In 1988 Kyosho created one of the most controversial RC cars of that time period.
This was a two-wheel drive vehicle but the motor and stuff was up front allowing this vehicle to
have front-wheel drive. Today's video we're going to look at a couple of different models that try
to replicate it and find out why the Kyosho Maximum was the most controversial and most
banned RC car on the track. All right everyone welcome back to the channel so tonight's video
we're going to talk about two-wheel drive vehicles from the 1980s so we're going back to 1988. There
were a lot of models out back then of course those two Tamiya cars you saw and then the RC-10 that
came out like in 1984-85 and it was very popular and revolutionized the RC industry as far as
two-wheel drive and even vehicles just are concerned. Then we had stuff like the Nikko
Rhino which you're seeing here and then the Golden Arrow 2 and I'll get into that in a completely
different video but we're going to talk tonight about Kyosho. Kyosho really hit the scenes hard
when they won the two-wheel drive 1987 if more world championship with their Kyosho Ultimate
Buggy which you see here which later led a couple years later of this vehicle. This was a two-wheel
drive front-wheel drive buggy and it was called the Kyosho Maximum. Now this was very controversial
because no one had ever done anything like this and no one was thinking outside the box and this
gave two-wheel drive vehicles a very very good competitive edge because the motor and stuff was
located up front on the vehicle. Now the body design was kind of like the Kyosho Turbo Optima
which you see there it resembles in a lot of ways for but they did change it up just a little bit.
Now this vehicle did come in kit form a lot of things from the 80s came in a kit form like this
right here and something that you had to put together with it and I'm hoping that Kyosho will
probably re-release this but we'll see. But anyway you had to put this thing together completely
and yes what you guys are seeing there in the upper top part of the screen is a mechanical
speed controller. So these vehicles that you had to put together these kits did come with a two
channel radio where you had a servo for the steering and then one to operate this mechanical
speed controller. Now with this vehicle like I said it gave it an advantage over the vehicles
that were out there in the two-wheel drive circuit because it had the speed of a two-wheel drive but
it performed almost like a four-wheel drive buggy with the motor and stuff being up front. Like I
said this is a mechanical speed controller for those of you guys that don't know about this
that's the way it was constructed look like inside the vehicle but this was very controversial guys
it really was you guys just don't know how much when people started taking this out to the track
and racing it how much of an unfair advantage it gave people. Even in this kit form here if a racer
went in and modified it they were able to go on a track and be competitive pretty much at a local
level and I don't know how it went on the national circuit but there were people out there creating
cars like what you see right here where they put the motor and stuff up front and it was giving them
an advantage beyond that of a normal two-wheel drive vehicle. A lot of companies were going out
and they started creating this and why it was banned I don't know because it would have been
good to keep something like this going because who knows where RC cars would be today if we had
companies doing this. Now this is a Yokomo design that was done I think it was around 1990 or
something like that took about a year and a half for people to start banning this but this also had
four-wheel steering too with it and you guys noticed some of the Novak speed controls and
stuff in there but with this people also were going in and they were creating their own vehicles
where they weren't making it as you guys see here this is from a reddit post they weren't
just making an off-road vehicle some people just made an on-road vehicle and wanted an on-road
front-wheel drive vehicle so in my opinion Kyosho should re-release this vehicle I think it would be
good especially in today's times where we're looking for some new stuff out there and it'd
be cool if they did this as an 8th scale vehicle which I doubt they will but they can recreate this
in their Ultima version or 10th scale version and put this out here and I would love to see
Kyosho do this like I said this is something completely different so if you guys like videos
like this I'm not going to go too in-depth on that let me know because I got tons of videos I
used to do I used to do something called throwback Thursday where I'd go back and talk about finish
cars so if you guys want me to start doing that back again just put throwback in the comments or
more more and I'll go back to some more history of RC cars so anyway don't forget to like subscribe
put your comments down below and stay tuned for the next video appreciate you watching
