Alright guys, how's it going? Welcome back.
I recently bought a Nissan 100NX, which is a forgotten little sports car from the early 90s.
The video went down really well and it made me think,
are there any other modern classics out there that are worth buying?
So today I've chosen 10 cars that I believe would not only be fun to own,
but also be a good investment.
Right, let's get started.
The first one on the list then, this might surprise you,
it's from Peugeot.
It's the Peugeot 406 Coupé.
Now the 406 Coupé is a beautiful looking car, it was designed by Pininfarina,
and they've been around since 1996.
Now if you have a look on Autotrader, there are only currently four for sale.
Let's take a look at this one for example.
It does look, at quick glance, a bit Ferrari-ish.
That's all thanks to Pininfarina.
It's a beautiful looking Coupé that.
I mean look at those rear pillars.
It is genuinely a stylish thing.
You get nice plush leather seats, there's room for four people.
And to top it all off, they're cheap to buy and cheap to maintain.
So that one's a 2001-51, it's a two litre petrol SE Coupé.
It's manual, it's in Ferrari red, and it's only £2,995.
That's an awful lot.
You'll hear this phrase a lot today.
It is an awful lot of car for the money.
Ah, we've got a blue on it.
Oh, this is dangerous.
This is tempting.
This one's only in Stalybridge, which is six miles from me.
That's quite a nice colour blue as well.
I don't like the boot spoiler.
In fact, I detest the boot spoiler.
A little bit of rust there.
But yeah, such a pretty car that.
The fact that you can pick them up for about £3,000
just makes it a very good proposition.
They're available with a two litre petrol, or a three litre V6 petrol, or a 2.2 litre diesel.
Now, if you can find one, it is slim pickings really,
because there are very few of them out there.
But if you can find a three litre V6, that's what I'd go for.
I think the three litre V6 will prove to be the better investment.
Next on the list, then we're moving from France and we're heading to Bavaria.
It's the BMW 7 Series.
Specifically, the BMW E38.
The E38 was the BMW 7 Series, which ran from 1994 until 2001.
And they're a beautiful car.
I've admired them for a very long time now, but they've aged beautifully.
They've got really simple, elegant lines.
So let's just set our maximum age here to 2001.
And there are 21 available.
And what's interesting is that you can still pick them up relatively cheaply.
What I'd recommend is don't go for a modified one like that with black grilles and everything.
What you really want, in terms of low running costs, is the 2.8.
So the 728i really is the one to go for.
The four litre V8s can have issues with the timing chains and things like that.
Prices are starting to creep, but you can still pick them up quite cheaply.
Look at this one.
So this one's £2,750.
Cars just aren't built like that anymore.
I can smell that leather from here.
The 2.8 litres are straight six.
It isn't particularly quick.
It produces less than 200 horsepower.
But it's enough.
I think you'll find it adequate.
Again, I think it's just a car that will rise in value in the next few years.
You can pick up decent ones for £5,000 or less.
And I swear, if you keep it in good condition, it will prove to be a good investment.
I think the good thing about the 7 Series is that it's very practical.
So you get seating for five people.
You get decent-sized boots.
It's a nice, comfortable, spacious car.
Perfect for a long road trip.
And it just looks classy and elegant and cool.
But if you want low bills, maybe avoid the V8s or the V12.
Try and stick with the six-cylinder.
They really are a good engine.
Next on the list, then, we're staying in Germany and we're heading over to Audi.
It is the Audi 80 Convertible.
Now, you hardly see these anymore.
They're a bonafide classic.
But you can still pick them up for around £3,000.
I just couldn't believe it.
We're going to head over to eBay for this,
because they're currently non-for-sale on Austrader.
So, Audi 80 Convertible.
Take a look at this one, for example.
It's a late 1999, and it's only £18.99.
It's a classy-looking thing, that.
And you just don't see them anymore.
The Audi 80, of course, was replaced with the A4.
Interestingly, Princess Diana had one of those in the 90s.
There aren't that many of them, to be honest, on eBay.
But take a look at this one.
This one's a bit more expensive.
This one's £5,495.
It's a 2.6-litre automatic,
and it's a final edition model with a new power hood.
I think that's an effortlessly cool car.
It's very elegant.
And the old 2.6-litre V6 is quite a reliable engine.
You know, with interest rates dropping recently,
that is a better place to put your money.
It's a good job, you know, I haven't got a big barn somewhere,
because it would just be filled with cars.
There are currently only 809 of them left on the UK roads,
currently taxed and MOT-ed.
So they're very rare.
Before we get on to the fourth,
I need to say a big thank you to today's video sponsor.
Today's video is sponsored by Surfshark.
Now, if you haven't heard of Surfshark before,
they're a VPN service provider,
so they help to keep you safe while you're online.
Whether that's online banking or online shopping,
they hide your IP address so cyber thieves can't view it.
In addition to that, it blocks malware, phishing, ads,
and other kinds of nastiness,
which in turn can spit at your bandwidth
and make your device run much more smoothly.
The last thing I want to do is have my credit card details stolen
or have my bank account hacked into.
And since I've been using Surfshark,
touch wood, that just hasn't happened.
Another good thing about Surfshark
is you can change your location settings
so you can watch your favourite content
from online streaming services like Netflix,
even if it isn't available in your area.
You know, sometimes you want to watch a show or film
and it says it isn't available.
Well, with Surfshark, you can change your location settings
so that it thinks you're in a different territory.
Then all of a sudden, it becomes available.
Very clever.
You can download it very easily from the app store
and you can use it on multiple devices.
It's cheap and easy to use.
We're all online a huge amount of time these days
and you just don't know how much information
you're putting out there.
So it's better to be protected rather than not.
Especially if, like me,
you frequently use public Wi-Fi at train stations,
airports, fast food restaurants, that sort of thing.
If you're interested in checking out Surfshark
and you want to get an even better deal,
then don't forget to use my promo code HYPECORTOS,
all one word,
and you'll get three months extra totally free.
Or alternatively, click the link below
in the video description
or just visit surfshark.deals forward slash HYPECORTOS.
It couldn't be easier.
So thanks Surfshark for sponsoring today's video.
Right, number four.
Again, we're staying in Germany.
I think this is the...
Oh no, there are some more Germans to come.
Number four then is the BMW Z4.
I was going to suggest the BMW Z3
because I think it's prettier,
but prices of Z3s are on the up
and Z4s are still quite low.
So I think that's where you should park your money.
I think the Z4 represents better value.
And if you're planning to use it more often,
the Z4 is just a more modern car.
It's certainly easier to live with.
You can pick up a decent Z4 for well under £3,000.
I've featured some on this channel
that I bought for like £1,000.
Granted, they haven't been the nicest.
But £3,000 will get you a decent one.
I'd recommend going for a six-cylinder
because the engine's just far better than the four.
And I'd recommend going for something like a Sport
or an M Sport model.
They just look better than the SEs.
Although having said that, look at this one.
So this is £2,000.
It's a 2004, 54 reg.
It's in a good colour.
It's only done 108,000 miles.
It's a 2.5 litre six-cylinder.
You know what?
That is a really pretty car.
I'm not a big fan of those wheels,
but they're not offensive.
It's manual, so it'll be good fun to drive.
You get a nice leather interior, heated seats,
and the interior design and interior dash
is just so elegant.
I think it's really timeless.
It's hard to believe, really,
you can get all that car for just £2,000.
Running costs aren't high either.
In terms of miles per gallon,
even from the big six-cylinder,
you'll get early 20s around town
and mid-30s on a run.
And weirdly, insurance tends to be
quite reasonable on them as well.
Yeah, I'm a big fan of those
and I can only see the prices going one way.
So act now.
Number five then on my little list,
we're heading over to the land of the rising sun.
It's the Toyota Celica.
Now these I think are great value.
They're really good fun to drive
and you can pick them up for peanuts.
There are currently only 37 of them
for sale on AutoTrader,
but I'm pretty sure for two and a half grand,
you'll find yourself a decent one.
My brother had one of these for years
and always enjoyed using it,
but word of warning,
they do burn a bit of oil,
so you need to make sure that you check it
every week or fortnight.
In terms of reliability,
it's probably the most reliable car
featured on this list,
so it just won't cost you an awful lot to run.
They're a chain driven 1.8 litre petrol engine,
so you don't need to replace any cam belts.
And mark my words,
in a few years time,
they will be quite sought after.
I mean, look at that one for example.
It's done 126,000 miles,
you get a nice leather interior,
you also get a decent sized boot
and it's quite a good looking car.
I think they're ageing quite nicely.
That's just reminded me actually,
you do need to watch out for rust.
Japanese cars do have a tendency to rot out,
so just get it up on a ramp
and make sure it's not completely,
you know,
gone full Flintstones.
Now sixth on the list,
we're heading back to Germany.
This is the last German featured,
don't panic.
And it's a Mercedes.
Specifically,
it's Mercedes E-Class Convertible.
Not the modern ones from 2009 onwards,
the older ones from the 90s.
I see one of these every morning on my commute in.
It's finished in dark green,
it just looks so cool and classy.
Now they are quite expensive.
When I say expensive,
I think it's an awful lot of car for the money.
But you'll be spending around £10,000.
And I believe these were all hand-built as well.
So that, for example,
is £10,000.
And that really is a safe place to invest £10,000.
That, in five or ten years time,
will be worth an awful lot of money.
It's from an era when Mercedes were built like tanks,
so that just won't go wrong.
If you're looking to buy one,
make sure it's got full service history,
make sure it's been looked after,
make sure there's no rust on it.
But I just think it's a very good usable classic.
Yeah, that's a very pretty car, that.
I'm quite pleased I featured that on the list.
Okay, then, number seven.
You'll think I've lost the plot here,
but bear with me.
It's a Land Rover.
Range Rover.
Now, specifically, it's the 1994 to 2002 model,
known as the P38.
Now, prices are already on the rise,
but if you act quick,
you can still get a bit of a bargain.
So we'll go max age 2001.
There are still lots out there,
so you should be able to pick up quite a decent one.
There are 34 available.
Now, I've always been a big fan of the P38.
They're available with a 2.5 litre diesel from BMW,
which is quite reliable,
but it's very slow.
Or a 4 litre from Rover,
or a 4.6 litre V8.
Your best bet, really, is the 4 litre.
The 4.6 can have issues.
Although, having said that,
this is a late 4.6.
This uses a Bosch electrical system,
so they are a bit more reliable.
That's finished in Benetti Grey.
That is one cool looking car, isn't it?
That's done 108,000 miles.
It's Vogue spec.
They're not without their issues, though,
so go into it with your eyes wide open.
It's just making me want one.
Sorry.
And for £2,800,
they will go the way of the range of a classic.
So in five or ten years' time,
you won't be able to get one of those P38s
for less than 10k.
Take a look at this one, for example.
So this one's a bit more expensive.
It's £4,950.
It's an early 96 model.
This one's a 4 litre.
And it says on the attention-grabbing strap line,
all usual issues fixed.
It's got the wrong wheels on.
This one's put clear indicators on it,
but that's finished in Epsom Green, I think,
is the colour name.
Nerd, honestly.
But it's a very pretty car, that.
I'm going to have to get one of these one day, aren't I?
I really am.
Oh, Rioja Red, look at that.
This one's a 4.6, finished in Rioja Red.
I think those are...
Are they called Hurricane Alloys?
I think they are.
Yeah.
I think the P38 is definitely a good example
of a cheap modern classic that's worth buying now,
before prices rise.
Next on the list.
This is a bit of an unusual one,
but I guarantee in 10, maybe 15 years time,
you'll be kicking yourself that you didn't buy one of these.
It's a Ford Cougar.
And I don't mean Cougar with a K,
I mean Cougar with a C.
Now, there are only three Ford Cougars
for sale on AutoTrader.
That one's a Cat C.
But this is what I mean,
you can still pick them up for 1,500 quid.
This one's a 2001-51 Reg.
It's only the 2 litre,
and I'd recommend going for the 2.5 V6.
But it is quite a good-looking car.
You just don't see them anymore.
If I had the space, I'd probably buy something like that
and just keep it to one side.
Throw a sheet over it,
because one day that will be a proper classic.
Now, the 2.5 litre V6 isn't particularly quick,
but it did make a nice noise.
Oh, there's one, 2.5 V6.
So that is a year 2000 X-Reg'd and 92,
and it's only two and a half grand.
It's been garaged.
Look at all the paperwork.
I think it's a really good example of a sensible modern classic.
It won't cost the earth to run.
You'll get classic car insurance.
It should be quite reliable.
It won't be all that thirsty.
Not that you're going to do many miles in it anyway.
For that kind of money, you really can't go wrong.
Next up then, we've got two left.
We're heading over to Sweden.
Now, it is the Saab 900 Cabriolet.
Now, I'm a big fan of Saabs.
I've done loads of videos with the later 9-3,
but the 900 was the 9-3's predecessor,
and they look really cool.
It's the quintessential 90 Saab,
and I was amazed that you can still pick these up
for less than £5,000.
So as you can see here,
there are still plenty of decent ones.
Take, for example, this one.
This one's a 1990 Saab 900 Classic Convertible Automatic.
It's a G, so it's a 1989, 1990.
And it is properly cool, that.
Now, if you end up buying one of these,
what I'd recommend you do is find a good Saab specialist.
Somebody like Saab Tech and Glossop are really good.
Because I guess when they get to this sort of age,
you might have difficulty sourcing parts.
Although, having said that,
they did make a good number of them,
and there will be some specialists out there.
But that is a very cool car.
If you fancy something quirky and Swedish,
but you don't want something as old as the 900,
then I would definitely recommend a 9-3.
I'm a big fan of these,
and I've featured lots of them on the channel.
So you could either go for the newer shape from 2003 onwards,
or late 2003 onwards,
like this one, finished in cerulean blue.
The fact that you can buy a car that looks like that
for £1,295 is such a bargain.
Or you could go for the previous model,
which ran from 98 to 2003.
Let me try and find one for you.
Like this, for example.
So this is 1575.
I should just buy this.
1575.
It's a 1999 V-Reg, 2-litre petrol SE automatic,
with a nice blue roof.
This is a classic example, actually,
of a car that reaches a certain age,
and people just overlook it.
In a few years' time, that will look like a proper classic.
So now's the time to buy them, I think.
I've had quite a lot of experience with them,
and they are quite reliable cars.
They're a little bit thirsty,
especially if you go for an automatic.
But you can't have it all, can you?
So take this one, for example.
This one's a private seller.
It's a 2-litre turbo SE for £1,700.
It's only done 113,000 miles.
And that's a later model as well,
so that's a late 2002.
They've also got the comfiest seats as well.
Yeah, I like that.
And certainly, I can't imagine it being that price
for that long, to be honest.
I think in another 5 or 10 years' time,
you'll be talking £15,000, £20,000.
And last on the list,
I know I said we were done with Germany,
but I lied.
It's the Porsche 944.
Now, it really amazed me that you could pick these up
for this sort of price.
Let me show you this.
Go down to Porsche, there we go.
So, 944, there are 39 available.
Look at the price of these.
So, sort by price low to high.
They start at £2,500.
And that is a proper 80s classic.
I love the pop-up headlamps.
I just love the overall design.
So this one, for example, is 7495,
recently recommissioned.
It's a 1986 on a C.
It's done 137,000 miles,
and it's finished in white,
which is quite a good colour for the 944.
Ah, that one's a cat C.
Then again, would that bother me?
I don't think it would, really.
I don't think it would on this kind of car.
I'd rather have one that's been recommissioned
that's a cat C,
as opposed to a ropey example
that hasn't been involved in an accident.
That looks really nice, actually.
I mean, that's a good colour.
They always look good in red, don't they?
So that's only done 99,000 miles,
and that is, that's stunning, isn't it?
That's really cool.
There's a little bit of scabbiness there,
but overall, I think it presents quite well.
I need to get one of these on the channel, don't I?
I haven't done a should you buy a Porsche 944 video.
I need to.
But it just amazes me that you can pick these up
for that sort of money.
8,295.
It's definitely a safe investment.
It's definitely a good place to park your money,
and you get something that looks as good as that on your driveway.
Now we're going up a little bit.
Oh, look.
So for under 10, you can get a convertible 944.
Now, I actually prefer the coupe,
prefer the hard top,
but if you want a bit of wind in your hair,
you have that option.
Yeah, that is very cool.
I like that.
Well, I think that's about it then, guys.
There are my 10 recommendations
for cheap modern classics worth buying.
There's something there for everybody,
whether it's a saloon car like a 7 Series,
something sporty,
a convertible,
or a four-wheel drive like a Range Rover.
If there are any cars you think I've missed,
then do let me know in the comments below.
So thank you once again for watching.
