As an expert pundit on Monday Night Football last night, Edwin van der Sar heaped high praise on
Sen Lamans for his command of the penalty area, describing his performance against Everton as
remarkably composed. Van der Sar highlighted Lamans' ability to deal with Everton's crosses,
saying he possesses a calming aura that strongly resembles his own style of play in his prime.
In the same vein, interim manager Michael Carrick did not hesitate to label Lamans the hero of the
victory – Carrick stressed that without the young goalkeeper's resilience between the posts,
United's one-goal advantage would not have held – he praised Lamans' steel mentality in coping
with Everton's physical presence inside the penalty box. Interestingly, another United legend,
Wayne Rooney, was also in the stands to witness Lamans' outstanding display, as the presence of
these club icons provided a significant morale boost and positive energy amid Manchester United's
resurgence under Michael Carrick's.
Since the manager's in as well, we've been defending really well together,
actually all season almost. So we knew if me personally and the defence give us a chance,
keep the zero, then we always have a chance to win and that was the case today. Like I said,
it wasn't the prettiest one, but if you work that hard for it, sometimes it's the best one.
Van der Sar's been on the TV tonight, obviously you've played with him for a long time.
I know he's got a long way to go in his career, but in terms of his calmness and that sort of
understated manner, everything just looks unfussy with him. Do you see parallels in
that specific bit of temperament and personality to Edwin? Yeah, I've got to be careful what I say.
I definitely see similarities, yeah. Without comparing them, I don't want to be comparing
them because I don't think it's fair to Senna. But there's definitely similarities. For me,
as a goalkeeper, to be reliable, to be trustworthy and instead of creating a chaos, you want him to
take the chaos away and calm things down. I think Senna is that. He's quite quiet at times and
unassuming, but he's got a real steel in this. To step in, it's a big, big role for some,
and others, it's all about coping and just being comfortable in your environment.
Sometimes it takes time, sometimes not, but how he's gone about it at the moment is
that calmness, that composure, I think it does help those in front of him an awful lot.
