Oscar, a new week, another Grand Prix. How quickly were you able to put last week behind
you and what do you think about yourself and the team's chances here in China?
Yeah, I mean it was relatively quick to put that behind me. Obviously,
yeah, one I'd rather forget. But yeah, I think having a race this weekend is always nice and
there's still plenty to focus on. There's still plenty to try and learn from all the running we
did in Melbourne. And even just for me, trying to understand what racing looks like now was
interesting to watch at least. So I think our chances, I'm not expecting it to be
dramatically different to Melbourne. I think we've identified quite a lot of areas where we
can improve and where we could have done better. But I think most people will have those
opportunities. So I think it'll be a similar picture, but hopefully we can get a bit closer.
Thank you. Did anything happen last week?
No. Nothing, right?
No. Okay, I thought so. How are you going to
close the gap to Mercedes especially and also Ferrari and on what specific things?
I think we kind of learned after qualifying especially and in the days since that we
didn't necessarily optimise what we had in Melbourne. And I think through practice,
the picture looked a lot more optimistic. I think overly optimistic at points. But
it was a surprise for us to lose so much competitiveness from Friday to Saturday.
And I think we've got a pretty good understanding of why now. So I think we can get closer.
We still think we're going to have a deficit to certainly Mercedes.
But I think we identified a lot of things we can do better.
For the last one season and a half, you came to each race knowing that you had a winning car.
It may not be the case for this weekend. Is it really painful? What does it change
your approach to a race weekend, a Grand Prix? It's not painful. No, I think obviously it's
a bit nicer when you know you can win the race. But I think at this point, there's just so many
things to learn. And I think last weekend, I think we executed the plan that we had well on
Friday and Saturday. I think it kind of became more obvious after the weekend that maybe the
plan we had wasn't the best one. But I think in terms of trying to achieve what we wanted to,
I think there was a lot of positives on that side of things. And I think through practice,
maybe it looked a bit good. Maybe others were still a bit heavier than us through practice.
But we were genuinely competitive, I think, especially over one lap. So I think just trying
to keep on top of things and keep executing and optimising things is the most important thing,
because I would say probably only Mercedes got close to optimising the package they had last
weekend, or certainly of the front contenders. And even then, I'm not sure that they did,
and I'm sure they've learnt a lot already. So I think anything you can do to fast-track
your learning is a very big opportunity at the moment.
