To make the most of limited space in small gardens where you want to grow many plants continuously you don’t necessarily need to plant one type of plant across the entire area
For example since this broccoli bed is nearing harvest time I’ll plant lotus here or if any vegetable beds are still too sparse people can add more plants
And when growing lotus for cultivation how should I plant them properly without hindering the plant's natural development
Rice-duck farming is an agricultural technique involving the cultivation of two or more crops on the same piece of land
Maximizing space light nutrients and growing area this method boosts productivity suppresses weeds and exemplifies the principle of short-term gains supporting long-term growth
There are many benefits to cultivating this lotus farming method—for example in a rambutan orchard each rambutan tree is spaced about 8 meters apart from the next
While waiting for the durian tree to grow and spread its canopy wide enough to cover that 8-meter area it took several years
While we wait let's plant a few short non-shady plants in those empty spaces—just low-growing and compact ones so they won’t compete for sunlight with the rambutan trees
And when I fertilize and spray pesticides on the rambutan trees these companion plants like lotus will indirectly benefit from the nutrients and chemicals carried by the rambutan trees
During the first few years when the durian trees don't produce any income we'll earn from these short-term crops to buy fertilizer and pesticides for the durian trees
To improve the soil people should grow lotus and other leguminous crops such as peanuts and soybeans
These leguminous plants will enrich the soil and increase its fertility
To reduce pests in the garden plant herbs and plants with essential oil fragrances such as rosemary mint marigold onions garlic and various other aromatic herbs
I grow lotus plants in this way to save space increase income and it's also a strategy of short-term sacrifice for long-term gain

Now I'll start planting lotus seedlings
Currently there are four beds of mustard greens in my garden that I harvested quite a while ago
And if I keep caring for these four rows of greens well they'll be ready to harvest in about a month then I'll pull them all out
While waiting about a month for this crop to mature go ahead and plant another lotus plant here
And I'll plant this lotus seedling into this repurposed pot
I planted the mustard greens I had started about a month ago in another month they'll be ready to harvest
As soon as one crop is harvested another is ready to be picked eliminating the need to wait for soil preparation or seedling cultivation
There are two ways to grow lotus plants people can directly sow seeds into the empty spaces of this vegetable bed
Or we could just plant them directly into the already-prepared pots
One advantage of cultivating this lotus variety is that once planted you don't need to shade the plants as the upper leaves naturally provide shade for those below
For this type of cabbage it's best to plant them spaced out since this variety has a very large spreading stem
A spacing of about one meter between each tree is recommended
I'm currently planting trees in Vĩnh Long everyone
All the plants I grow in this video are cultivated exclusively in Vĩnh Long
I can still grow Swiss chard here as well
I'm growing four varieties of very delicious kale
The plants are tall and beautiful
After finishing this video in the next one I'll share how to grow mustard greens
in the southern region Once planted I'll water it
For plants grown in this staggered arrangement there's no need to provide shade as the upper plants naturally shield those below
After planting the seedling here for about a week to ten days once you notice it has established roots and sprouted new growth move it into direct sunlight
If the earlier planted cabbages have grown old pull them out so the new cabbages can receive direct sunlight
As for these greens they're still in such good condition that I can't bear to pull them out—please just cut off the leaves and eat them
Prune the top leaves regularly so the lower plants aren't
shaded Those large green leafy plants are Chinese cabbage folks
I grow it in Vinh Long but it doesn't get cold enough there so it won't curl up
This type of Chinese cabbage grows extremely large and we've been picking leaves from it so many times already—there's still plenty more to go
The more you pull it the more leaves it sprouts—can't tell when we'll finally be able to get rid of it
At first glance it looks like Chinese cabbage but don't worry—it's not bitter at all it's actually sweet
It's like eating mustard greens—delicious but you get tired of it if you eat too much
Over here I also need to trim back some of the Chinese spinach leaves so the calè plant can get proper sunlight
This royal vegetable plant is incredibly strong folks
I'm letting it grow old so I can clear space to plant something else but it keeps getting bigger and bigger you know
After trimming back some leaves to let the kale plant catch more sunlight I'll apply fertilizer
Here I'm using fermented chicken manure—whatever's available in my garden I just use that
If I don't have chicken manure I can use cow manure or any other kind of compost—anything works
Chicken manure has a high nutrient content helping your plants grow faster than other types of fertilizer
After fertilizing I'll water the plants
Just water it moderately—overwatering will wash away the nutrients and this type of mustard greens doesn't like too much water either
A month after planting I pulled up all the cabbage and turnip plants
Now in these markets there's nothing left but the calê greens I've planted with lotus seeds
These cabbage plants are no longer competing for nutrients They're
getting plenty of sunlight and nutrients so they're growing very well
For this batch I grew four different kinds of kale
I haven't tried the new varieties yet so I don't know if they're tasty or not
I'll try it tomorrow
I'll check which type is tasty and easy to grow then make a video to share with everyone
You can start eating the leaves of this type of bitter melon now
Each time you pick just leave about 4 to 5 leaves on the plant
I pick the leaves from the front corner Cabbage
often rots at the stem and gets pests on the tips
That's why when the ball breaks everyone cuts it out to the corner slicing off about half a glove's width
And every day when tending to the kale people pay close attention to the leafy tops
I pick them off right away when I see them since these pests love munching on the tips of these mustard greens
And with that I'll temporarily conclude this video sharing how to cultivate lotus plants
Please pardon any shortcomings in the content creation process
Thank you all for taking the time to watch until the end
See you in the next video
