Hi hello this is Chinese For Us Beginner's Basic Chinese Course Lesson 1
I'm Lily
Today we'll learn how to introduce ourselves in Chinese
When we meet someone new we say hello and introduce
ourselves So we say hello in Chinese with nǐ hǎo
Hello it literally means good well or okay
Hello
So "nǐ hǎo" is kind of like saying "I bet you're doing well or okay today "
Did you notice that the tones for nǐ and hǎo don't sound the same when said together
When spoken separately both are pronounced with a third tone
When combined they are pronounced like this
When two third tones occur together the first one changes to a second
tone but it's still written as a third
tone Then we'll introduce ourselves
There are two different ways to introduce yourself in Chinese A Chinese name consists of two
parts: the family name and the given name The
family name comes first followed by the given name
The surname is more likely just one character and the given name usually
consists of one or two characters For
example Bruce Lee's Chinese name is
Li Xiao Long where Li is his family name and Xiao Long is his given name
Literally it means little dragon
And Jackie Chan's Chinese name is chéng lóng
His last name is chéng and his first name is lóng
Literally it means to become a dragon
And my name is Hao Li Hao is my last name and Li is my first name
So here are two ways to introduce yourself
My surname is I am called and my given name is I am known as
In both cases xìng and jiào serve as verbs in the sentence
So this is how I
introduce my last name
My last name is Hao I'm Hao my last name is Hao
And if Bruce Lee wanted to share his last name what would he say
My last name is Li
Now can you tell me your last name If you don't have
a Chinese name yet just say it in your own language
My last name is plus your last name
Very good very good
And another way to introduce yourself is my name is
You can typically use it to introduce either your full name or
just your first name afterward For example my full name is Hao Li
My name is Hao Li I go by Hao Li
And if it's Jackie Chan introducing his full name what would he say
My name is Cheng Long
Also you can say wǒ jiào followed by your first name but there's
one exception: when your first name is just one character like mine
You can't introduce yourself using only your first name So I
can't say "I'm Li " I have to say "I'm Hao Li" with my full name
My name is Li and my nickname consists of two characters
Therefore "jiào" cannot be followed by just one character
Now can you introduce your first name using the phrase wǒ jiào You can
also say it in your own language: wǒ jiào followed by your first name
Very good very good
So we've learned two ways to introduce ourselves my name is and I'm called
Let me introduce myself once more and then it'll be your turn
Hello my name is Hao I'm Li
Now suppose you're going to China and meeting your landlord
Her name is Qian Ying
She's going to say hello to you and introduce herself
Can you say hello and introduce yourself
And this time no pinyin
Hello my name is Qian and I'm Qian Ying
My last name is your last name my first name is your first name
Very good very nice
