He's worth $202 billion.
He created, owns and runs one of the largest, most successful companies in the world.
But it might make you think, where does Jeff Bezos get the time?
He must not be getting his sleep.
Now you might have heard some people say,
if you want to be successful, you can't sleep as much as regular people.
Well, this is wrong, very wrong.
And in this video, I'm not just going to tell you how much sleep Jeff Bezos gets,
I'm going to tell you why he says sleep is one of the most important things that he does.
My name is Sarah Jeffries.
I'm a registered nurse with the Masters of Nursing
and experience in ER nursing, education and sleep therapy.
Do you want to know how the most successful business executives
make important decisions each day?
Well, it may surprise you to hear how many hours a day of sleep these people actually get.
Now there are historians who've documented for centuries,
the sleep habits of many famous world leaders
and the most influential people of our time.
And many have said that in order to be successful and get ahead, you need to sleep less.
In fact, it's a common theme in some cultures that say,
it shows you're smart if you don't need that much sleep.
But how true is that?
Well, in this video, I share with you one of the most influential people of our time's schedule
and what he spoke about with regards to sleep.
In 2019, Jeff Bezos spoke at the Economic Club of Washington.
He said that his priorities were eight hours of sleep every night.
I get eight hours of sleep, I prioritise it.
How is that possible for somebody who has one of the most busiest
and most important schedules in the whole world?
Well, he said he's very focused on it.
I am very focused on it.
And it's extremely important that he sleeps well.
And the reason for it is simple.
When you sleep more, you make better decisions.
You have more energy and your mood is better.
For me, I need eight hours of sleep.
I think better, I have more energy, my mood is better, all these things.
Now this totally contradicts what some people have said for years and years,
that sleep gets in the way and we need less of it
if we are to be more productive and take over the world.
But in Jeff Bezos' case, the decisions he makes affect so much
and carry so much responsibility that if he sleeps even a little less than normal,
the effect of this could be detrimental to so many important things.
He said that his job, unlike so many others at the senior executive level,
is not to make thousands of decisions every day,
but to make a small number of high-quality decisions each day.
So let's just say, for example, he slept for four hours each day
and he got those four hours of productivity working hours back.
So now he's gone from 12 hours to 16 hours.
So now he's increased his productivity every day to 33% more.
I think that's the math.
Now, is that extra time actually worth it
if the quality of those decisions are less due to feeling tired?
Well, the answer is simple, no.
The quality of those decisions will be much lower
because he'll be tired and grouchy.
And if he makes three good decisions a day, that might not seem that much.
But in reality, those decisions are of such a high calibre
that if he's running on, say, four to six hours of sleep per night,
those decisions are not going to be made to the best of his ability.
The human race cannot get around the psychological
and physiological effects of sleeping less.
There are so many studies to show what happens when we go without sleep.
