Cheers guys! Welcome to Chess Strategy. Today we're looking at a rather unbalanced position
where white has three pawns up versus the bishop. So four pawns versus one, that means three pawns
up. Black bishop is trying to control everything here and the black king is attacking our pawn
So we can do something to win this actually as white but we have to be clever. So the question
is can you see how? Of course, by the way, our pawns are going in this direction. So can you
see how white has to play to win from here? Well you can pause the video now and see if you can
solve this on your own. When you come back I will show you the correct answer. Go ahead!
Okay, welcome back! So normally we like to start with some sort of sacrifice. Can this be it?
Well no, it's just not good enough. Black will grab this with his pawn, keep the bishop here
on this diagonal. It's very important and when we try to push our pawns it seems to gonna get
promoted at the same time and of course we are not winning this as white now. Black can grab here
with a check. This pawn will fall. Black is a queen and a bishop versus a queen versus which
we can of course probably most probably save a draw but we want to win this. So we are not
sacrificing this pawn. As we said black is attacking this pawn as still the bishop is
covering for h8. So could the solution be to move our king and protect our own pawn? Let's see what
happens. Well this is just too slow. We don't really threaten anything now. Black will do a
waiting move with his bishop and he won't do something stupid like this. Then we can sacrifice
get the bishop and of course win very easily. Instead he will put the bishop down on a1 and
now if we want to come any further we have to push the pawn here and simply again black will just
take this and we promote at the same time but black is actually a bit quicker. So he promotes
with a check and of course he can then stop our pawn and we are losing this. So we are not moving
our king to protect. Instead I think most of you have seen this. This stands out when you see it.
You have to use this pawn to sacrifice. We promote to a queen of course or we can promote to
something else. Bishop also if you want to. Either way black has to take it and now we follow up with just
forcing black king to stay up here in the corner and all of a sudden we are in control.
In full control. It doesn't matter that black has a bishop. If he moves away from this diagonal here
if he does something like this well then we're gonna push the check and this is gonna be a
checkmate in a few moves. Which means black cannot really do anything since he cannot move the king
cannot move the pawn. The bishop has to move and wherever he goes let's put it here he's losing
control over b4 and now we are just pushing here b4. Great move. Black has to take if he does something
else we will just grab here and just keep on going. So and as you see we will promote at the same time
if not if black takes here but then we know what happens we're gonna get this checkmate again
so and if he allows us to promote well this is promote with a check. It doesn't matter that
black has a queen now. Cannot do anything because this is checkmate in the next move. I can just put
his queen in between that's only use he has for it and now it's a checkmate. So I think once you
see it it's pretty obvious you have to lose one of your pawns up here in order to nail the black king
into the corner with king f7 and from there it's pure technique to win this pretty easy or white.
All right that was a quick little study here. I will bring you something harder the next time I
let's I'll see what I have in store for you. See you then. Bye-bye.
