I headed into Rojales after a period of heavy rain and thunderstorms to see what opportunities for urban photography the post storm conditions would create. Higher water levels in the river, puddles and some still quite dramatic looking cloudy skies led to a mix of high contrast black and white photography with a few brightly coloured shots as well

I've just parked the car up on the outskirts of the town of
Rojales and I'm going to walk in along by the side of the river.
We've had a load of rain over the last few days, in particular yesterday,
big storm came through, really heavy rain,
thunder, lightning, so I've decided to come into Rojales today
and just see what opportunities that rain and potentially increased
water flow in the river might have opened up around the town.
I don't know, it'll be interesting to see. I hope you'll enjoy the video, if you do

I'm pretty sure the river level is higher than it has been the last time
I've been here, but that would be expected I guess.
That certainly might open up some possibilities.
This bridge is the symbol of the town, it's what appears on all of the
paperwork, tourist information, all that kind of thing.
It's a nice bit of architecture and there's some nice clouds
up there behind it, still very cloudy, still a possibility of some rain.
12-100mm lens, doesn't need to be anything too fancy.
Try and get centered and maybe zoom in a bit.
But I'm actually thinking that vertical is going to be better
because then I can include more of the sky
without including more of the side of the frame, which is not so interesting.
I think a vertical is going to be a better idea,
get more of that sky in.
That we've had certainly had an effect. The weir
on this side of the bridge last time I was here was mostly
dry with just a little bit of water coming down, but now
the whole thing is covered with running water, the water level on the river on
this side of it's much much higher. So I think we'll do a shot from this
side. I quite like the idea of doing a
slightly longer exposure, a quarter of a second, half a second,
to create some movement and texture in the water.
So I'll use the Live ND for that.
So I've got Live ND on at six stops, half a second exposure. I think that
looks quite nice. I'm kind of thinking black and white is
probably still going to be the way to go with these, but
I'm wondering whether to try a full second exposure,
turn the Live ND to maximum, seven stops, one second.
I've got to wait for some people and traffic to move.
I'm going to try a slightly different composition,
move this way a bit. I'm coming down to another
one of the metal foot bridges. I don't know if you can actually see the main
bridge from here, but I'm going to go and have a look.
I think I'm going to pop the wide angle lens on the 8-25,
see if I can get an interesting shot here. It won't include the moving water,
but there's some quite nice still water as it comes out from under the bridge.
Creating some interesting reflections. So 8-25 lens on, let's see what we can do.
Decorations up here. I'm guessing there might have been something to do with a
fiesta. And up here we have the church. I'm always interested in churches, just
from a kind of architectural standpoint. They sometimes make very interesting
images. It depends what they're like and whether
you can get a decent angle on them. This one looks like it's got a dome
around the back, but I'm not sure if you can get to a
viewpoint of it. I'm always a sucker for a puddle.
You've got an interesting building and I'm thinking if I get right down low
into this puddle here, I might be able to get a shot
of the church reflected in the puddle. Of course now typically there's a guy
just walked in reading a sign there, so I'll have to
wait for him to move. Around this angle I can just about
see the dome over the back. I'm going to go around the other side in a minute, but
I'm going to do a shot from here first I think.
Quite nice cloud as well. I don't think it would work so well without the cloud.
Yeah, nice vertical shot I think. Cloud really adds something to the scene.
Let's go around the other side and see if we can get another angle.
Decoration here with all the flowers. As I thought,
around the back here of the church there's just no view. It's all
built in. I can't get a decent angle on the dome.
I'm really thinking I want to do something with these decorations
and the church in the background. If I move too far back
the decorations, like they do now, overlap the church.
So I've got to move a bit further forward and see if I can do something.
So about there seems to work. Shame there's a car in there. See if we
can do it without the car. Not as interesting
as I was hoping, but it's okay.
Maybe play around with a couple of shots with the decorations. There's a lamp up
there which is quite nice.
Might be quite interesting.
The bridge again. It's probably going to be
towards the end of the shoot now. I'm going to start thinking about heading
back. But I thought I'd do another shot from
this side of the bridge, but close in rather than further away.
Using the wide angle lens and again taking advantage of this
quite nice cloud that we've got up here because it really does add to the image.
Particularly using a vertical composition.
I need to move back a little bit. I want to get the reflections in and some nice
cloud as well. Cloud really does add something to it.
I do like these trees. Such lovely shape to them.
Cut into a ring up at the top. I've never yet found
a good way to really photograph them to make them look interesting.
Just heading back to the car and I'm on this outskirts of the town
and the river is running through here and there's a whole section with all of
this grass growing up through it and where that's breaking up the water
it's creating some sections with a little bit of reflection
and what it's reflecting is that really nice cloudy sky
and I think maybe a wide angle shot putting the horizon if you like across
the middle of the frame. It's all houses and in the background
it's quite industrial but I think just the clouds and the river
make a nice symmetry. So worth having a go at.
8mm lens or 8-25mm lens at 8mm. I'm just going to lean out a
little bit to clear this wall here. Horizon on the centre line.
Exposure's good. That'll do. Right I think that's going to do me for today.
It's been a busy couple of weeks with various things going on
but I'm glad that I managed to get a little bit of time this afternoon to
come out after the rains. I did toy with the idea of coming out
during the rain yesterday but it was really really heavy rain
and it just wouldn't have been sensible. But now
I'm going to go home and probably be busy with some other stuff.
