Tasmania used to predominantly known for its deep thick forest, natural bushland and walking tracks. Now Tasmania also conjures up thoughts of premium wines, new age whiskey and modern architecture. When you head to Lake St Clair in the state’s centre to visit Pumphouse Point, the best of old and new Tasmania combine to create an experience like no other.
Pumphouse point is stepped in history. In the 1930s, the was a vision to build a 5-storey pumphouse that would house enormous water turbines to power the hydropower system - a vision that was realised in 1940. This state of the art facility was to pump water from Lake St Clair into the nearby St Clair Lagoon where it would be stored and fed to the nearby Tarraleah Power Station as required. However, the need to use the facility failed to arise and the site was eventually decommissioned in the early 90s having never been used for its intended purpose. The Tasmanian Government assumed control of the unique site and appointed the Parks & Wildlife Service as caretaker with a view to attracting potential tourism developers. In a final tender for tourism development in 2004, Simon Currant was successful in securing the lease and began his journey toward bringing Pumphouse Point back to life to create a vibrant and unique home away from home.

Tell you what, nothing like nature to wake you up, yeah.
Okay, it's a good start. Already had a glass of bubbles. Seen someone I know because it's,
you know, Tasmania. And now we're going to go to our room. Let's do it. I'm like really,
really pumped. Pumped for Pump House boys. Really quick sneak peek inside. I'm going
to take you on a tour and experience of the retreat at Pump House Point. Are you ready?
Are we all ready? Oh my god, I love it. Also, how good is this? They've got their own duffel bags.
Very much timber deliciousness. Oh my god, look at that view. It's getting quite cold outside
and the rain's coming down but it is so warm and cozy in here because look, they've got the fire
going. How beautiful is this? You jimmy open this guy. Beautiful. This is like the ultimate glamping
because you've just got the comfiness of being indoors and you've got all that which looks out
over onto the beautiful Pump House. But this furniture is incredible. This is an amazing
dark forest green. These beautiful jardine couches or chairs I should say. They're practically a
couch. Everything is just so beautiful. Awesome Tassie books here. A bit of David Walsh.
Oh, they've got games. Oh my god, you've got dominoes and you've got a bit of
scrabble here as well. There's beautiful lights. This is the mini bar. Sorry, check.
So we've got so much good stuff in here. There are all of these beautiful jams and mustards.
We've got whiskey, gin and then I'm going to eat it all. We've got all these amazing meats,
cheeses. Oh my god, is that honeycomb? Oh my god, that's honeycomb. Oh and there's yummy
Tassie salmon in there as well. Dips and pate and then okay, the booze. Do you know what?
Okay, I'm going to open that. Check out your selection of reds. That is pretty epic. Okay,
beautiful. You've got all of your teas and your coffees in here. This is your party drawer. So
it's got a speaker and firelighter and you've got extra glasses if you have your mates around. Okay,
sorry. This is the living area and then here, if you want it to be private but it's not,
this leads you into the bedroom which you step up into. This is pretty special. It's got an
amazing view outside. You can still look out over pub house. My mind is like exploding right now.
This is a beautiful cabinet in here to hang up all of our lovely clothes.
Look at that skylight. That's incredible. Oh my god, coming down onto these amazing double sinks.
That brass and these circular ceramic things are beautiful. Oh my god, even like the tissue box
is like ridiculously cool. This is here. You've just got a bench so you can just chill out. Okay,
that's for your towels. Amazing indoor bath. That is beautiful. Can you see down here?
Beautiful light well but top and bottom. I love that plus a very sexy toilet as well which has
its own pretty cool view and oh wow. Okay, look at the view through that shower.
So, that's the indoor. Now, come with me.
Oh, we go outside. They give you socks. You get to choose your socks. I love that. You got your
crazy blanket. All right, we're going to explore outside. The sun's coming out. How good is this?
Oh my gosh, are you ready? Is this not the best thing you have ever seen? Your own private outdoor
bath. You are completely in the wild out here. You are just so amongst the bush but it's so
incredibly private. Press for instant hot water. How good is that? This is me and a glass of bubbles
like all afternoon. This is incredible. You can hang up your towel in the tree. Oh my god, I love it.
Can you tell I'm excited? Let's go back inside.
Oh, and there's more wood for the fire. Ready? Charles. All right, getting ready for our walk
which is pretty amazing. Where are we walking? I don't even know. How busy is Duffel though?
So, I've got to pack a picnic I've been told from but we kind of ate a lot yesterday so I'm
hoping there's still some food left in here. Oh, poncho is just in case. How good is that?
Oh my gosh. Does that mean we have to take wine? Yeah, I was just going to say that. Oh my god.
What I love about this place is that it's such an experience, right, and it's so private and
secluded but I like how all the eating the breakfast and dinner is a communal so you get
to meet all the guests. Met the guests last night, didn't you? Yeah, I know. The thing is I make
friends way too easily like communal areas are actually kind of dangerous for me I reckon
because then I just get too excited because I just love talking to people.
Okay, this is like epic. We've got our meats, got our cheese, we've got our mustard. Very important.
I'll just shove that in there. Snacks. Snack because choccy, you know. Do you want wine?
We probably should take some wine. I think I did my dash last night but...
All right. Ready, set, go. Ready, set, go.
Aaron's looking after us. I have this attitude, Lucy, that the day you grow old
it's the day that you stop being surprised by life. It doesn't matter how grey your beard is
or how much hair you've lost or what your joints are doing or how old your birthday cake is.
You stay young when you have eyes that are surprised and the world surprises and delights
me. There's every day I see something that makes me go wow and the vast majority of time it's in
there. Yeah, I'm pretty much like a swordsman. At this time of year there's not a lot that can
sting us but there are a few things out there that can sting us. If you get bitten by a snake
and there's no snakes out here at this time of year we might see a lazy one if we're lucky.
No snakes. Snakes are great. I do like snakes. I reckon you do. And the unfortunate chance that
anyone ever got bitten by a snake, don't run away. Just sit down, we'll make you a cup of tea
and we hit the button on this and in an hour a helicopter come pick you up.
So we can hear that river over there, that's the Hugel River. That's one of the two rivers
that feeds into Lakes and Clare which feeds into the Derwent River which runs to Hobart.
Tell you what, nothing like nature to wake you up, yeah.
Your love is on my whole life's journey
They all search for validation
We all long for the highest place in the world
I close to the day
Every day I get closer
You can't just drink the whiskey, right? You gotta go for the walk.
Have a great rest of your trip
Oh my gosh! Wallaby! He's eating all the berries. He's hungry, you know what, so am I.
All right, let's go. We're gonna go check out Pumphouse Point. All of it. The grand tour. Let's go
This is the dining room. Oh it's so warm and cozy in here. So this is the communal space
where you come and you have your breakfast and you have your dinner and you get to meet and chat
to all of your guests which is really nice because they're a treat especially in all of the rooms
they're so private and a cocoon and here you get to actually socialise and meet people. The other
cool thing is the open bar. It's an honesty system. You just choose whatever you want and then you
find your room number and you write it down. Love it. Lots of tazzy gin, lots of tazzy whiskey. I'm
pretty epic. Red wine storage. I love that. This is such a nice spot to chill out here with a book.
So nice and sunny and warm. I love it. There's heaps more. Let's keep going.
Another little reading area here. Chill out. Got a crazy fire. So how good is this space?
So again honesty system. Hang out. Look at this.
Not a bad way to go. Pretty nice. So nice. All right let's go check out the pump house.
This is the showstopper guys. Are you ready for this view? It's incredible.
The pump house. So this building was actually built in the 1930s. It was meant to pump water,
power a local plant but never actually got used. Recently in like early 2000, Tazzy developer
Simon Currant won the contract. It went out to tender and he basically turned nothing into
something and he's created this amazing place where you can now stay. We're gonna look at this view.
So incredible. These are all the different rooms around here.
I'll trade up my espresso. I might make myself a drink.
I am going to try some poltergeist gin.
Oh that was a healthy pour.
Cheers.
Check out the rest. So we're going up.
Another chill out area. You've got another lounge up here.
It's a bit quieter but again would you look at that view.
How good is it? Okay there's more. Are you ready?
You've got all your games you can play with. You've got pick up sticks. I love it. A bit of
scrabble. All right one more level. We've got some keys. Check out one of these rooms.
Oh my god you go first. This is amazing.
This is next level. You're like sleeping on the water. It's as if you're in a boat
but a very stable boat. It's so beautiful. I love that window seat. That is phenomenal. This
couch is beautiful. Oh my gosh this is epic. Oh my god this is pinking. This is so cool.
Beautiful bed. Imagine waking up here.
Okay okay. Check this out. That is a very healthy mini bar. What do you reckon?
Cheers.
That's a pretty epic one take tour. The wallaby's still there just having the time of his life.
I'm gonna have a bubble bath outside and drink champagne. That's what I'm going to do.
All right we gotta get out of here. We gotta go. I don't know how I feel. I'm like quite sad to
leave this epic glass box. I'm also really tired so I'm hoping I see some fresh air and then we'll
be good. But we're going to go to Bothell. We're going to go to Distillery for lunch. Then we're
going to get to Hobart. That's it. Oh my god look. Ah thank you. All right driving. Let's do this.
What do you mean you don't know where you are? I have absolutely no idea where I am.
So I'm just gonna park here and go find someone. Hope they like Melburnians.
27 minutes out of Hobart. Very excited. I've got to admit I think what I love
most about this home is that my jaw was dropped even before I walked through the front door.
Are you cold? Yes I'm cold. I want to get in the bath so bad. But we're doing contacts.
