Hiker Hears Cry For Help On A Mountain And Solves A Month's Long Mystery
In mid-May, Zachary Hackett was hiking alone on a mountain in Summit County, Colorado,
when something unexpected happened. He had wandered off the trail and was hurrying to head
back before sunset when he suddenly heard a faint, strange sound coming from behind a group of fallen
trees. At first, Hackett wasn't sure what he had heard. The mountain was quiet and the light was
fading fast, but then he heard it again a tiny yip. Curious and concerned, he moved toward the
sound to investigate. As he got closer, Hackett spotted a dog trembling behind a tree. The poor
animal looked extremely weak and thin, as if he hadn't eaten in days. It was clear the little
dog had been struggling to survive on the mountain for quite some time. Hackett approached slowly,
speaking softly so the frightened pup wouldn't panic. The closer he got, the more he realized
just how desperate the situation was. The dog could barely lift his head and was far too weak to stand,
run, or search for food. Feeling that the tiny bark was likely the dog's last cry for help,
Hackett wrapped the exhausted pup in his windbreaker and began carrying him down the
mountain. The journey back wasn't easy and took nearly two hours, but Hackett refused to give up
on the fragile little survivor. What Hackett didn't realize at the time was that the dog was
an eight-year-old Shetland Sheepdog named Riley, who had gone missing five weeks earlier. His owner
had been desperately searching for him with the help of Summit Lost Pet Rescue and many volunteers.
After bringing Riley home, Hackett carefully cleaned him and gave him water. The next morning,
since the dog was still extremely weak, he took him to the Summit County Animal Shelter.
There, an animal control officer immediately recognized the missing dog. Soon after,
Riley was reunited with his owner, who rushed to the shelter as soon as he heard the news.
The emotional reunion was unforgettable, and thanks to Hackett's kindness and quick action,
the lost dog finally made it back home safe after weeks of struggling to survive.
