As the Senate begins a showdown over the Save America Act, what do everyday Americans make
of the measure? Entity Sam Wong was out on the National Mall in D.C. to hear from the people.
What are your thoughts on the Save America Act? You know, it's a bill that requires voter ID at
the polls and proof of citizenship when registering to vote. What do you think?
It's the law, so I really don't feel any issue with it as far as it being an act.
How can it be voter suppression if you're required to be a citizen anyway?
You know, we need to have people vetted in this country if they're going to live and vote. I mean,
we have laws for a reason, we have rules for a reason. You know, if you start trying to require
people to have extra ID, some people don't have the ability to go out and get a passport,
so I think it's going to disenfranchise a lot of voters out there. I think if they don't have
a birth certificate or passport, they shouldn't drive, they shouldn't be able to drink, they
shouldn't be able to go to the doctor, they shouldn't be able to do a lot of things that
they're already doing. They have to have an ID for all of those things, so why should they not
have an ID to vote? Why should someone that is not a US citizen take my vote away? So I mean,
it's common sense. This is according to Gallup polls. 83 to 84% of the people support some form
of voter ID mandates at the polls. Do you think this is a sufficient enough reason to justify the
passage of the bill? Sure. I think if the majority of people want it, they should get it. I have to
use, I'm in Florida and I have to use an ID when I vote. Well, yeah, I think we have some
guardrails in place right now. But don't make it difficult to the point where people gotta go and
you got married or something, change your name, you gotta go find your birth certificate,
don't have it, so we gotta go get a passport. I don't even have a passport, and I'm the mayor
of my city, and I don't think we should do that. I think we should keep it simple.
Some of them, they're gonna say no no matter what. I always believed that you needed to be
a citizen. I was always told you had to be a citizen to vote. They need to understand that
the general public, the average American wants election security. I mean to rent my hotel room
while I'm here in DC. I had to show my ID.
