Cubs spring training is presented by Bet365.
More baseball, more fun.
Marathon of baseball this weekend continues in Mesa.
Cactus League fans excited for some sunshine in baseball.
A bullpen Sunday at Sloan Park.
Time for the Giants lineup, and it's brought to you by Ford,
for the San Francisco Giants, Brennan Rodriguez,
and Eldridge 1-2-3, Matos Susak-Schmidt,
4-5-6, and Cardassian Harbor Fitzgerald, 7-8-9.
And that's hit in the air.
Shallow right center to play for the catch made.
Dylan Carlson one away here in the first.
That's skied.
Right center and playable.
Two outs.
Bringing him to the big leagues.
That's a called third strike.
Good old Uncle Charlie and a scoreless inning
from Caleb Theobar, 1-2-3.
We'll go to the bottom of the first.
It's time for the Cubs lineup, brought to you by Bet365.
Bush Horner, hat, 1-2-3.
Swanson, Conforto, Ballesteros, 4-5-6.
Shaw, Carlson, Kingery, 7-8-9.
Likes to sink the fastball.
Has a good breaking pitch as well.
Bush to center.
Brennan back at the warning track.
He slides and he makes the catch.
Michael Bush gave it a ride, but will Brennan slow to get up?
Nice play for the first out of the bottom of the first.
Yeah, we talked in the top of the first about how difficult it can be
to play the outfield here in Arizona.
This is just a spectacular play by Brennan in center field.
He knows he's running out of time, but maintains concentration,
hauls it in before going to the ground and banging into the wall.
One game over 500.
Nikko to left.
Falls in for a base hit and could be two.
Nikko to second, and it's an easy stand-up double for Nikko
and a one-out two-bagger here for the Cubs.
Payoff.
Good take.
And a two-out walk for Dansby Swanson.
Conforto grounds it up the middle, and it's in the right center for a base hit.
Nikko scores.
Nice RBI single Michael Conforto,
and the Cubs take the lead here at the bottom of the first.
We talked about that good run on his fastball.
You see it moving out away from Conforto.
Again, it's up a little bit,
and just able to nudge it through the middle of the diamond for the RBI single.
Lifts that to right.
Matt Shaw, run towards the line.
Foul ground, makes the catch.
Nice test for Matt that he passes.
Missed strike three.
Maton strikes out Schmidt.
So now two outs.
Nice pitch by Phil Maton.
Yeah, when opposing hitters talk about Maton, they talk about that breaking stuff.
0-1.
To center.
Carlson back over the shoulder, makes the catch.
All trade.
Chopper to third.
Nice play, nice throw, nice first out.
Scott Kingrey, 5-3 put out.
Top three, 1-0 Cubs lead.
There's a swing and a miss.
Strike three, Hobie Milner.
Strikes out Tyler Fitzgerald.
I think Fitzgerald thought it was two strikes, but it's strike out number one.
Now home plate umpires indicating strike two.
Paiseros is like, wait a minute here.
Did I get fooled too?
Nope, two balls, two strikes.
Now strike three.
Wicks, Luke Little.
Towards second.
He'd go.
Easy.
1-2-3, top of the third, 1-0 Cubs lead.
Have him explain his process.
Picked him off.
Luke Little with 97 with some movement over to first to pick him off.
It's always a point of emphasis in spring training to work on pick offs
and a very good move here by the big fellow.
Might be spending some time with Matthew Boyd on the backfield.
I got no idea.
Zero chance.
That was nasty from Luke Little.
So the pick off followed by the punch out.
Luke Little off to a good start here.
Wall advice.
Hard to left.
Catch made by Happ.
And Luke Little faces the minimum in the fourth.
1-0 Cubs.
It's to the Giants in exchange for Tyler Rodgers.
Dansby pulls it down the left field line, and that's a base hit.
One hopped the wall.
Dansby trots to second, heads to third.
Sprinting, head first slide.
He's safe.
Big spring continues for Dansby Swanson.
It's a leadoff triple here in the fourth.
Ballesteros to second.
Score on.
Throw to first is in time.
Mobile with an RBI.
Doubles up the Cubs lead.
The 2-0 advantage.
So as you can see there, the energy is going more towards the target,
whereas before.
Andrew Susak one hops the wall.
Leadoff double against Corbin Martin.
2-2.
Chopper.
Nico plays it on the top.
Hop off the back foot, and he gets him.
That is a difficult play made look way too easy by the gold-glover Nico.
Yeah, second real nice play he's made in this game.
One of the best defensive teams in baseball last year figured to be again,
so this year just a great read there as he charges and then retreats
to get a little friendlier hop.
He knows he's got a guy going down the line that does not run particularly well.
In the air, right center field.
Carlson races back at the track, and it is gone.
Parks Harbor ties it up.
Two-run home run here in the fifth.
It's a 2-2 game.
Giants did not have a hit through the first four innings of this game,
but double home run here in the fifth and put a two-spun on the board.
Just a little bit of a hanger.
You cannot make that mistake to Brooks Harbor.
Absolutely.
Tomahawks at the left.
Michael Bush with a single.
Two is the psychological, the emotional component of the hitter.
Dansby to the left, another base hit.
Dansby's second hit of the day.
Bush scores, and Dansby Swanson, another extra base hit.
Gives the Cubs a lead.
It's a 3-2 game at the bottom of the fifth.
Walk, triple, double now for Dansby.
Again, he gets a hanging breaking ball and just rips it to the left.
Ballesteros over the head of the first baseman Eldridge.
It's in the right field.
Moe hits for Moe Baller.
Two-run single.
The Cubs add to their lead in the fifth.
They've scored three runs.
They're up 5-2.
Such a smooth swing.
That's hit in the air, left center field.
Pretty well struck.
It's back, and it's on to the berm and gone.
It's a little shot here for the Giants.
And the Cubs, three-run lead has turned into a two-run lead.
It's a 5-3 game.
First batter he sees delivers a long ball.
I mean, when you see that off the bat, you think that's a fly ball.
Watch Ballesteros' point.
You know, the ball really carries in the desert.
There's another one.
Back-to-back home runs for the Giants.
First one, Grant McCray, and this one, Jesus Rodriguez,
Giants' 18th-ranked prospect.
Solo shot, and the lead is cut to one.
It's a 5-4 game.
Yeah, the first one looked like maybe it would be a high fly ball
and stay in the ballpark.
This one off the bat, you knew it was leaving the yard.
So did he.
So did everybody.
That ball was crunched.
Whether it's now or September, and that is smoked.
Left field and deep,
and it's another home run for the Giants.
It finds its way into the bullpen.
Yeah, you really feel for Connor Schultz here,
getting a chance in this big league game,
but it is not going well for him.
Three long balls plus a solid single.
It's a solo homer, solo homer, two-run homer,
and you see it just a little lob wedge into the bullpen.
Luis Valbuena.
Lashes it to left, sinking line drive,
and it's caught with an addition of a tumble.
And Carnacione, a big man out there in left,
not the smoothest plays, but he gets the job done.
To make me feel old, talk about Cubs players
who played in the Little League World Series in 2015.
In 2015, totally agree.
Yes.
Hit the center, it's another home run.
Another long ball for the Giants, solo shot,
and they double up their lead in the 8th.
They were up 6-5.
It's now 7-5.
Started quietly.
The Giants did not have a hit
through the first four innings of this game,
but the kids that have come off the bench
have done most of the damage,
but the corner guys, not so much.
And out to right field, slicing towards the corner,
and that's a fair ball and a one-hop off the wall.
Looks like this will be a triple,
one that scores another run.
It's 8-5, Giants.
Well, the Giants were at 12-2
coming into play here this afternoon.
What does that mean?
Absolutely nothing.
Armis is likely the guy.
Slice to center.
It's outside the outstretched arms of Rojas,
and it's 9-5, Giants.
Hit the short, throw to second.
There's one over the first.
Bounce, scoop.
That's the ballgame.
Game ending, 6-4, three-double play,
and the Giants continue their Cactus League dominance.
A 9-5 win, and they're now 13-2.
