one of these little pilers
and i'll have a bit of flick around here and hopefully can grab something
if not they might um you go back to camp and sort of wait this rain out
for the moment it's actually quite nice um being on the water in the rain like the sand
flies aren't bothering me so i'm happy about that and let's just see if we can uh find a fish
well it's getting pretty heavy and i haven't had a bite for a while and i'm starting to get
pretty cold so i think i might head on back to camp and um yeah try and get dry and warm
if the rain clears up a little bit later we can always go for a fish then
well the rain is definitely set in for good though it's uh yeah pretty nice right now
there's like no wind it's beautiful and calm out on the water but i'm getting pretty cold
so i think i'm gonna hunker down in my tent for a bit try and get nice and warm and dry
well that was a punish trying to get in like a wet tent with wet gear is hard enough for the
best of days let alone when you've got a million sand flies inside the tent with you trying to like
jump inside the bug net without letting all the sand flies in and also just trying to keep your
bedding nice and dry and getting your wet gear off it's just chaos i've literally just spent like
the last half an hour trying to kill all the sand flies that have gotten inside the bug net but
we've got some dry clothes on now i think i've got most of the sand flies so yeah there's not
much to do now apart from i'm here just lay down wait for the rain to stop i'll have some um yeah
lunch but yeah i'm not gonna be doing a whole lot this afternoon until this um the rain bug is off
so i'll speak to you guys in a bit well just woke up from my nap it's about um eight o'clock so i've
been asleep for about four hours but yeah honestly like pretty much hasn't stopped raining the entire
time and i think i haven't even seen the worst of it yet i did screenshot the radar yesterday or
the forecast yesterday as you can see we've got some pretty heavy rain moving in at 10 o'clock
tonight so not much happening tonight unfortunately um i'll probably just cook up some dinner and try
and go back to bed uh the weather tomorrow is meant to be pretty nice i believe i hope you're
able to get um yeah a fair bit of fishing done should be a good day tomorrow that beautiful
beautiful sun far out that was a wet night that probably didn't stop raining for like
gosh like 12 or 14 hours or something like i got in that tent at 3 30 yesterday
had a four hour sleep woke up for three hours fell back asleep about 11 o'clock and then
you just got the tent just then about eight o'clock yeah i was in the tent for a long time
but uh it sure is nice sort of waking up to get some sun i just need to try and drive
my tent is absolutely soaked to the bone it's always a lot of my gear but i dare say i'm not
going to see that sun for quite a while until it comes over that mountain oh man so stoked
it's a beautiful day today can't wait to get back out in the water and i'm here to explore
the next little cove well i've broken out the big guns finally had to put the bug net on because
there are just so many sandflies i don't know if you guys can see this but there are like
hundreds of sandflies flying around my face they are absolutely gnarly out here
but for brekky just got some granola and uh yeah some milo i'll tell you what i'm so thankful
that we don't have to deal with sandflies in australia or like at least not to this level
i camp all over the place and i pretty much never have issues with bugs every now and then there
might be a night where i get some mosquitoes if i'm camping closer to the coast but they're
nothing like this hey it actually makes like campfire fight pretty tricky like i said last
night when it was pouring rain all i wanted to do is like jump under the tent get changed
it was so hard to do with like just dealing with the sandflies as well it's a real challenge out
here you guys can see that but that looks pretty yummy that's tasty anyway i'll finish off my
brekky and we'll get camp back down and we'll jump back over water and we're off well it is a
beautiful day to be out in the water today i'm so glad that sun has come out i'm a little bit late
getting on the water i think it's probably getting close to 11 o'clock i just wanted to try and dry
out all my gear on the beach in the sun before i hit the water so that way when i get to camp
it's not very everything's not um yeah absolutely soaking wet the good thing about new zealand
this time of year the sun sets around about 10 o'clock so i've still got plenty of daylight
so i've just put the tazzy devil back on but i have put a single hook rather than the treble hook
so hopefully have um yeah better hook up right with this all the waterfalls are definitely
pumping today there's a really nice waterfall up ahead probably a little bit of a paddle but
it'd be nice if we could make it over there and um yeah check it out looks pretty cool
oh hook up
am i on? i think we might be on oh no you're kidding again well i don't know what is happening
at least i got a strike my sandflies
so just paddling through the mouth of the river the water's pretty dirty and there's a lot of
as well i think after all the rain last night a fair bit of stuff has uh you washed down into
the lake which i'm hoping that means the fish might be a bit active and there's definitely
a lot of chop about today making for a bit of a rough paddle and that's unreal it's one of the
things i love about new zealand is this waterfall is absolutely everywhere i can't even see the
there's literally just like a sheer cliff just going straight into the water it looks so deep
let's see something a little bit like a little bit sketchy well not sketchy but
a little bit uneasy about paddling over water where like you just know
that it's bloody deep i think the deepest part is like about 450 meters
so at times like now that you just want to hope the packraft doesn't get a puncture because
if it did it would be a very very sketchy swim back
and that point there the wind has picked right up there's a lot of chop but tell you what
that scenery is beautiful absolutely epic what a world we live in let's go check out the view
around the corner unbelievable would have to be out there one of the most beautiful places i've seen
that is stunning well i think i've used pretty much every adjective imaginable to describe this
place but man it's unbelievable honestly speechless there's some places like in the
world you just go to and they just take your breath away and this is definitely one of them
nature honestly never ceases to amazing all right let's try and brave this wind and um
yeah make it over to the beach it's pretty damn windy
well it's definitely giving the arms a good workout weather for a wild place this is living
oh man i feel so alive right now i can't wipe this cheeky smile off my face
oh man the endorphins are running have a look at that you little ripper
all right we've made it to the beach we're gonna self-camp but rather than uh yeah some
camp now i might just go for a bit of a paddle around the um the end of this cove here maybe up
the river as well and just do a bit of fishing because uh yeah we haven't had a hold of luck
the trees lining the the benches here are beautiful
it looks so ancient man what a cracker of a day it is stunning it's nice and protecting
this corner as well yeah a beautiful day to be out on the water well this is the part of
the video where i should be catching lots of fish but it ain't happening all right we're on
about bloody time
what's that that's beauty
hey that's a bloody keeper that's great thank you so much buddy well i am so stoked to
yeah finally get one on the tally board and that is going to be a tasty dinner
we're on again oh oh you're kidding bloody lost him i'm just going to paddle up the river a little
bit and just uh yeah check out what's up there man what a spot around every corner this place
just keeps blowing me away it is beautiful yep we're on
oh it's making a big splash
oh you're kidding spat the lure oh that was a good size one as well
spewing well as much as it'd be nice to explore more of this river then we're going to head back
and we'll get camp set up all right i've just pulled the raft up i think i've uh splattered
a pretty good campsite yeah this looks nice got a good flat sort of grassy spot just up there
oh looks like people have camped here before a bit of a firing and more space to yeah sell the tent
this would be a nice spot so i'm just wandering around just having a look at the bush and plus
looking for some um dry firewood and tinder i've just come back i'm just behind the beach here and
have a go at it it's like i've just turned up the saturation volume everything is just
so green it's insane like all the moss on the ground is just like overtaking
everything all the fallen logs are just covered in moss you got all this um i don't know what
you call this kind of like old man's beard it's just hanging from all the branches it's just
it is alive this forest eh you can't even see a patch of dirt everything is just covered in
it's pretty incredible like have a go at the ground it's just completely covered in this
in this moss and it feels so nice to touch so spongy you would not want to get lost in here
this environment feels like so alien to me like coming from australia this place like couldn't
be any different and like the fact that like new zealand and australia are literally right next to
each other so close yet the bush here is a world away from australian bush it's completely different
like i've just been walking around trying to get some dry firewood and some tinder i can't even
find any tinder like at home there would be like all these like matt rushes and bracken ferns and
stuff like that that you can get nice dry tinder whereas here everything is just so green and lush
there's just like no dry material to actually get the fire started
all right so we're gonna get the fire started unfortunately i forgot to buy a lighter when i
arrived in new zealand luckily i do have some matches i do have my ferro rod but i'm struggling
to find a dry sort of tinder material so i can't really use my ferro rod so luckily i've got the
matches to hopefully be able to get these dry leaves started i've had these matches sitting
in my um my kit for years so i'm glad that actually i finally come in use oh man i don't
even know if you guys can tell but i am covered in sand flies right now absolutely covered oh this
is horrendous oh can't work in these conditions i don't know why i don't know if this is going to
work a little striking sort of plate it's not doing anything it's just uh look got this little
striking plate here and it's just let's just turn the matches to mush oh man honestly can you guys
see how many sand flies are on me it is insane it's actually insane all right oh man oh i'm dying
here i'm absolutely dying i've got one of these um storm proof matches let's see if this works
this striking plates got no friction to it when i strike it against here it's just
nothing's happening all right i've got one last idea which will definitely work yeah i know this
is going to be cheating but i've got my um soto windmaster and it's got a little ignition just
there magic well i know that's cheating but we've got to work with what we have
definitely not very bushcraft of me and you might be wondering why i just don't use the
the soto stove to cook up my trout and i easily could but i really want to cook it over a fire
so that's what we're going to do well hopefully this smoke keeps some of the sand flies away
i'm gonna douse myself in smoke smoke shower come get me guys come and get me
no actually don't don't come and get me
already i can notice the difference of the sand flies
man have a look at that fish that's such a rich sort of pinky orange looks so good cheers guys
has such a nice smoky flavor to it yum oh man i'm getting mauled alive i just can't get over
how many sand flies are on me i know i keep talking about it but they are just
all over me ah the price you pay to be out here eh well this is living being eaten alive by sand
flies while enjoying a beautiful trout in one hell of a place it's a big eel gone after all
the fish scraps that was cool i chucked the fish head just out there so he's obviously having a
so i think it's about 7 30 now some might um you pop the camera away but you can't uh you're hungry
away and get away from these sand flies and yeah listen to some music or a podcast so i'll see you
guys in the morning well good morning as you can hear the rain's back pretty much hasn't stopped
raining all night it's pretty heavy this morning as well we're getting uh picked up about 12 o'clock
today i think it's about um a quarter to nine at the moment there are about a million sandflies in
here with me i think every sand fly in new zealand has uh found its way inside my tent to get out of
the rain so it's going to be a bit of a challenge trying to pack up camp but that's new zealand for
you well i couldn't really stand to be in that tent for much longer so i was on the rain gear
i've come out to brave the rain which is definitely pretty wet it's gonna be sad to leave this place
it's not gonna be sad to leave the sandflies i'm happy about that but uh it is a pretty magical
place here very very special all right guys more packed up camp and that boat should be here any
minute now to pick me up so yeah it's been a hell of a trip hey i feel like new zealand has thrown
absolutely everything at me the last couple of days like from heavy rain to horrendous sandflies
but then to have like yesterday where it's just beautiful sunny weather looking into that yeah
lovely trout which are cooked up for dinner and then yeah just exploring this incredible landscape
it's been a yeah one hell of a trip so i really hope you guys enjoyed this video if you guys did
make sure you check out my other new zealand video which i'll leave a link up here and if you
guys are new to the channel i would absolutely love you guys would consider subscribing but yeah
anyway until next time guys
