Male lions are frequently "smacked" or swatted by lionesses for getting too close to, or acting too roughly with, their own cubs. While male lions are the primary defenders of the pride against outside threats, they are often clumsy or too aggressive during play, leading lionesses to deliver swift, stern reprimands to protect their young.
