There is only one animal in the world which can hope to survive a fight with a grizzly bear.
Another grizzly.
This is not a life or death struggle. Bears do not try to kill one another.
But it is not less serious because of that.
It is a battle over a female and it's fought according to ritualized rules which all grizzlies understand.
When one gets the upper hand, the other surrenders.
The stronger wins the female and perpetuates his superior strength through breeding.
There is constant competition for good fishing spots. It's something worth fighting, Jinter.
Maybe he's just puzzled by all this frantic activity.
But he doesn't stay puzzled for long.
Almost always, the biggest bear claims the best fishing holes.
But frequently, the question is, who is the biggest bear?
The fight sets off another.
The rule of survival is not to fool with Mother Nature.
The second is definitely not to fool with a mother bear.
In the confusion of the fight, the salmon slipped back into the river.
But all the mother bear knows is that it's gone.
And she thinks the stranger took it.
Large males meet and compete for one female.
The result is bound to be nothing less than spectacular.
These battles can end in death.
And for territorial reasons, large males may sometimes kill small cubs.
The female, which is much smaller than the males,
watches from a safe distance as the winner assumes a dominance posture over the loser.
And the need to protect Tuffy from danger.
Where the big males are fighting over the fish, she will keep well away.
Tuffy watches the violence from close beside her mother.
Sterling, the giant, is once more robbed by Woofie.
Scraps are breaking out all over the river.
It's not all about food.
There are important matters of status to be decided.
The fights over salmon serve to maintain the order of dominance among the big males.
All this conflict may cause life-threatening injuries or crippling wounds.
Most of the males bear old scars.
That's why many of them are easier to recognize than females.
