The car theft that gives new meaning to the term push to start.
Video shows a group of thieves pushing a muscle car down the street
before starting it up and driving away.
Today police tell us they believe this was not a first for the suspect.
Thursday afternoon, I'm Sarah Bloomquist.
And I'm Brian Taft.
The big story on Action News today is the theft of that costly custom Dodge Charger
in South Jersey.
That crime, as you saw captured on surveillance video,
showing one of the suspects apparently armed with a gun.
New Jersey correspondent Trish Hartman spoke with the car's owners today.
She's live in Washington Township with the full story.
Trish.
Yes, Sarah.
Brian, she said that it was frightening to see on the video what had happened
after the fact.
Now police say these suspects clearly had done this before.
They say this type of muscle car is in high demand,
and they're asking for the public's help in finding these suspects or the car.
A Washington Township family woke up to their custom Dodge Charger stolen
out of their driveway, and it was all caught on video.
My view showed where they came from.
It showed that one of the gentlemen had a weapon.
It was around 3.15 a.m. Saturday.
The video shows two suspects approach the red 2019 Dodge Charger Daytona
in the driveway of a home on Doe Court.
I jumped out the bed and ran to the bathroom and to my husband.
I said, the car is gone.
And I immediately called 911.
Police say one suspect breaks the rear passenger window to get in.
They then push the car out of the driveway, police say,
to Herffville Elementary School across the street
where there were two other vehicles waiting.
Police say one of them is believed to be a second stolen Dodge Charger.
The homeowner, who doesn't want to be identified,
said the scariest part is that one of the suspects was armed with a handgun,
according to police.
Had I came out here, there's no telling what would have happened to me.
She believes they waited to start the car so they wouldn't get caught.
That car is very loud.
I would have heard it.
Police Chief Patrick Gersick says Dodge Chargers are highly sought after by thieves.
This one was worth over $100,000.
Extremely popular, especially on the black market, and extremely fast.
So they're able to re-vent it or send it to a chop shop
and able to break it up into parts and sell the parts.
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau,
the Dodge Charger ranks sixth nationally in a list of most stolen newer model vehicles.
Keep it in the garage, locked up.
There's a Faraday pouch, which you can put your keys in it.
It prevents bad guys from reprogramming your key.
And he also says steering wheel locks would also be effective here.
Now, police say the Charger in this case was last seen
heading over the Walt Whitman Bridge into Philadelphia
minutes after it was stolen and after it left the township.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact police.
We're live in Washington Township, New Jersey, Trish Hartman, Channel 6 Action News.
Sarah.
Trish, thank you.
