How can a plant species bloom amidst deep water and soft mud
In many parts of Vietnam wetlands marshes and rice paddies are often regarded as tranquil landscapes
The water lay still a gentle breeze stirred the air and occasionally the distant sounds of insects or birds echoed through the silence
But upon closer inspection you'll realize that those seemingly still objects are actually part of a vibrant world
Floating on the water's surface sandwiched between the soft mud below and the sunlight above these plants have found their own unique way to survive
They do not grow on dry land like many other plant species
They live in water float on its surface or emerge from deep mud up to the lake's surface
And when the season arrives they bloom into unexpectedly beautiful flowers
Those flowers not only make the water more vibrant
They also mark the beginning of many stories in nature
The story of insects seeking nectar frogs resting on leaves and an entire ecosystem quietly thriving
In this video we'll explore five special flower species commonly found in Vietnam's water regions
Each species has its own unique way of life
Each species contributes a distinct piece to the mosaic of wetland ecosystems
One of the most familiar flowers of Vietnam's waters is the lotus
Unlike many other aquatic plants the lotus not only floats on the water's surface but also rises gracefully above it
From the thick layer of mud at the bottom of the pond or swamp long trunks began to rise
They carried large round leaves and eventually flowers bloomed above the water's surface
From a distance a lotus pond looks like a floating garden in the middle of a lake
What makes the lotus special isn't just its beauty but also the highly unique surface structure of its leaves
Water barely clings to the leaf rolling off instead in tiny droplets
This phenomenon in science is known as the lotus effect a mechanism that keeps leaves clean and dry
As a result the plant can still photosynthesize efficiently even in a humid environment
When the flowering season arrives large lotus blossoms begin to bloom
Their pink or white petals stand out vidly against the green foliage
For many insect species this is a vital nectar source
Butterflies and beetles often visit lotus flowers to collect nectar and pollen
In the process they inadvertently help pollinate the plant
Thus each lotus flower is not merely a flower it is a
meeting point between the plant world and the insect realm
But not every aquatic plant grows as tall as the lotus
Some species have chosen a completely different way of life
They don't strive to rise above the water instead they transform the water's surface itself into their home
And there each floating leaf becomes a tiny island of
life That is the lotus flower
Water lies don't grow as tall as lotus flowers
Instead it lives almost entirely on the water's surface
The round leaves of the plant float on the water's surface spreading out like green plates
Among those leaves the lotus flowers began to bloom
Water lies typically come in a variety of colors including white-pink purple or light blue
Each flower nestled close to the water's surface drifts gently across the lake
Interestingly many water lily species bloom in response to light
In the morning as sunlight begins to appear the flowers gradually bloom
By afternoon or evening the petals close again
This cycle repeats over several days
Water lily leaves also play a vital role in the small ecosystem on the water's surface
They become resting spots for dragonflies water beetles and sometimes even small frogs
If you observe a lotus pond for a few minutes you'll notice various creatures moving among the leaves
Those leaves floated on the water's surface like tiny peaches
Yet in the world of floating plants not all are as peaceful as that
One species has developed an astonishing defense system
Its eyes were as large as shields and covered in hundreds of sharp spines
In the swamp he was a true warrior of the water
Let us immerse ourselves in the beauty of the thorn gun also known as the nia gun
From the very first glance you can tell the difference The cactus 's
leaves are extremely large sometimes exceeding a meter in width
But what stands out most is the dense layer of sharp spines covering both the leaves and the petioles
Why would a plant living in water need so many spines
Scientists believe this is a way to protect the leaves from plant-eating animals
In swamp environments many species of fish snails or other animals can feed on soft leaves
But the spines help limit this
The flowers of the gunnera are purple or pale purple They
typically bloom low above the water surface among large leaves
From a distance the thorny marsh looks like a water surface covered in enormous round leaves
Beneath those leaves another world unfolds—tiny fish aquatic insects and numerous other creatures dwell in hiding
In aquatic environments not all water plants easily anchor themselves
in the mud Some species instead opt for a more free-floating lifestyle
A very familiar example often referred to as water hyacinth or duckweed
Unlike lotuses or water lies water hyacinths don't need to cling tightly to the bottom
Its body has small bulges resembling air-filled moldings
Thus the entire plant can float on the water's surface
When the wind blows or the water flows clusters of water hyacinths can drift along rivers or canals
In spring pale purple blossoms begin to bloom
From a distance a stretch of river can be softly tinted purple by the flowers
Water hyacinth is both an integral part of the ecosystem and a plant capable of rapid growth
In many tropical regions they can completely cover the water surface if left unchecked
Yet their blossoms remain one of the most familiar sights along many Vietnamese rivers and among the Vietnamese people
Yet in this world not all aquatic flowers are large or easily visible
In shallow rice fields and small marshes there are very humble flowers
They are much smaller yet bloom into hundreds of flowers all at once
And sometimes it's precisely those small unassuming flowers that form the foundation of an entire ecosystem
It's yellow water hyacinth or water lettuce
This plant typically grows in paddy fields canals or shallowly flooded areas
Their leaves grow low close to the water's surface
Among the leaves small yellow flowers appear
From a distance you might see only small yellow dots amid the green of the leaves
But upon closer inspection each flower reveals a remarkably intricate structure
Small insects often visit these flowers to search for pollen
In rice paddies or swamps hundreds of such small flowers may bloom simultaneously
Though not as striking as xen or firearms they remain an integral part of the ecosystem
Still waters sometimes give the impression that they harbor little life
The reality is entirely different From tall reeds reaching
upward to lotus flowers drifting gently across the lake's surface
From the giant spiky leaves of the spiky plant to the floating lotus pods drifting along the water and even the tiny flowers of the flooded rice fields
Together they form a diverse ecosystem
These flowers exist not merely to bloom
They provide shelter for insects and small animals
They serve as a food source for many species
Moreover they help maintain balance in the aquatic environment
If ever you find yourself beside a lotus pond or a tranquil lake on a quiet morning take a moment to observe it more closely
You can see dragonflies flying across the water's surface
Hearing frogs croaking among the leaves
Or seeing a bee searching for nectar
Everything small begins with flowers
The blossoms transformed what had been seemingly still waters into floating gardens of nature
