This is a distinct pleasure to have two of my favorites here.
Sissy Spacek. Bill, it's good to see you, man.
Congratulations on the show.
This is there's a lot of attention on this show.
And as well, there should be Castle Rock.
Welcome to Comic-Con.
How's it going so far?
So far, so good.
OK, so far, so good.
OK, you seem wary.
I'm scared. No, you're not.
You're scared, man.
You should be scared.
Be very, very scared.
It's our first one.
What are they going to do?
Everybody's being really nice.
Yeah, as I said, there's a lot of goodwill.
I think going towards the show as well, there should be.
How do we even describe this?
Is that I mean, my shorthand has been talking to other people.
It's like it's kind of a Twin Peaks ish thing, like set in the mind of Stephen King.
It's I mean, how would you describe this?
I would describe it like kind of like a Twin Peaks thing
set in the mind of Stephen King.
That sounds so good.
And I would say it's an homage to Stephen King.
No, but that was very well put.
I think that's good.
Yeah, it's like it's it's one of the shows where you know,
I've been on other shows like this, but it's it's hard to define,
you know, Twin Peaks is so hard to define that.
That's like the closest thing to it.
You know what I mean?
Right?
Yeah, the undefinable show.
So let's define this as the undefinable show, right?
It's kind of like that other show.
That's undefinable.
So but yeah, obviously Stephen King is the sort of inspirational source
and and and but it's a new original show and yeah, it's creepy.
It's weird.
It's strange.
All those things.
You summed it up.
I mean, it's I mean,
but it's cool to have.
I'll be here all night.
Yeah, perfect.
Perfect.
You can take over my job, please.
I mean to have you both involved in this is obviously a treat
for a variety of reasons besides the fact that you're wonderful
actors.
You have this great association with Stephen King and for both
of you.
I mean, I would imagine it's a question.
You ask yourself when this comes around for you sissy.
I mean going way back.
I mean, obviously this that was an important part of your career
and most recently a very a huge part of your career as well.
It was that in your mind a pro or a con or a confusing aspect
of this when the author came around.
I mean, I thought it was just fun, right?
It was yeah.
It's like a fun little trivia thing, right?
It was it was but it's accidental.
Where's Waldo?
Where is he?
It was actually I think it was actually when it was accidental
but it was like I mean talking to Sam and Dusty like that
wasn't the main reason for why they right casted us.
I think but it was like a trivia thing.
I guess a fun little thing that we're doing that.
I mean that both of our breakthroughs were they probably
thought they'll never do it.
This would be a fun thing to ask but they won't do it but
for you.
Was it just was there any trepidation?
Oh my God.
Yeah.
We'll be up at night even after I started to work.
I was thinking what the hell am I doing because you but
you know at my age.
You know, it's gonna be fun.
He's in it.
How bad can it be?
That's true.
It is an amazing ensemble that and I thought how how often
will I have, you know, him will I ever have an opportunity
to do something like this again?
Yeah, it's a it's a fun show in that like even having seen
the first four episodes like as it answers questions.
It poses more questions and I think it keeps the audience
engaged in that way.
Hopefully for you as actors, do you know before you started
shooting the first episode the scope of the season where
your characters were going and how important is that for
you?
Sounds like a no for me.
That's a great big no.
They they kind of the carrot.
They dangled for me was this episode, you know, often
toward the end where this character
got to do her thing.
And so I took the show based on what that could possibly
be right and so I was nervous and worried basically the
whole time until I got the script of that of that episode,
which we got to work with the most in that and it was so
much fun for you for you Bill.
How much did you know?
Because when we start out, we know next to nothing about
your character.
Yeah.
I mean they I remember like my friend.
He was like because I shot it already but it hadn't come
out. But my friend was like, hey, have you seen this thing
on YouTube?
Have you seen this thing on YouTube?
It was a trailer.
It's like a trailer for the show called Castle Rock and
apparently it's going to be like a TV Pennywise.
JJ Abrams doing it.
Yeah, I saw it and I'm like because there was like this
weird kind of confusing thing that they did a trailer
before the show was even cast.
And I was just like, yeah, you never saw that?
It's not even a trailer.
It's just like, you know, JJ Abrams, Stephen King and the
world and then it's just like all these and then it's just
all the titles of his old books and titles of characters
and one is like Pennywise and it looks like a Marvel like
font or something and I'm like, I just thought it was weird.
I didn't know what it was and also the creators thought
it was strange too because it didn't really represent
what the show was.
But I so I was like reluctant and they were like they
were reached out because they were interested and there
was like the kid and there was like two sentences describing
the character like it prison like unknown prisoner, right?
You're making it sound really like desperate actors.
I'll take it.
Whatever.
No, but I didn't know.
So I was like, I'm not sure how to engage in it, right?
Because they were so they're so secretive.
They were so secretive.
They were so secretive that when we started to shoot
I said, okay guys now we have to collaborate now.
We have to tell each other.
What's everything we can talk about it now.
You owe it to us to share.
No, but it's true.
But they were they were persistent and then they finally
let me read the pilot and then the pilot spoke for itself
because it's like a really strong pilot.
Yeah, like the episode is like, it's just really salmon
dusty wrote and created the show is like really good and
they're and so I read the pilot and I'm it was instantly
intrigued by the character.
I didn't know more than you know, when you see the gear
like what's going on here, but I'm intrigued.
Yeah, and and then I met with them and you know, we had
a great conversation.
They told me a little bit more about it.
They're you know, they're enthusiastic to the project
and and and you know, and I actually asked me.
I'm like just you guys are because I saw the little trailer
thing anyway, so showing up to am I not like Pennywise
or something in it, right?
Like that's the reveal that it's I'm also TV Pennywise
now and they're like, no, no, no, it's definitely it's
a different thing.
Right and but that yeah, they did they were still like
secretive and I'm like for me to do the character.
I need to know what my character.
Yeah, whatever my character knows at this point.
That's what I need to know.
Yeah, I don't necessarily need to know how it ends right
because your character doesn't know how it is.
There's such a you know, there's always that fear that people
are going to find out what you know where it's going and
but it's almost like they don't want to spoil it for you
as you're doing it tune in to find out how your character
don't worry about me worry about the audience.
I can find out it's okay.
Yeah, you can tell us really.
Yeah, seriously.
We know now.
Looking at this great ensemble.
Is there outside of your own character?
You had a shot to play another character in this cast.
I think I'd play you.
Yeah.
No, actually.
Thank you.
I think your character is amazing.
They had a hard time getting us in the same frame though.
You make a real difficult for all of us Bill.
Come on.
Yeah.
I know you're knee-deep in shooting it chapter 2 right
now, but we're all very excited about that.
I'm just curious.
Like did you make any adjustments?
Like are there significant changes that you having the
second crack at it and this go around for Pennywise things
you didn't get to the character.
I haven't I haven't started shooting yet.
Oh, you haven't know but I we had the read-through and
rehearsals and getting into it.
It's a I was surprised how so I'm not spoiling anything
but we did like a little test like a VFX test thing in you
know, a couple of weeks a month back.
And they were still working on the script.
So I hadn't read the new draft of the script.
I really really early one.
Yeah.
So and you know, Andy the director just like sent me a
scene and he's like, but like the night before or something.
Yeah, and he's like here's this we're doing the scene for
this camera VFX camera thing.
Yeah.
I mean it's not for the movie, but it's we want we want to
see how whatever it's something place.
Yeah, and I'm like, okay, like that's weird.
Like I have you know, I haven't learned something but it's
like the Latin, you know, I was like already tired.
I'm like, oh, this is weird, you know, and the character
I'm like, I'm not ready.
I'm not I was not in the place to like I thought access
character and then we went in, you know, when in the next
day, he's in Toronto.
I was in LA.
So he was like on a screen thing and we did, you know,
motion capture thing and and then I play and then just
like, you know, I'm like, all right, you know talking.
Okay.
Well, it's Toronto going like it's like a reaction and
******* Pennywise came out and I was like, oh ----.
Let's go in there.
Yeah, I didn't even know that how much of him was just
still there latent ready to pop.
It's frightening to know.
Yeah, he's always going to be there now.
Don't we be afraid?
Yeah, but it was.
It was it was it was great and I was like, oh like, you
know, and then the VFX guy was like, oh, I've missed him
Pennywise good to see him again after we did it and I'm
like, yeah, I guess I've missed him too.
Are you looking forward to scaring the crap out of not
the only the kids but this amazing adult cast like who
among the MacAvoy Chastain who are you looking forward
to just frightening until the I'm a big fan of all of
them.
Actually, there's a great cast.
I think we'll be fun working with Bill Hader.
Yeah.
He had this idea of a thought was really funny because
he's doing a Barry lumber.
And yes, it's so great to show so great, but he's doing
Barry and he was like I thought I thought it'd be funny
Bill if you know, because I you know, he's shooting it
now.
It's like so he has to do the read-through or Barry.
Yeah, the pilot or the second episode, you know episode
one of season two while he's in Toronto.
So he's like it'd be really funny if you know, we're
you know, so he's on Skype right and then I'm as Pennywise
just sitting behind him just reading like the mundane
characters like, you know, clerk clerk just like as Pennywise
just just stone face in the background for the group
of people that doing the show.
I thought it was really funny Pennywise special appearance
on the morning.
Yeah, very Barry season to something to look forward
to.
