The Baitun Mazu Temple with a history of nearly two centuries is about four hundred kilometers from Gulidu and the journey becomes rich and meaningful when made on foot as if guided by the voice of Mazu Until designated as an essential folk custom of national historical and cultural significance Every spring during the holiday season devout followers from all over the country gather at the Baisha Dun Palace to follow the sacred pilgrimage route in honor of Mazu In recent years the number of participants has steadily increased Recently the number has reached two hundred thousand Pilgrims who come to pay homage are called "long-legged ones " including young people elders and parents bringing their children all joining together in a large-scale event that blends religious faith personal challenge and safe spiritual practice Along the route Hakka shops offer free food and drinks—refreshments fruits and grilled treats— served generously from their storefronts all embodying the warm hospitality of Taiwanese people Bashadong Palace is the destination of the pilgrimage located behind the Hakka ancestral hall and is cleaned regularly at all times Sometimes guided by Mazu tens of thousands walk from morning till night then from night until dawn—travelling over thirty hours on foot covering nearly 150 kilometers Testing the follower's determination and stamina Like the hard-earned eternal incense walking there on foot to return to Baisha Dun praying for safety upon arrival Pilgrims on their way to offer incense pass through four checkpoints sometimes greeted by beautiful scenery sometimes facing mountains blanketed in mist yet the faithful remain resolute in their steps marching forward in devotion to Mazu their hearts unwavering in faith The unwavering spiral After a long journey of watching mountains and crossing roads Mazu returns to the township of Bai Sha Dun cherished by numerous temples and devotees Believers joyfully celebrate with one another and agree to commemorate it annually This is our land our faith our culture our strength
