get tons of questions about where to shoot a turkey with a bow and if you look through the
internet there's some great videos out there there's some great animations there's all kinds
of things showing the anatomy of turkeys but to be honest with you a lot of them vary and as a
bow hunter i've been shooting turkeys with my bow for about 25 to 30 years i'm not for sure but the
one thing that i'll tell you the golden rule that always is successful for me is you can usually see
the legs all the time you can see the legs on the birds even if they're strutting you'll be able to
see those legs and so i use the legs as my tell because here's the thing if you think about a
chicken and when you clean a chicken or when you clean a turkey where are you cleaning it from
you're cleaning it from the back and there's a cavity between the legs and then you have a
tremendous amount of breast tissue all this is breast and a lot of people make the mistake of
going for the center mass of the bird and you're just punching through muscle you're punching
through breast meat so i can tell you with a bow a turkey flying off is a nightmare turkey running
off with a nightmare but the one thing the common denominator for either of those two things to
happen is they have to have the wheels if the legs are working they can run if the legs are working
they can get enough momentum to pitch and then fly so my rule is i follow the legs up and i
envision where that drumstick is connecting in because there's a lot of mass there a lot of
opportunity for a big broadhead to create shock but if you take out these legs and they can't
spring then they're not going to take flight and the vitals are all right back there you're a little
high you have a great opportunity at spine pelvis so in this case for this bird right here
robbie made an unbelievable shot right there i told him to follow the drumstick up right there
is his entrance and this bird instantly that leg was gone and he had to just go down he had no option
to fly no option to run so keep that in mind where that drumstick connects the top of the drumstick
always visualize that and whether he's going away where those drumsticks come in it's going to be
above that fan not through the fan you would shoot under him but it's going to be right there you can
hear that pelvis and then if he's head on you're going to be right under the beard through the
gizzard between the two breasts same thing you're going to go right through those vitals and have a
great opportunity for spine if he's in a full strut position like this texas hard shot again right
between where those two drumsticks are coming together that is the texas triangle the golden
triangle on a bird and put an arrow there it's over real quick
