So West Ham United looking to end their run of 11 games without a win against Manchester
United. The Red Devils hoping to put Sunday's cup heartbreak behind them. Down the line for
Lundqvist and combining it's effectively in these opening stages on the right hand side.
Zalem shows far too much of that to Elizabeth Turland who has the game's first opportunity.
The deflection took the power off the strike. It was easy in the end for Kinga Szemek.
Yeah not the shot that Turland wanted there I don't think. She puts it on her left foot and
doesn't get too much power behind it. If Turland had taken the shot a little bit sooner she
probably would have got a little bit better connection on the right foot with it as well.
Going more direct this time. Here goes Turland. Looking across for Shuler in support.
Up against Hansen. Looking for her strike partner. Still come here for Jess Park.
To her left foot. Going for goal. Nice routine stop in the end for Szemek. Yeah Jess Park's done
really well to create a little bit of space for herself on her left foot there but easily held
by the keeper. Now it's looking as though West Ham United have settled back into these women's
Super League action much quicker than Manchester United. Asayi taking responsibility. Driving
right at the United defence and unable to keep her effort down. She's done so well to get into
the position that she's she's got and she's done so well up against Maila to see her then. Takes
her one way takes her the other and just leans back when she takes the shot with her left foot
doesn't she but absolutely brilliant run. Still very disciplined in the defensive structure the
Park is open here on this near side. Turn ball back for Zygioti. Really good save to her right
hand side by Kinga Szemek. Zygioti does exactly what I think she should be doing in that situation
going for that far post and maybe not got enough power to make it past Szemek but really good
chance for Zygioti then. Zygioti here for Norsund. Here's the ball in. There's the header and what a
save again. Kinga Szemek denying Elisabeth Terland. Down to her left hand side a really strong hand
to deny the Norwegian. Fair play to Szemek you know she's got down and she's been able to tip
that round of posts to save her team. Blumen. Lovely touch that by Shuler to release Park.
Options in the middle. Terland's waiting for the ball back. There is Terland.
Couldn't keep her shot down. That is a massive chance missed there. Jess Park
picks the right pass and Terland just leans back as she strikes it with her right foot
bouncing. It could maybe blame the pitch but Terland's got to do better there and
put that in the back of the net for a team. Hansen for Lundqvist. Another deep delivery.
Back across the face of goal. Huge chance for a penalty. Lea Shuler. Abigail Byrne quite happy
to just wave play on. I don't think there's enough in that to give a penalty if I'm being totally
honest with you. It's worth pointing out that West Ham United are one of just two WSL sides yet
to keep a clean sheet this season. Rolfe's ball was set. Brilliantly weighted cross and Shuler
denied by Schemmich. What a great ball from Rolfe down this left-hand side and a good header from
Shuler. She's running onto it. She tries to direct it into that corner, doesn't she? But again,
Schemmich saving the team. Gets two good hands on it and gets it away. Nice touch and turn.
Space for Morgan to maraud on this right-hand side. Two to aim for. In it goes towards Vivian
Asai. Who should have done better? Asai's wide open. She's unmarked in the box. Fionn Morgan's
picked out a perfect ball into her and she's just not got the power behind the header. That's such
a good opportunity for West Ham. Do have plenty of firepower still on the pitch. Manchester United,
one of them trying to get in behind here. Schemmich had to be brave. It's Mallard.
Shuler couldn't get in. Brilliant defending on the goal line, even Nystrom.
A childhood Manchester United fan denying the Red Devils. Yeah, Nystrom, what a block off
basically the line there to keep a team in it. The keeper does well to get out to the ball but
Mallard's able to get a shot off but great defending from Nystrom there.
She very nearly made a huge impact from the bench. Vangaheim was able to turn eventually but
Manchester United will use this as a chance to send players forward.
So then their captain taking responsibility late in this game, sending it forward.
Melvi Mallard. Mallard does well to get the shot off on her right foot there at such a tight angle
and just ends up hitting the side netting. It's now or never for Manchester United.
Talish Joyce can send it forward again, flicked on by Ziggioti. West Ham have shot out Manchester
United to secure a massive point in the Barclays Women's Super League relegation fight. It is
their first top flight clean sheet this season and one which creates daylights between them
and Leicester City at the bottom of the table. Rita Carino's side deliver a hammer blow to
Manchester United's European qualification hopes. They were frustrated, they were kept at arm's
length this evening as it finishes in East London. West Ham United nil, Manchester United nil.
Congratulations, a clean sheet and you were a really big part of that. How are you feeling
after that? Yeah I feel really good, a really important point from us today and we were
fighting the whole 90 plus minutes so I'm really proud of the team. Hannah, a tough game and unable
to break down West Ham in the end. What are your thoughts after that? Very frustrating as you say,
it's hard to break them down. They do a good job defending their box but I think that we don't come
up to the level that we should today and obviously very disappointed to not go away with the three
points. What do you think was missing from your team from an attacking perspective because you
defended really well? Yeah I mean we could see we had some good chances from the cutback in the
first half and they had some good saves but to just keep doing those counter movements make it
a bit harder for them and not let them just lay in their block and mark us easily. I think that
would have been good to get first to the ball in the box and get it in the net. Rita, first
clean sheet of the season for West Ham, how are you feeling after that performance? I'm very happy
because the players stay on the plan in what we prepare and what we want to be. I saw the spirit
of West Ham this night in front of our fans so it's an important point. And on the defending
particular you've brought a real Italian philosophy to defending. It was such a well-drilled side.
Is that something that you've come in and thought you want to fix first of all? You know we concede
the easy goal in the past so it was very important especially against this team and that the quality
that they have. The first is defending because you don't need to concede the easy goal
against this team. So we will prepare that and the girls, they've done very well.
What's your assessment of that match? Yeah look I felt that we were a better team.
I think we had high territory, didn't make West Ham defend enough of the dangerous chances that
we created a couple in the first half. I genuinely believe there's a Stonewall penalty again.
They just don't get them. I think if we have VAR in this league I think it does affect. But
that aside I think West Ham defended really well. Resolutely on a difficult pitch for both
teams to play any style of football and West Ham are used to it and defended it really well. So
beating a block on a bubbly pitch is a difficult task and it's found difficult tonight.
Ahead of this game you asked your team to be more ruthless. Was that an issue for you tonight?
Do you think or was it more about the actual build-up play and getting the ball into the
penalty area? Yeah look I'm sure there were moments we could have been more ruthless in
the box but I wanted to support West Ham on the back foot a little bit more. I felt we needed
more crosses and we didn't. There were moments we could have and we turned it down and kept trying
to play short. You just waste time on this pitch. You have to make West Ham defend. As soon as they
concede they have to change their game and when they're 0-0 it's comfortable for them. So
especially on this pitch. So it's something we need to when we come to this ground you have to
slightly different to the way we want to play as I'm sure West Ham do as well.
