This itinerary starts right here from Piazza Garibaldi where every day at noon they fire a cannon.
It's a tradition that's been going on for almost 200 years. Originally it started from Castel Sant'Angelo
and it was done in an effort to synchronize all of the clocks and bells throughout the city.
Today the tradition continues right here from Piazza Garibaldi.
So get up to Piazza Garibaldi before noon so you can start this itinerary off with a bang.
Piazza Garibaldi is where this self-guided GPS walking tour starts and from here we're
going to go visit many of Rome's most famous fountains. Rome has over 2,000 fountains. We're
some of my favorite fountains in Rome and we're going to grab some street food along
the way because I find the fountains are perfect places to eat street food.
Throughout Rome there are very few benches, very few places to sit down,
but at the fountains many of them offer steps, places to sit down, relax, enjoy some street food,
enjoy some great views, the atmosphere. It's a perfect place for street food in my opinion
and that's what this video is all about street food and fountains.
To make it super easy for you to follow along I'm going to be using an app called Komoot. I'm
going to put a link to the GPS route in the description of the video. You can upload that
and then it'll show you turn by turn where to go. The app Komoot is super user-friendly and I think
you'll find it super helpful as you follow along if you're in Rome and you want to do this. It'll
take you starting here at Piazza Garibaldi through the city past great sites, great fountains, great
street food. It's going to be a lot of fun. I've got lots to share with you. Let's get started.
The first fountain we're going to visit is La Fontana dell'Acqua Paola also known as the
big fountain. This is one of my favorite fountains and it's located just a short walk from Piazza
Garibaldi. This fountain is absolutely massive and it has an elevated location so not only are
you visiting a fountain you're also going to get a great view over the city of Rome.
Ideal any time of day. In the evenings it's quite romantic so if you had the opportunity
to head back up in the evening but again any time of day it's quite spectacular.
The fountain was originally built in the early 1600s from scavenged
ancient Roman ruins so there's a lot more to this fountain than initially meets the eye.
I promise you great street food and our first stop is one of our favorite restaurants called
Let's head there now. If you saw the cannon go off you're probably arriving here sometime
afternoon and this place opens up at noon. It's called Checco e Caratiere. It's a great restaurant
really nice food but here at the back door they sell the food at a substantial discount. They
turn gourmet food into street food. So what we're going to order today is one of the pastas. We're
but I suggest you get the fried artichokes or the fried cod. Both are great. Anything
from here is awesome. Anything you get from here head out to the fountain and enjoy it.
La Fontana di Santa Maria in Trastevere is considered the oldest fountain in Rome
some dating it back to the 8th century and further. It makes a great place to just sit
down relax enjoy the square and enjoy some awesome street food. So we just went to Checco
picked up some food and we're going to enjoy it on the set. We'll show you what we got.
What do you got in there? Oh look at that. Look at this here. We got the fried artichokes. These
are awesome by the way. These are fried artichokes. Now they're like battered but these are like
so good. And we haven't had anything else like this in Rome. We've had a different
style fried artichoke but not this time. For main course we got a pasta this time. We got
the amatriciana pasta and that's a big serving of it. I don't know if you can tell. They give
you the spoons and the forks and stuff the napkins so you can enjoy it here you know anywhere.
So here's the look at the pasta. Look at that stuff. It's a big old plate of it. If you're
heading to Rome be sure to check out our travel guide. It's all about Rome how to help you have
a great time in Rome. I'll leave a discount code in the description of the video where you can pick
it up for right around $25. Now we're heading off to the Jewish quarter to get a very unique
pastry called Jewish pizza. Baccione is Rome's most famous Jewish bakery. At times you have to
stand in quite a long line to get in but it's well worth it. Everything from here is awesome
but what I love is the Jewish pizza. About 100 yards away is La Fontana della Tartarughe,
the turtle fountain where we can go and enjoy the pizza.
So over in the Jewish quarter there's a place called Baccione where you get these
this is called Jewish pizza. I don't know how well you can see it but the Jewish pizza
it may not look super impressive. I've talked about this in other videos but this stuff is
some of my favorites. One of my favorite pastries. They call it pizza. It's more like a pastry.
So good. There's so many good things from there whether you get this or some one of their other
pastries. You can come out here to the turtle fountain. You can't really sit down. I mean this
is you can kind of sit down here but you can kind of sit down here and just enjoy the fountain.
Enjoy the Jewish pizza. It doesn't get better than this. Here's an interesting fact about the
turtle fountain. The turtle fountain was built in 1581 but the turtles were not added until about
1658 by Bernini and in 1906, 1944, and 1981 the turtles were stolen. Each time they were recovered
but they were stolen. So at around 1980-ish they moved those into the Capitoline Museum
where you can see them today. The turtles on the fountain are actually replicas.
Are you ready for the best panino in all of Rome? Let's head there now.
Now it's time to pick up a couple of panini and take them over to Piazza Farnese.
My favorites are the mortadella and the prosciutto crudo with mozzarella but
every sandwich I've eaten there has been wonderful. The best in Rome in my opinion.
So we're over here at the Forno in Campo dei Fiori. Again these are the best panini. The
sandwiches that I've found in all of Rome. We love them. Every time we come by here we grab one
and then we're right here in Piazza Farnese. There's a beautiful square right next to Campo
dei Fiori. Campo dei Fiori is chaotic. A lot of vendors, a lot of stuff going on there all day
long. Just 20, 30, 40 meters away is Piazza Farnese. Much more relaxing. You can come down here
and enjoy a panino right at the fountain. You know it's the good life. I want to show you
this sandwich real quick. I don't know how well you can see it but all it is is pizza bianca with
mortadella in the middle. Very simple but it's amazing how good this can taste. Just those two
ingredients. They're big. This was three and a half euros. Just phenomenal. Just phenomenal.
First off I just wanted to show you how beautiful these fountains are at night time. They're
absolutely stunning. We're here in Piazza Farnese. These are the fountains of Piazza Farnese. There
are two of them. One on each end. This is in a very important square. It's right next to the
Palazzo Farnese. One of the most important buildings. Today it's the French embassy and
then another really interesting thing. These tubs. These are absolutely gorgeous. These are huge.
These come from the Baths of Cartacalla from the second or third century. Just absolutely stunning.
Great place to hang out and enjoy some street food. Don't forget to like, leave a comment, or
subscribe to the channel. Our channel is all about Rome. I need to get to 50,000 subscribers by
June. I've got six months. My wife says my YouTube dreams may become to an end if I don't. That's how
we survive as YouTubers. We need subscribers. But of course we want you to enjoy our content and
hopefully you do. Now let's head over to Piazza Navona. It doesn't have just one fountain. Not
two. But it has three fountains. One of our favorite squares to come out to and just enjoy
some food. Enjoy the atmosphere is Piazza Navona. It's absolutely incredible. And they have these
fountains here. You can just sit down. They're kind of like built-in benches. You can sit down
and just around the corner there's two great places for you to choose from. Just down the road
maybe a three, four, five minute walk at most. You've got Frigidarium. One of my favorite gelaterias.
And it's great to grab a gelato. Head back out to the square and enjoy it there. Or if you're in the
mood for Tiramisu. Some of the best Tiramisu in Rome is sold right around the corner. Just a two
minute, three minute walk from Piazza Navona. Which is two sizes. Sometimes you got to wait in a long
line to get it. But uh most people say it's worth it. So give it a try. I thought it was great. I
thought it was a little bit rich for my taste. But very good. From here it's just a five minute walk
over to the Pantheon. Let's head there now. Once you make it over to the Pantheon you'll notice
there's a huge fountain right in the center with the obelisk on top. Well that obelisk is actually
older than the Pantheon. That dates back more than 3,000 years. All the way to Rameses. One of my
favorite places to eat lunch in Rome is right there on those steps of that fountain. Lately
they've been cracking down on people. Telling them they can't eat on those steps. It just depends when
you're there. Hopefully when you go there if you do that you'll be able to sit down and enjoy lunch.
But anyway there are three great choices right in that area. The first is L'Antico Vinaio. That's
the most popular the probably the most famous sandwich place in Rome. It started in Florence
actually. But now there's three or four locations in Rome. The most popular location is right there
by the Pantheon. Unfortunately you may have to wait in quite a line to get a sandwich.
Hey are these are these sandwiches that good? Sorry? You speak Italian? Yeah.
Are they worth the wait?
The sandwiches are quite large so sharing them is a good idea if you're not super hungry.
Also there's a little salami shop right there called L'Antico Salumeria which also makes
fantastic sandwiches. They sell them by the weight so it just depends how big your sandwich
is and how much you're going to have to pay for it. But both of those places
they're plus or minus 10 euros for a sandwich. You guys speak English? No.
Are they good? Are they good?
Another great option if you're not in the mood for a sandwich or something substantial maybe you
just want a cup of coffee a cappuccino or something like that there is Casa del Cafe right there
right off the square of the Pantheon. It's one of Rome's most famous coffee houses. Jump in there
and I think you're going to love it if you like coffee. Now it's time to head over to Rome's most
popular fountain Trevi Fountain. It's about a 10 minute walk from the Pantheon. While we're
visiting the Trevi Fountain it's not the best fountain to enjoy street food or any food for
that matter. It's just too crowded no real place to sit down and so yeah you can get food around
the area take it somewhere else but probably not at Trevi Fountain. Now we're going to head over to
a very unique fountain located right in front of the Spanish Steps. At the base of the Spanish Steps
there's a fountain known as the Ugly Boat Fountain. Well that fountain was actually inspired by a flood
that took place on Christmas day in 1598. The water is raised so high that a boat actually
got stranded there. When the when the waters receded there was a boat at that exact location
that inspired the building of that fountain and also worth noting that fountain works also as a
drinking fountain. On either end of the fountain you can go over and fill up your water bottles.
The water tastes great despite it looking like it's fountain water it's actually fresh clean
drinkable water. You can't finish this itinerary without showing you one of Rome's most ugly
fountains charming but ugly. So right behind me is the statue of the babuino the baboon. Now
originally it wasn't known as that it's Salinas which is a mythical creature half goat half man
it was later called the statue the baboon because people made fun of it it was kind of so ugly that
it just became known as the baboon. Now while it became ugly it also became very popular
in fact they eventually renamed the street here that it's on to via del babuino. For those of you
that stuck around to the end of the video I really appreciate it. If you're not tired of me and you
want to see one more video I just completed a video about a week ago about Trastevere. It's a
neighborhood in Rome it's about all the great food great things to do and see while you're
in Trastevere. It's the best of Trastevere and that video is coming up right now.
