Our First Time RV Camping, RV Newbies Learning the Hard Way in BC We tried RV camping for the first time in British Columbia and quickly learned what it’s really like to live in an RV as complete beginners. From setup challenges to campsite life at Mara Lake, this vlog shows our honest experience as RV newbies. We stayed at Mara Lake Campground near Sicamous, explored Salmon Arm and learned a lot in the process. If you're thinking of renting an RV for the first time, this video covers the ups, downs and what we wish we knew beforehand.
Good morning strangers. Good morning. You are joining us in a bit of a random place right now.
We're in a storage facility but we've just picked up our new friend and we are going to take our
first steps into RV life, van life, life on the road. Trial run I guess. Yeah. See if we like it,
see if we survive. So we're not going too far, we're taking this little beauty up to Sycamuse
which is about an hour and a half up the road from Kelowna and we're going to be there the
whole weekend. We're going to do a few hikes and we're just going to enjoy being in nature
and away from everybody else. Yeah. Right now it's nice and sunny. It is. We've got our RV.
I think it's time to hit the road. I think so. Let's go. Come on then. Oh this is big and scary.
I must say I'm very glad that it is Jake driving not me but even so I am never a nervous passenger
with Jake driving but right now I am feeling a little bit anxious but we're heading to Walmart
first and let's see if we make it there alive. We've survived getting to Walmart. Step one done.
How much was all this? This was $80. Nice. Welcome to Canada. Welcome to Canada.
Not that this is the best angle that I could get from this van but we're just,
we're done at Walmart, $80 later. I think we're done. Next step is just heading to the campsite.
Jordan's making a little sandwich. There she is making a sandwich. We're riddled with anxiety
because of this massive thing which is really not that big but for us it is huge. Yeah we're getting
there to the wilderness. Okay I think it's time to leave the Walmart parking lot and head to Sycamore.
I guess we just give it to go. Let's just look. Something's rattling around. Yeah I don't know
Okay let's leave the big city of Vernon DC and make our way out to the sticks. Okay I'm looking
for site number 10. No idea where it could be. Can't even see any numbers. Okay home sweet home,
here we are. We have parked up. We're realizing that we obviously have a very small RV in
comparison to what could fit here. Now it's just time to work out how to plug it in and hook it up
for water because we don't know what we're doing. We've found the power. So right I think uh okay
issue. Doesn't seem like it fits. We'll be right back. It does appear. This is different to the
plug that we plug it into in there. So I guess we work out what that means. It's raining.
Second we got here it started raining. Yeah we've just pulled up, started raining, we can't plug it
in so we don't want to turn the lights on. I'm sure it would be fine but I don't know. Oh I mean
it's terrible lighting but we're just waiting to call our landlord slash roommate slash person who
rented us the van. Just see what he thinks but yeah. Hopefully someone has an adapter that we can
use. I also messaged the campsite. Okay to see if anyone has an adapter. Yeah ah he's calling. We'll
be back. Ask and you shall receive. We have an adapter. We've found out that we have a 30 amp
and this is a 50 amp. Apparently 50 amp is less common so I don't know. But anyway they have this
big chunky adapter thing so we should be good to go. Shall I commentate? He pulls the plug thing out
of the plug hole. He struggles with the plug. He plugs the plug into the plug. Success. And now he
must plug the plug into the plug hole. Wonderful. Go team. Look at that. That is a man in the wilderness.
And now it's time to get those thumbnails to make you click on this video.
That's how it's done. Now that we're somewhat settled in we're going to make our way down
to the lake and go check it out. Yeah and it is late March and we're out here. No jackets. No.
Just our sweaters on. It's actually very comfortable temperature right now. I bloody love
Just casually having to cross the highway just to try and get over here.
What do you say? Sycamore houseboats next? Yeah next weekend? No I think we should do that in
the summer. It's a little bit warmer. Look at the size of some of these houseboats. They're huge.
There's some around the corner that are like three stories. Okay so we're about to attempt
to send the drone up. If you see drone footage after this or if this clip is in the video at all
then we were successful. If not we were not. Off he goes. Be safe. Home sweet home. Here we are.
Back up the hill. Back at whatever this band's called. Yeah we haven't picked a name yet. I mean
it's not ours today. No but it's fun. I'm gonna. It's our little buddy. Okay so now that we're back
we're going to go ahead and attempt to set up our bed for the evening. Yeah let's do it. It's
my end in a few years. This is going to be a challenge because this is difficult when it's
just a normal bed. Oh be careful. Georgia just hit her head. My arse. Georgia's hit her arse. Come on.
This isn't easy. No you're making it look easy. Am I? Nope. Never mind. Okay so I think the hardest
part is done. Got the bottom sheet on. Now pillows. Which way would you like your head to go?
I think this way. Fun fact. This was our first duvet when we moved to Canada. We bought it from
Walmart. Yeah. And it has served us well. Now it's our cabbage duvet. Whilst George is finishing up
inside I'm gonna try and do something with the outside. See how this goes. So I did struggle
with this this lock before so let's see if it plays ball this time. So far so no. He really
wants to go. This is becoming my new favorite game even though it's the same key every time.
I seem to do it wrong. There we go. Nice. Oh. Move the awning thing out the way.
Whoa. That was more aggressive than I expected. Just kick all those stones off. Licked on the mat.
I'm getting pretty hungry. Yeah I think it's time to cook. Let's go see what's about to fall out of
the fridge. Okay so Jake is outside playing with the drone and I'm gonna whip us up some dinner.
I'm thinking jacket potatoes, chili and some sour cream and cheese. First time cooking in an RV so
let's just hope for the best I guess. So I'm gonna give the potatoes a little washaroni.
All I can hear outside is the little drone. This is a lot of potatoes but I'm really not sure how
it's gonna go. We have we have room for error. If they don't cook the way that I want them to
I will just chop them up and I'll think of something else. Oh my god. Can you really,
can you use a microwave in an RV for 17 minutes? That seems excessive. I'm gonna go two and just
see what happens. Okay so we've got the jacket potatoes in the microwave and now I'm gonna get
the pans for the chili. That looks big enough. That's plenty big enough. And of course we have
our Timmy's chili. What are we making? Making chili. Nice. Well Tim made chili.
Tim made chili. He came here and made it himself. The hockey player Tim Horton came here. Is that who it is?
I have to try and squeeze in here whilst Georgia is finishing. This is ridiculous. I should have done
What I tried to just say was that whilst Georgia is finishing off with dinner I'm gonna try and put
these reflectivity things in the windows. I can't remember if it's to keep the heat in or just
whatever but I mean it keeps things a bit more private. Not that this campground is busy so
let's try to put these in. That was the wrong way. I'm gonna say that's good enough. Oh this looks
wonderful. Thank you so much. Well I've been defeated. I did good. You did really good. And now
we're gonna light some candles and maybe get ready to put on a movie or something. Since dinner we're
just kind of tidied up. Put our comfy sweatpants on and things and I just kind of went and tied
things up outside as it started to rain. So I think we're gonna maybe put a movie on. Get some
snacks out. Yeah just chill out. Listen to the rain. Yeah it's quite nice actually. We're in a
movie now. What do you want to watch? Are we watching a movie or are we watching YouTube?
Oh we could watch YouTube for a bit. Jetlag the Game? We could watch Jetlag the Game. Yeah. If
you've not watched Jetlag the Game you need to go watch Jetlag the Game. Oh it's already right
there. Oh look who else is there. We don't know this person. Hello and welcome back to episode
three of our six-day race to claim the most European countries. Right now we're in the
middle of day... Good morning for the first full day here at the campsite. It is a beautiful morning.
I know it was supposed to be pretty crappy all day today and we've woken up to relatively blue skies.
So our first job of the day is unfortunately emptying our grey water tank. Obviously as a
first time RVers this is our first time emptying the tank so we're just gonna hope for the best
and hope not to get mucky yucky sink water all over the place. Yeah at least it's not the other.
Yeah and of course this is Jake's job. We've come to the mutual agreement that
I will do the jobs inside the RV and Jake will do the jobs on the outside of the RV.
That's what we said. Well that's pretty short. Oh I see. Okay so we've got it attached and now to
We're gonna have to move it now. Yeah but reverse this baby. Okay. Okay we're going for round two.
Okay everything's we've moved back to plug back in so. Oh no. Oh are you kidding?
No. Do we have to do this? Yes. Okay round three. We've got it in the hole. Third time's the charm.
That was so close. Definitely time to go wash our hands now though because that was gross.
Lovely. So next up I think we're probably gonna get ourselves ready
go for a bit of a hike. Yeah we're doing the lizard. The lizard hike. I don't know why it's
called the lizard. Maybe you see lizards. Maybe. And hopefully no bears otherwise this is a very
different video. In memoriam. It's time to head out on a hike. Yes it is. I don't know the weather's kind of
on and off. It's nice right now but. Those are some nasty clouds over there and I'm
just hoping it doesn't rain because I forgot my jacket in the RV and made the decision not to.
It's only there so you know this is on you. I will say it smells very nice in this forest.
Smells like a yankee candle. We were just taking some photos of Georgia and she sat on a tree.
Well maybe we won't show it. So sticky. She's got sap all over her butt. Smells. Smells amazing. Divine.
She has a good smelling ass. Might need to go back and get changed now. We are over halfway now so
yeah and this part does seem easier. So sticky. We've somehow made a wrong turn and we're in a quarry
so I think we have to kind of head back up the way we came. We were looking at the hiking map
and it, I don't know, we were following it and then just somehow we've ended up not being on
the trail anymore and we don't know where it turned off. All trails said this was a
moderate hike. Yeah. And an easy 45 minute loop. And we're lost. We're lost. And we're knackered.
I'm knackered. So we made it back up the hill. We found where we were supposed to turn off to rejoin
the trail. I don't know how we missed it. Tiny little sign here. So we came from up there and
just went. We did it. We made it. We did it. Good job everyone. About a mile and a half. I'm so sweaty. So sweaty.
So just up the road there is where we did the hike and right here just a mere few moments down
the road is our campsite. So if you're looking for a great spot to stay and second rest, this one.
You know when we came camping, RVing, I thought this would be such a nice relaxing time. We don't
have to worry about anything. We're away from other people. We just get to enjoy nature and I forgot
I have to look after Jake. You don't have to look after the outside. I have to make sure he's
entertained at all times. I saw a ladder and I took my opportunity. I have to make sure he's safe and right now.
Yeah I'm not I guess. We've decided to get a bit of a change of scenery for some late afternoon,
early evening gins. Drinky poos. So we've come up to the roof because there was a ladder and we
weren't told we couldn't. Anyway here's the drone that tried to kill itself. Do with that what you
will. Yeah I don't know if the record it recorded but it uh it freaked out midair and tried to fly
itself into the lake and the highway. Oh okay it's gotten cold outside now so I think it's time
to get ourselves ready for some dinner. I think so. So we're gonna update our adventure book
for a little bit. We've got some photos that are printed and ready to be stuck in. We haven't done
this in a hot minute so we're very far behind. I think we're still in 2022. So we've got a ways to go
but I mean I really love this book. Jesus Christ. That was scary.
Georgia is now watching back our latest video that we posted this weekend.
We're gonna do our normal reviews of the video but in front of a fire this time.
We have woken up on the last morning of our camping experience. It is foggy and cold and
grey but it actually looks pretty cool. Very twilight-esque. Very hoa hoa. So we're just
gonna get packed up. Kind of get the van ready to go. We're gonna have some pancakes. Nice. Maybe have a
quick drive through Sycamuse and then we're gonna maybe try and go to Salmon Arm. Let's go make some
pancakes. It's time to start packing things up. And while Jake has been fixing the outside I have
done the dishes and tidied up the kitchen a little bit. It's almost time to go. 10 minutes to check out.
And with that we have left the Marra Lake campground behind. We had an absolutely amazing
stay just in time. The sun's coming out. The clouds are lifting. It's going to be an absolutely
beautiful day. So before we head into Salmon Arm we remembered that our favourite place to get
some choccy milk was just down the road from our campsite. So we are here outside of Dutchman Dairy
and we're gonna go get some choccy milk and maybe even some ice cream.
Yeah true. Let's go. Let's do it. I love RV life. So the question is what size do we want?
Extra large? I would go with extra large. How about the nice glass glass? Yeah. Let's do that. Sounds good.
Those are some lovely jugs you've got there. Thank you. First and last time we stopped here was on our
way back from Revelstoke from our trip for your birthday last year. Yeah it was my birthday. Yeah so if you're
interested in more of the Okanagan, Shuswap, this whole region of the world check out the Revelstoke video.
Yeah it's a really good video actually.
Delicious. Doesn't fit.
Okay welcome to Salmon Arm. We're just leaving the RV behind for a bit. We found a parking
lot down by the water. It's free on Sundays which is even better. And they have designated RV
and trailer spots. Yeah so tick tick tick. Everything worked out. Thank you Salmon Arm. Good job Salmon Arm.
Sorry we know the zoom isn't great on this but there is potentially a bald eagle right there.
That's pretty cool. So this is the main street in Salmon Arm and we are discovering that nothing
seems to be open on a Sunday. So we're going to try and go to the second highest rated coffee shop
in town. Let's see how it goes. Lunch looks good. Yeah. Looks very tasty. I'm excited about this. And the
maple lattes. I haven't actually tried mine yet. Oh try yours on camera then. I really enjoyed mine.
That's really good. That's so nice. We liked it so much I got another coffee
and Georgia's got a little ice cream.
I think we've seen what we have to see of Salmon Arm so far. Yeah. We know to come back
not on a Sunday next time. So things are actually open. There's definitely more to see. I know that
they have like a public market and things but I think I'm pretty satisfied with what I've seen
today. I'm satisfied with Salmon Arm. We had a really nice time. Yeah it's so peaceful. Very nice. Yeah I mean I'm sure it's
busy in summer and stuff but it's been great today and it's getting warm as well which is so nice.
Like we first got out of the RV we've both had our jackets on and we thought about going back
It's probably time to head back to the RV. Yeah. But we're going to take the scenic route to get
back to Lake Country. Yes we are. Okay back at the storage lot ready to return it. All we have to do
now is unpack this guy and put it all straight into our car and then. Okay that's us done. We're
and we already can't wait to do it again whether it's with this guy or like a normal van like a
sprinter or a transit van. I don't think we can go bigger than this right now though. This is
big enough. I hope you enjoyed it. Let us know if you want to see any more of these sort of videos.
I think that's the end of the video. Thank you so much for watching. We hope you enjoyed it.
Please consider liking and subscribing so we can do more of these sort of things in the future.
Next we are going to San Francisco. Yeah. We are getting the train from Seattle all the way down
the coast and then we've got a few days in San Francisco to go to the Walt Disney Family Museum.
We're going to try and go to Alcatraz. Yeah. And just see the sights of San Francisco. Yeah
exactly. So like I say please consider liking and subscribing. We hope to see you in the next video.
We'll see you later. All right home time. Bye Bill. Bye Bill. Ready in two one. Let's take some
thumbnails. Whoa. Tripped on a rock. My house doesn't have a slide. I feel like we could play
a game of spot the drone. The little guy's just so tiny. But there he is. Our little DJI Neo.
I don't know which way around this is supposed to go. It's probably not that way. Oh ads.
With BRB. Campsite day. I don't know. I'll probably do this again. Jesus Christ. That was scary.
Oops. Okay well it's on. Your job is outside.
Pancakes. Go get. Go get. Get it Georgia. Well the cup of pancake powder was managed with
minimal mess I would say.
