Would you believe that some peaches you eat today were first prepared for harvest three years ago?
Sounds unreal right? But it's true, I made this video because a peach isn't just a summer fruit.
It's the product of years of work from soil to sunshine bees to people all coming together at
right moment. I want you to see that journey. In California, farmers grow up to 140 peach trees
per acre, but when spring comes they remove nearly half of the blossoms just so the remaining fruit
can grow bigger and sweeter, then during harvest thousands of workers pick the peaches by hand.
Because these fruits brew so easily machines can't touch them within just a few hours.
They're sent to sorting centers washed scanned by eye cameras and graded by color size and
brightness, the best ones go to grocery shelves. Others become jam juice or canned fruit if you're
still watching right now drop me a simple dot in the comments just so I know I am not telling this
story alone and this this is only the beginning. In the next video we'll head to California's dry
orchards to explore how 90% of America's plums are grown and why this fruit might be the most
underrated in your kitchen stick around it's worth it have you ever taken a bite of a sweet
juicy peach and wondered where it came from picked it why it tastes so perfect today
we're stepping into the very heart of America's peach orchards where every season tells a
story and every harvest is a race against time weather and nature itself in the fertile valleys
of California's central valley peach season begins long before the first fruit ripens
late winter is a time of quiet preparation the trees still bear from the cold months are
carefully pruned by hand each branch is shaped not just for beauty but for balance letting in just
enough light air and energy for the growing season ahead can you believe that a single acre might
hold up 142 peach trees that's thousands of blossoms in the spring each one with the potential
become a fruit but not all will make it around 40 are trimmed away when flowering begins
why because fewer blossoms mean bigger sweeter peaches as the orchard awakens
thousands of honeybees arrive beekeepers rent hives to farmers for $150 to $200 each bringing
pollinators that ensure every bloom has a chance to become fruit and this isn't just biology
it's business no bees no peaches behind every perfect peach is a workforce often overlooked
every spring thousands of migrant workers from Mexico and Guatemala arrive to prune fin
and later harvest the fruit in 2025 California alone employed more than 2 000 seasonal workers
in peach farms earning between 13 and 16 per hour their hands shape the harvest after three
months of patient care irrigation pest control soil testing and weather watching the peaches
finally reach maturity want to know how farmers know they're ready they don't rely on color alone
they gently twist the fruit and feel the give too firm weight a few days just right into the
basket it goes by hand peach skin bruises easily that's why machines aren't used
human touch is the only way to preserve their quality each fruit is gently placed in padded
bins and rushed to the plant ideally within hours and what happens next might surprise you
these facilities aren't just warehouses their hubs of innovation peaches are washed sanitized and
lined up along conveyor belts moving at nearly 5 000 peaches per hour high-speed cameras scan
each one for color size ripeness and defects the best peaches continue down the line to be packaged
fresh others are freezing did you know that a single packing facility can handle up to 50 000
pounds of peaches in one day that's enough to feed a small city and what about taste Georgia might
produce as much volume as California but it's peaches are celebrated nationwide for their flavor
why hot days and cooler nights that temperature swing builds sugar in the fruit as a result
Georgia peaches remain a favorite among Americans even if California dominates in production
in 2025 the U.S harvested approximately 630 000 tons of peaches up three five percent from 2024
thanks to favorable weather and extended sun hours but not everything was smooth delays in
the labor visa system meant some farms couldn't hire pickers on time and increased fuel costs
pushed up transportation prices reducing margins for smaller growers still the cycle continues
after 13 to 15 years most peach trees are removed and replaced with new ones
it's the rhythm of agriculture one generation giving way to the next
so next time you see a ripe peach in your grocery store remember it's more than fruit
it's sun soil sweat and science which states peaches do you prefer have you ever visited
an orchard in full bloom drop your thoughts in the comments and don't forget to subscribe for
if you thought this journey was fascinating stay tuned because next we're heading to the
sun-drenched hills of California for a behind-the-scenes look at the world of plums
