Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto, born 1518 in Venice, was a renowned Venetian artist during
the late Renaissance. He stood out as an important figure in the realm of Italian mannerist painting.
His father's profession was a dyer, or tintor in Italian. This is how the artist earned the
nickname Tintoretto, meaning little dyer. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Tintoretto had no
formal training under the great masters of the time. He was largely self-taught, relying on his
natural talent and relentless dedication to his craft. According to early biographers, his only
formal apprenticeship in his young age was in the studio of Titian, which lasted for only a few days.
Allegedly, Titian dismissed him due to dissatisfaction with the apprentice's pride and
envy of his exceptional skill. Despite a strained relationship, Tintoretto continued to hold
admiration for Titian, which is shown as evidenced by the inscription above his studio,
Michelangelo's drawing and Titian's color, paying tribute to the two masters who influenced him.
Tintoretto's greatest achievements lie in his dramatic and innovative approach to painting.
Because of his extraordinary energy in painting, he was described as il furioso,
meaning the furious. His style was marked by bold compositions, dramatic lighting,
and a powerful sense of movement. One of his most famous works, The Last Supper,
is a prime example of his dramatic flair, featuring a dynamic and emotionally charged
portrayal of the iconic biblical scene. The painting Miracle of the Slave from 1548 was
highly successful, leading to Tintoretto receiving numerous commissions as a result.
His works can be found throughout Venice, notably in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco,
where he decorated the interior with an astonishing cycle of paintings.
This body of work showcased his ability to tackle large-scale monumental compositions
with grandeur and imagination. Tintoretto passed away in Venice in 1594, leaving behind a legacy
that continues to inspire art enthusiasts, reminding us of the enduring power of artistic
innovation and the indomitable spirit of an artist driven by his own unique vision.
