It’s no secret that I get a lot of joy from being invited to experience people’s homes. WANT MORE INSPO? 📚 GET THE BOOK: https://bit.ly/3QItBhH ☝️The Ultimate Coffee Table Book! Retreat Homes & Interiors
Being able to meet the home owner and see the space through their eyes is what I love most, there is no better way to get a sense of their personality and what’s important to them. I try my best to convey the essence of every home in our Let Us In Home Tours, however, sometimes you need to hear it straight from the owner. That was definitely the case with the Uber Shed 2. In this video, we introduce you to Joe, the diehard collector that loves history, stories and impulsive purchases. And his wife of 40 years, Liz, who smiles knowingly with each new piece that arrives and sets to work on the decor styling.

⚡ MUSIC ⚡ Andrew Applepie - Let Go David Cutter - Thoughts
I think Liz bought the crow, these little birds, and then I just started getting on eBay and
Gumtree and fossicking, and I mean we put this all together in about a year and a half, two years.
That's amazing.
You know Rick's helped me, you know, he's sort of, not gothic, but what do you call it?
I'm gonna, well it's pretty gothic isn't it?
Yeah I reckon it's gothic, it's an acquired taste.
What's this?
Just the timber.
Yeah.
Yeah we just clad it over the old shed.
What are these, where are these chairs from?
Rex.
They remind me of Game of Thrones.
They're very Game of Thrones.
Very Game of Thrones.
Oh they're very surcey.
Yes they're very surcey.
Oh my gosh.
This video table I've had for about 25 years.
This is very special.
The bed we had original and kept it, didn't we Jo?
That was polyform.
What is this piece as well?
Rex.
Another Rex?
Yeah the Danish furniture was from Rex and this was another piece.
You did tell me, but I'm a shocking person for remembering these things.
Looks like some form of torture.
This was an old French hat.
Oh my gosh.
Rex found that.
I found a taxidermy and he found a gilded mirror and he said I've got an idea.
And that's probably one of my favourite pieces, that it just pops out.
Liz found the wallpaper.
The wallpaper's amazing.
She found the wallpaper and she wanted to do it.
Rex put it up.
I love that this is such a little surprise packet.
You're like oh hello, a nice modern touch.
See Rex found this which is a really one of my favourite pieces.
Just this would have been in some English hunting lodge.
Everything's thought about.
A shelf is thought about.
The barn door is beautiful.
Let's go into the shed.
I live for indoor baths to be honest, but what a special spot.
Yeah copper beaten.
I love how you've done this as well.
Yeah, just put up an old sleeper.
These came from a place in Sydney who specialises in industrial plumbing fittings.
Yeah right.
You know for homes.
Yeah yeah.
So this will age once again.
Yeah exactly.
It's all about the ageing.
That came from the museum.
Oh that's amazing.
A pointy truck for two grand.
I think it cost me three grand to bring it down and then we sort of restored it.
But that came from Geelong, Ampol.
It's just an old oil truck and I'll show you inside the shed.
We actually found underneath the seat its last service and bits and pieces and we had it framed.
When was its last service?
About the 70s I think.
Yeah right.
It works but you wouldn't drive it on the road.
It looks good there.
It looks fantastic.
And I love, you know, you've got yourself a nice prickly pear garden around it now.
I like that.
How beautiful is that?
Because obviously.
It now becomes such a feature doesn't it?
Have you been to Arizona?
Like have you spent much time in America?
I did a little 66.
Oh really?
A couple of years ago on a motorbike.
You picked up a couple of things.
I picked up a couple of things.
So tell us about the Airstream.
Okay so the Airstream.
I met a fellow at Eastern Creek about five years ago.
He owned part of Deus, the motorcycle company.
There was a couple of partners in it and this particular fellow was getting out of the partnership.
So he was selling a lot of stuff.
So we bought the bus really for nothing.
I reckon we would have spent about 150 grand on it.
But you had to do it.
It was just gone.
Everything was gone.
The motor had the original motor but we redid the motor.
Reconditioned it.
You can put it on four stands you know.
So if you pull up a caravan park.
If you pulled up in a caravan park with this.
Like I feel like everyone, the crowds would gather.
You'd be like an ice cream truck.
The times I've driven it through the streets everyone goes crazy.
Oh I can imagine.
And at night.
You'd get so much joy from people.
It's fantastic.
I love it.
And that's what it's all about now.
When you get to my age I love sharing it.
People just let them do.
The kids jump in it.
It's just fantastic.
But we've geared it up.
You know it's got the TV to shower and do a lot of work.
Everything works in there.
But it's just cost so much to do these things up.
Because there's nothing around like them.
And you do it for the love.
I mean we put the canopies up.
The canopy looks great.
Yeah there's one this side.
There's one on the other.
And there's one little back one.
We came across a couple of guys that had pieces.
This guy in Sorrento a couple of years ago.
He was at the back of Sorrento.
And he had a heap of pieces.
And he was selling everything.
And this was one of the pieces.
This is an old architectural.
So we picked up this.
We picked up a lot of log.
A lot of stuff which I'll show you.
It goes so nice.
Look at that.
We got a bit of taxi journey from him.
Here's some of the cars we own.
And what we sort of race.
Look at these Brock.
They're beautiful those posters.
That's sort of my race car.
That's me there.
But it is just a whole race car.
That's phenomenal.
What is that?
That is a mate of mine John Bower.
Who races in Touring Car Masters.
And he raced that car.
Which is a very famous car called Mustang Sally.
And he raced that.
Yeah in Touring Car Masters.
He's got his own.
Is that a drawing or what is that?
It's a sketch.
Gosh that's beautiful.
I'm very excited by all the typography.
Like I just love the signs.
I love.
I can't stop looking at all the different.
Oh the lettering is just amazing.
Actually that sign.
Just picked up that sign from.
You know there's a place in Castlemaine.
A very famous.
Antique and relics and automobile.
Oh right okay.
Massive place in Castlemaine.
I can't think of the name.
That was probably the last place I got.
I remember we went to a market.
And just down at Flinders.
This guy had heaps of tennis rackets.
Oh my god.
I don't know why.
I just liked them.
So I bought them.
And I wanted to put them here somewhere.
And that was only about six months ago.
I don't know why.
But I just got them.
Oh my god.
I just thought I've got to have those rackets.
So this came from that guy in Sorrento.
I know a couple of people.
And that's right.
And I remember at Sorrento.
At Flinders.
There was a guy selling trash and treasure.
Yeah.
I'm the world's worst handyman.
But I bought all his tools.
But these are really old.
You know old planers and squares.
So I just bought them.
You must be in trouble now.
That you can purchase things with your phone.
Because I feel like you would have to like physically.
Um tell me about this guy.
Go up to Moosey.
How good is that moose?
It reminds me of that ad that we see on TV.
You know when they when he talks.
It's insurance.
How bad is that?
So when did you get the moose?
Moose came out of fossil as well.
Again.
Uh probably about two years ago.
This guy?
Cheap.
Came out of eBay.
It works.
Tell you what.
The things you can get on eBay.
It's amazing.
It's uh it works.
Um I can kick it over.
It's in good condition.
Yeah yeah yeah.
So we've driven it around.
A lot of the military stuff that's on it.
And sort of behind you.
Came out of that Cowra War Museum.
Um a lot of ammunition boxes.
Wow.
This came from that guy in Sorrento.
This is an old.
You would have had screws and nuts.
Yeah yeah yeah.
All that hardware stuff.
This was a very famous piece.
This was out of Darling Harbour.
That came out of that museum.
Oh my god.
The Terminator 2.
I like the fact.
I like your um styling.
I like how everything's put together.
That came from a guy who has a pinball machine business in Williamstown.
Grandkids.
I hate karaoke but the grandkids.
There is.
There were railway tickets.
Melbourne railway tickets.
Hang on.
So what.
How did this even like.
Well this came out of the museum as well.
This museum if you like.
I can tell you.
There was a.
It was a three-day auction.
Railway crossing came from the war museum as well.
So anything with an engine.
Anything with like movement.
You're like drawn to.
I like.
I love history.
Steel.
Yeah and steel.
There's probably that combination.
But just you know just different stuff.
Wow that's a beautiful piece.
It's a beautiful piece.
These little minibikes came all the way from Las Vegas.
Really?
At a Mecham auction.
I went to one of those crazy Mecham auctions you see on tv.
Yeah.
I bought some minibikes and some motorbikes.
These minibikes are all fairly rare.
This was a centerpiece at that auction.
This is really really quite rare.
We had to hoist that up with a crane.
That is the symbol run for case tractors in America.
So that is really really rare.
Where was that from?
That would be.
That's their emblem.
So that would have been on a building.
One of their buildings.
Case tractors.
Super heavy.
It's just cast iron.
Yeah.
To get it up there.
So it's their logo.
Their symbol.
That is one of my cars up there.
So that's an AC.
It's a schematic drawing of one of mine.
So when did you start like driving fast cars?
Always.
Since I was 18.
But I never got into racing until probably about 10 years ago.
Yeah right.
Then I got into racing about 10 years ago.
So quite late.
Probably the last 10 years I probably spent most of the kids inheritance.
Car or bike?
If you could only choose one.
What would you do?
Would you go bike or car?
Couldn't split them.
As I said I've got about 40 motorcycles at work.
All these taxidermy.
These came from Perth.
On Gumtree.
Seriously?
I feel like I'm not looking where you're looking on Gumtree.
You go to Gumtree.
Oh I see this stuff all the time.
I'm always looking at it.
Oh is this Reg?
This Reg one.
Yeah.
Mombasa.
Yeah beautiful.
I'll tell you the story about that.
Because I'm in the steel industry there was maybe 99 or 2000.
Blue Scope had this art on steel going around all around Australia.
Everything went to the SES.
A lot of paintings done by Rolf Harris.
David O'Delton.
Mirka Moira.
And what about this Punching Duty?
Yeah Punching Duty look that's a funny piece.
Aussie artist.
Drew Gregory.
And he still paints.
When the kids were at high school.
Yeah.
It was at a high school charity art show.
This is an amazing piece.
This is a big searchlight of a ship.
Oh my god.
That used to be in the Suez Canal.
Another shop that I've used.
A little shop called Used.
And that's in Collingwood.
It's an amazing.
Oh look at that.
Oh my god.
It is amazing.
Do you ever do that at night?
No.
To get people out.
Get it out across the...
Up to the hill on that glass house.
Oh I can't look directly at it.
What's your favorite piece, Liz?
I like everything.
Are you just like oh my gosh here's another piece.
Where's it gonna go?
A lot come in at the last minute and oh I got something else.
Miss if Jo just pops out or something.
He's like oh god what's gonna happen.
We've been married 40 years next year.
Oh wow.
Yeah.
We know each other pretty well.
Have you bought particular pieces in or are you more the decor side of things?
Yeah no.
Probably more than decorating.
It's a full drawer which is really rare.
So you'd have probably haberdashery, ladies, sort of men's and I'd say that'd be probably kitchen.
It came out of New York but we bought that at that War Museum as well.
There was a lot of people after that because it's quite rare.
A little bit restored as much as we could.
But yeah you've just got the different departments and you've got the key.
So it was sort of the first you know you think about computers and things like that.
Oh my gosh that's amazing isn't it?
So sorry where did you purchase this from?
At the Cowra War Museum.
He had a million signs, porcelain signs, a lot of farm implements.
He had a couple of tanks.
It was three days.
Imagine three days.
Ten hour days and millions of people.
And do you think like because Australia, I mean we're so relatively young.
Young yeah.
Comparison to every other.
This guy was a massive collector.
So he's collected over his years and we just offloaded.
That pump came from him as well.
He would have had something like 70 pumps.
Oh my god Bruce Springsteen.
Sorry and now I've just got sidetracked.
Is that signed by Bruce Springsteen?
Yeah.
I think I bought that at one of those crazy auctions you go to.
Oh my gosh.
So this is a nice special space as well.
Yeah this is a great space because you can open it all up.
I love the fact that you've just done this too.
This is Rex Roseburg.
It's from vintage.
History vintage did the floor.
Furniture came from him.
Oh wow.
Oh that's really nice.
You've got to try this chair.
Rex has got amazing pieces.
He's a Dutchman so I think this would.
Oh my gosh.
How good is that?
Most comfortable chair I've ever sat on.
You wouldn't ever get out of it.
Oh and you're the matching colour.
You're the matching colour.
Yes.
Oh this is beautiful.
And all this furniture came out of his.
Very special like driving in here.
It's an interesting drive because there's so much.
There's a lot of energy around this area with the wineries and with the local shops.
But then you kind of get to that pocket where it's a bit more wooded.
And you don't know what to expect.
And you come through here.
So it's a lovely area.
Especially here because.
You're tucked away.
Yeah you are aren't you.
Where'd you get that from?
I'm looking for a good fire pit.
A neighbour.
That was about 1200 bucks.
What makes them?
Yeah just right over here.
Note to self.
And who did the landscaping again?
Colin Hyde designed it.
Because it's very structured and sculptural in itself.
It's really interesting.
And he's framed your pieces like artworks.
And with the trucks.
And with the press.
We did it all in mainly succulents and dry.
Because obviously of our climate.
Would have been here three years.
Last December.
This would only be probably a year old.
And all this bottom would have been about seven months old.
So look it's Jono.
Jono look it's you.
So these guys only arrived on Monday.
So I came up over here with a platform.
And this was all just obviously just landscape.
So you built this specifically for these Gilliam Mark pieces?
Absolutely.
What are we talking about?
They're bronze.
They're about 300 kilos each.
The Gilliam Mark thing.
And I stand to be corrected.
But they've got a couple of either one or two dogs.
And they're Waimaranas.
There to face.
Couple of mini donkeys.
Oh what?
Of course there are.
Are they yours?
Yeah.
So tell me you just picked them up too did you?
I bought them about three years ago.
I've always wanted a donkey.
Hey boys.
That's what they come to.
Hey boys.
What are their names?
Are you ready?
Yeah.
Romeo.
And Giovanni.
I love it.
Oh look you're beautiful.
And these guys live a life of luxury.
Five paddocks.
They rotate.
They're about four years old now.
I just wanted to have a couple of donkeys for the grandkids.
How many grandkids do you have?
I've got two girls.
They must love coming here.
They do.
Yeah.
They are just absolutely gorgeous.
Tell you what, when it's all over they might end up in there.
Well do you know how long they live for?
I don't know.
How long do they live for?
35 to 50 years.
Oh really?
Oh okay.
And they're both geldings.
And you've always got to try to get geldings.
And they're mates for life.
You can't separate them.
Oh that's so sweet.
Do you have any other animals here?
Apart from dogs.
We've always had Dobermans.
But then we got these guys.
We went to a holiday in Italy back when I was 50.
And there was a couple of guys that we stayed with at their farm.
And they had about five of these dogs.
I'd never even heard of them.
So then you're like, guess what?
I want one.
I'm going to buy those dogs.
So they're called Norse Valkyries.
I thought, I want one.
You're giving me all the feels.
I saw a puppy on Facebook today.
And I told Jono to get one.
And he told me I was being too quick.
But I reckon you're one of those impulsive people.
Two seconds it takes me to make up my mind.
Tell us about this piece.
So we're a company that manufactures building products.
And this used to be an old John Heine press
that used to press out brackets for some of our roofing.
We actually bought this little business about 15 years ago.
And he had this press.
And it was still working.
And then we moved it and modernized the business.
And I said, I just cannot throw that press out.
Still using it, though, 15 years ago?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
He modernized it.
There's a little foot pedal here.
You can see how they've attached not much health and safety.
Just the colors.
And it must, um.
It will age beautifully.
It'll age, yeah, really well.
History.
So you don't see these things.
And, you know, you take this to a scrapyard.
What a waste.
What, it's just sacrilege.
I can't wipe the smile off my face.
I'm like a little kid again.
This is just, I just think it's amazing.
Jorie's giving me confidence to buy that puppy.
Just do it.
You only live once.
Remember that Nike ad?
Just do it.
Oh yeah, I do remember that.
I think they're still running it.
Probably my most successful campaign ever.
I've used it many, many times, that ad.
Just do it.
In fact, we had it for a while.
You're blaming Nike for every purchase.
You're like, well, Nike marketing.
I actually started hiding stuff from Liz, but.
