Health Policy & Management

Health policy and management, as we frame it here at Florida International University, has to do with giving students the tools that they need to analyze the complex health care and public health landscape of the United States and the world. Health policy and management is actually a very exciting area to be in right now. As everybody knows, health care is changing. It's a dynamic marketplace and there's a large need for people that have training and understanding health policy, the changes in health policy, and also how to understand and evaluate the effectiveness of programs. All these classes are oriented to help the students to make decisions that are based on evidence, to make decisions or provide information to decision makers. Our program is unique because we are located in Miami, Florida, which is one of the most diverse ethnic and cultural locations in the country. And so students who are looking to work with diverse populations, minority and underserved populations, this provides probably the greatest opportunity and most unique opportunity for those experiences of any place in the country. Something I've really enjoyed is just meeting different professors and the students are from all different walks of life, which really helps contribute to your education because you're really learning about different health disparities, health issues from different socioeconomic statuses, different ethnic groups, different areas of the world, which is really interesting. The health policy and management program is really innovative. They have amazing faculty here and they're always willing to help out. They've taught everything that I can possibly even think of in economics, in evaluation. What we like in our students is that they do want to be the change. They want to be the people that makes the change in policy. They want to be the people that introduces and changes programs in a long-term care facility to make it safer for the clients who are there. They want to be the people that change how health care is delivered so that it's of better quality and patients get better care. A degree in HPM from FIU will put students on the fast track to great success throughout their entire careers.
