Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live in a tiny off the grid cabin in the middle of nowhere? Yeah, me too. Welcome to the Bruny Island Hideaway, located on Bruny Island in Tasmania, Australia. Designed by Maguire and Devine Architects.
I’ve seen this cabin on Instagram A LOT and that’s why I really wanted to come here and experience it for myself. I’ve gotta say, this is so much more impressive in real life than it is in photos! From the outside it looks really small (I mean it’s a tiny cabin after all) but as soon as you walk in there is so much height, space and light and it feels so much bigger than it actually is.
But that was even before I opened the doors and that lead onto these outdoor deck areas. I love that you have three different spaces to hang out, oh and did I mention that there is an hidden outdoor bath in the deck!
THIS CABIN IS COMPLETELY OFF THE GRID AND RUNNING OFF SOLAR. IT OCCUPIES A REALLY SMALL FOOTPRINT ON A GENEROUS BLOCK OF LAND, HOWEVER AS THE ARCHITECTURE ALLOWS THE CABIN TO OPEN ITSELF UP TO NATURE – THE SURROUNDING BUSH THEN BECOMES PART OF THE HOME AND THAT IS WHAT MAKES THIS CABIN SO SPECIAL.
There’s a fireplace inside, an outdoor fire pit and table for entertaining. It can be as social as you want it to be, but is mostly a private, secluded spot to enjoy your own time. I was surprised by the height in the upstairs loft style bedroom that was very generous, at odd with what I had imagined would be pokey. I also loved the fact that the cabin was just one big piece of furniture – there was only one piece of furniture in the cabin (the low table in the dining/lounge area) whilst everything else was considered in the design and built into the space. Creating an efficient, streamlined and easy to manage interior.
THERE IS SO MUCH SURPRISE AND DELIGHT IN THIS CABIN. EVERY TURN I DISCOVERED SOMETHING NEW; A CLEVER WINDOW DETAIL, HIDDEN STORAGE OR A VERY SLY UNDERCOVER OUTDOOR BATH.
I love that this cabin allows you to close everything down to a concealed but cosy box, which would be fantastic in Winter given the harsh Tassie weather conditions. But come sunshine, you can open up to the elements for a completely different experience.
This little guy has received a lot of praise in terms of design and architectural awards and look, I’m no architect on a judging panel but I’ve got to say this home, it ticks all the boxes for me. I hope you enjoyed this tiny cabin tour!!! Subscribe to our channel for more!

Have you ever wondered what it's like to live in a tiny off the grid cabin in the middle
of nowhere?
Yeah, me too.
This tiny little guy behind me is the Bruny Island Hardaway, let's go take a look.
Shoes off cabin, after you.
Welcome home.
How good does this feel?
I've got to say, this little guy feels and is a lot bigger than I thought it would be.
We've got a kitchen over here, we've got a fridge, plenty of storage, nice little shelving
here for all of our plates, airtight fireplace here, plus, check this out, how incredible
is this?
You can obviously tell that the owner has experienced Japanese homes and this is just
insane.
I love this, this view is just amazing, plus, more storage, more hidden storage, tell you
what, they've been clever with the storage, it's a tiny home, you're going to have to
do that, but, we're going up.
So here is the bedroom loft, I love this, there is so much height here, it's actually
really tall, I can only just touch that, stretching out, it's a really good feel, and then, would
you check out this amazing view that you get from bed, oh my god, imagine waking up here,
a lovely sort of shelf detail here to put your cup of tea, put your books, oh my gosh,
so incredible.
Should we go back downstairs?
Come on, it's time to come down.
I love that there's so much storage in this home, we've got a little spot here for the
firewood, which is cool, and I also love, ready, look up, look at these skylights.
The skylights let a lot of light in, the windows let a lot of light in, but, our doors also
open up, oh my gosh, how good is this?
This completely opens up the cabin.
Doesn't stop there.
Oh my god, I love that.
Oh, that is letting the most beautiful amount of breeze through.
So gorgeous, that's completely doubled the footprint of this cabin, but, we haven't checked
out the bathroom, so come, tucked away here, very gorgeous, modest bathroom, but a very
luxurious feel, look how epic that basin is, I love it, you've got your shower, you've
got your toilet, but, guys.
Talk about being at one with nature.
Alright, I've got one last thing I've got to show you, come on.
There wasn't a bathtub in the bathroom, but.
How about an outdoor bath?
How good is this, but, do you know what?
The view's amazing, but, there's something missing, hang on a minute, yep, that's much better.
Cheers.
I've got to say, I have seen this cabin on Instagram, like a lot, and that is why I really
wanted to come here and experience it for myself, but I've got to say, this is so much
more impressive in real life than it is in photos, because from the outside, it looks
really small, I mean, it's a tiny cabin, but as soon as you walk in, there is so much height,
there is so much space, and there is so much light, and it feels so much bigger than it
actually is, but, that was before I even opened all of the doors, and it leads you out into
these incredible deck areas, I love that you've got three different areas to hang out, three
different decks, and this one, I mean, there's an outdoor bath, there's a bath and a deck,
guys, this is basically me for, like, the next three to four hours.
This cabin is running off the grid, there's solar panels, it has a really small footprint,
and I love the fact that it's on a huge block of land, but it really is only taking up a fraction
of that land, and instead of that, it just sort of opens itself up, so, in fact, like, the bush
and the land becomes your home, and I think that's incredible.
The fireplace, you know, there's a fire pit, there's a table outside, you can go out there
and hang out with all your mates, like, it is just the most social cabin, if you want it to be,
but it's also an incredibly private, secluded spot just to be by yourself and have some alone time.
There is so much surprise and delight in this cabin, I've got to admit.
Literally, at every turn, there's, like, a hidden piece of storage, there's a hidden cupboard,
there's a hidden bath.
I like the fact that you can actually close everything down and kind of conceal it into
a really cozy box, and, I mean, that would be fantastic in winter, because I can only
imagine that the weather here can be quite brutal, but I'm enjoying a bit of spring at
the moment, and I've got to say, this is a very cool spring and summertime pad.
Oh, my God, that bedroom, that loft bedroom, there is so much height up there.
I was a little bit worried.
I was walking up that ladder thinking, oh, my God, this is going to be tiny and pokey,
but there is so much generosity up there.
I love the fact that it's just one big old piece of furniture.
I mean, there's actually only, I think, one piece of furniture in this home, which is
that low table in that dining kind of lounge area, but everything else has actually been
inbuilt.
I mean, it's just one big piece of furniture, and it's all self-contained and just ready
to go.
This little guy has received a lot of praise in terms of design and architectural awards,
and, look, I'm no architect on a judging panel, but I've got to say, this home, it ticks all
the boxes for me.

So now I just need to fill up the bathtub and make the most of it, and that's it.
I love this home.
This is like, you know when you get nervous when you've built something up in your head
about it being really good, and then you meet that person on that thing, and it's not very
good?
This is not that.
This is more than.
This is epic.
So good.
I've sailed the site because that's the site I'm sitting on.
I never run.
I just start.
