Oh here comes, oh yeah, that's a big one. Two in the net just like that. A couple of nice ones too.
New year, new kayak. Let's unbox this thing. Well there you have it. This is my newest kayak.
So this is the newest kayak to come out from Old Town. If you follow the channel,
I have, actually this is my third Old Town kayak. I have the Autopilot Old Town
Horseman Autopilot. That was the first one I ever had. And then I got the Old Town's Big Water
EPDL drive. So that one's the one with the electric pedal assist. Kind of like an e-bike. And
now I have this one, which is a little bit of a combination of the two. It has the pedal drive,
which you see here. Not the EPDL, so this is all manual. But it also has the connection right here.
That's where I'm going to hook up the trolling motor. I'm super excited to get this thing on
the water, but first let's get the trolling motor on there and show you what it looks like fully
rigged up. Slight change of plans. I was planning to get this all installed. I'm out here in some
random parking lot, but then I realized that it's a little more complicated than I originally
thought it was going to be. So I think I'm going to actually just take this home and do it
at home. I need a few tools that I don't have out here. It even says you should have a second
person to help you install it, which I definitely don't have here. And I probably won't have when
I do this at home, but at least I'll have the screwdriver and all the other stuff. But anyway,
first view of the kayak. I'll have everything installed once I take it out to the water
and I'll see you there. Let's go catch some fish. All right, so there it is,
fully rigged up with all my gear. It did take a little more effort than I thought it would take,
but here's the motor. It's mounted to the bow here with this little plate that comes off. So
technically you can take this off, but anyways, that's where it sits. And then I also had to
put in the outlet for the battery. And so I was thinking, since there's so much weight in the
front with that motor up there, probably best to put the battery as far back as possible,
just even out the weight distribution. So I put this little outlet right here, ran it through the
hull of the kayak up to the front. And this is the same outlet that I use on my other autopilot
kayak. So I can interchange this battery pack for this kayak and my other kayaks, thought that would
make things easier. But yeah, it's all rigged up. Now we got to take it out on the water.
Let's see. Everything is controlled by this remote right here. Right, left. You can see the
motors turning there. Faster, slower. I'm kind of interested to see how fast this thing goes.
So let's, right off the bat, let's just kick it into max speed. About three and a half. I think
maybe if I had the pedals up, might actually go a little faster. So probably a little bit
slightly faster than my other autopilot, but not quite as fast, at least not without any manpower
as my big water, which is kind of what I expected. But yeah, let me get everything set up,
start fishing, and I'll tell you a little bit more about the kayak. I'm going to start off
with one of my all-time favorites. That's a Rapala. I'm not sure exactly what size,
but Fire Tiger jointed Rapala. One of my all-time favorites. I think it works well at lower speeds
or some of the other plugs that I have. You got to go a little bit faster.
I didn't put any rod holders on the kayak. I wanted to kind of just fish it just almost as
bare bones as I can. I know I put some stuff on here, but like a fish finder, but I wanted to
see how fast I was going. So that's why I did that. But anyway, we'll just fish this in the
holder right here. Not as great because I like to watch the rods right out here to see how they're
working, see if I get any bites or anything. But you'll have to watch it for them. This is
another one of my favorites. This is the Ozuri plug. I apologize, I forgot the name of this one
as well. But yeah, I'll find a link and put it in the description. Another one of my all-time
favorites for trolling these stock trout lakes. Make sure our drags are good. Yep, they look good.
All right, we're fishing. It's been a while since I used this one. One just jumped right here.
All right, there should be plenty of fish out here. Just a matter of time. And just being on
the kayak for like five minutes already on the water, I can already see several differences from
my previous kayak. So I'll kind of go through those as the day progresses, but see if we can
first hook up on a fish and get first blood on the kayak. Right on cue. Not even sure this is a trout.
All right, well, first fish on the kayak. It's good to start somewhere, but that is a really
small one. And there he just went. Quick release on that one. Hopefully we'll find some bigger trout
today, but there's a start. So I'm noticing a lot of the changes they made to this kayak are right
in the front kind of footwell here where you normally have your feet resting. And there's a
lot more space right here. On my other kayak, this kind of side well kind of comes out a little
bit farther, so you only have this much space. But on this one, this side well is a lot skinnier.
And you can see it's got this rail mount on the side there. It is definitely skinnier than the
last one, so I'm not sure if it's going to have any problems with holding. I put a lot of stress
on this side rail when I troll for halibut or salmon or whatever. I have a lot of weight resting
on that, so hopefully that holds up. We'll have to find out once we take it out into the ocean.
But I do notice that this rail mount is a lot longer on this one, so what that means is I can
put more stuff on there and I can adjust it a little bit more, move more forward, more back.
Right now I just have the fish finder, but normally I have rod holders on there as well.
And then also they added that little, those little tubes right there. So those are for
rod storage. So we can slide the tip of your rod right in there. Literally tying up a couple
of new leaders to try and switch out my stuff because I haven't had a bite for a while, probably
like an hour or so. Right when I did that, I just got a bite. We're switching it up a little bit.
I'll show you what I'm using at the end, but it's my super secret stealthy fishing. We're gonna troll
really slow and hopefully entice these fish to bite. Even though I didn't catch, well I did catch
one on a lure. Got a couple bites, but I did kind of get a lay of the land. I trolled the whole lake
probably around a couple, at least two or three times. And I got a couple of bites in this little
pocket right here. So even if I didn't catch any on the lure, they did help me to try and, you know,
narrow down the spots where these fish are hanging out, hopefully. So I got one in here.
I'm gonna put one in on the other side and then we're back in business. Got him. I think this is
the ticket. Wanted to get him on the lures, but unfortunately that wasn't working. So I had to
switch it up and this is what works for me. I don't think this setup has ever failed me. As long
as there's fish around, at least for the stock trout at least, they're gonna eat this. This one
definitely, not a huge one, but it's definitely bigger than the first one that we got. And I
actually had one other bite maybe five, ten minutes ago on the same rod right here. That one didn't
stick, but this one I got. Oh, it's not bad. It is not bad. You can probably hear the drag going.
We're using really light line. Probably don't need to use this light of line.
The water's not super clear here, but I just like to, I think it's more fun that way.
Oh no. Wish it reeled a little bit more. All right, now let's get him. Got him. All right,
that's number one. Well, I guess number two, but we're gonna keep this one. So number one on the
string. Pretty good looking stock trout. Probably two pounds, two or three pounds, something like
that. I don't know exactly, but yeah, good looking stock trout. A lot of times they have really beat
up tails. This one's actually pretty good, all things considered. But yeah, we'll just toss him
over here and get back to trolling. I think we found, figured it out. Didn't bit. Got him. That
one definitely bit more than once. I saw him hit the first time. Oh, double. Oh my god, I got a
double. Okay. Feels like it's a little better. Double. Definitely figured it out right here.
You know, I trolled for about two to three hours maybe with only, you know, very minimal action.
And then now that we got this figured out, that's four bites now in about 15 minutes.
And I got two on right now at the same time. Both of these seem like they're decent fish.
Yeah, I got two same time. Oh, this one is acrobatic. He's not as big, but
oh, there he goes again. He was pulling hard at the beginning and then
just jumped about two feet in the air. Let's see if I can get him on this side.
This is where my net is. Oh man, super light line, so always a fun fight.
All right, two in the net. Look at that. Two in the net just like that. A couple of nice ones too.
A little bit of a mess here, but it's a good mess. All right, one hook out.
Both hooks out. I am noticing with this kayak, as I kind of lean over to the side a little bit,
I feel like it's a little bit, it's definitely still stable kayak.
Any of these autopilot or sportsmen from Old Town, they're going to be pretty stable. They're
fairly wide and yeah, just heavy duty kayaks. Definitely ocean worthy
hulls, but I don't know if it's the extra weight from the trolling motor,
you know, all up in the front or I don't know. The whole design itself is pretty similar to
the previous model. Yeah, my old one, I don't know, that one I feel like is almost unflippable.
You got to really try to flip that one to get it to flip, but yeah, I can already tell leaning to
the side here. You never want to put your head over the edge of the kayak. That's when you have
the best chance of being unstable enough to flip. So yeah, as I'm kind of reaching over the side
here, I'm definitely feeling it. You can probably see it on the GoPro. We're starting to turn a
little bit. But anyways, here's my three fish, pretty good stringer so far. Pond water. Yeah,
all pretty much the same size, all about two to three pounds-ish, something like that.
But yeah, let's get our line back in. Like right as I went to grab the other one from getting bit,
the second rod bit, like probably two fish in the same school just swimming around together.
So the limit here is five trout per day per person. So we are over halfway now.
Now that we got them figured out, I think we should be able to get a couple more. All right,
staying down, that's for sure. I haven't seen it yet. It's like right below the kayak.
You can see it on the fish finder. Oh, here it comes. Oh yeah, that's a big one.
That's a big one. Definitely the biggest one of the day. Oh my God, that one's so...
Oh man. Holy moly. Might be a 10 pounder. I guess you never really know for sure, but I
really thought that one was a big one right off the bat. I could tell it was just heavy.
It never really went on a big run, but I could just tell it wasn't coming in like the last few
were. It's been a while since I caught a big stock trout or a big trout of any kind for that
matter. So I'm not sure exactly how much this one weighs, but I think it's got to be close to 10 if
it's not over 10. I do have a scale in my truck, so I will give it a weight once they get back.
Let's take a look at the density of this one. Good reveal.
Look at the gut on that one. Big, big belly. Look at that tail. Yeah, that's a big stock trout
right there. Get the stringer now. You can see it compared to the other ones. Definitely a lot bigger.
One more for the limit. So as you can see here, we're just trolling really, really slow.
Painfully slow at times. I mean, right now it's working, so it's not as painful. But if it's not,
you know, there's not as many fish around, it could be hard to troll this slow and keep up,
keep it up for a long time. But anyway, my thought process with these stock trout is they're pretty
lazy fish. I mean, they've been basically spoon fed their whole life. And so sometimes, you know,
the plugs definitely work. I've caught them on all kinds of different plugs. But yeah, sometimes
when they're getting real lazy, I think they just don't want to swim super fast to chase down
anything. It's like your fish from the bank power weight is super useful because that's just sitting
there. Oh, one just rolled right here. Twice it rolled. Oh, I just had a bite. Oh, he's coming
back. He's coming back. He's coming back. You got it. You got it. No, he doesn't have it. Anyway,
what I was saying is, yeah, sometimes I think these fish are so lazy, they don't want to chase
after anything moving remotely fast. So this really, really slow, painful, just moving that
bait really smoothly through the water column. Gets the job done sometimes. Definitely a smaller
fish. I think we're gonna let this one go. Guess we don't have a choice now. Well, since the big
one in about an hour, I did get one little one that you saw in the meantime. But other than that,
a couple of short strikes and that's about it. I'm not sure the bite just turned off.
Maybe I just hit a little window or maybe I caught them all. I don't know. But I'm going
to give myself another 20 minutes to get my fifth and final fish. If I don't get it in 20 minutes,
then I'm going to head out of here. I'm going to see if he comes off easily. I'll let him go. If
not, then we'll keep him. All right. 15 minutes. See if we can get one more. There's one. All
right. I think this is the go home fish. It's funny. On this one, I saw the slightest little
tap. It almost kind of looked like something just like swiped at the tail of the worm. I don't know
if that's what happened, but that's what it looked like to me. I mean, he doesn't tingle up with this
line. Oh, I don't know if you saw that. That's probably blocking the view, but another jumper.
It's weird how some of them feel like they fight harder than other ones. You would think they would
all, at least the ones that are the same size, they'd all fight the same, but definitely not
the case today. Even the really big one didn't fight as much as this one's fighting. There was
that one other one earlier that also fought pretty good. Oh my God. He does not want to come in.
Also, side note, shout out to Promar. This net works great. Oh, it just came off.
Oh, it just came off right there. Oh, miss all that jumping. You deserved it. Didn't end up
getting that final limit fish. I mean, I did catch plenty of fish. I could have had a limit,
but we kept four really nice ones. A couple that released themselves on both sides and a couple
short strikes as well. So definitely action packed day. And I can't say enough about this
kayak. One thing I do want to check though, is since I did drill some holes, once I get back
to shore, oh my God, one just rolled right here. I'm going to have to troll through here a little
bit more. But anyways, once I get back to shore, I do want to check the hull to see if any water
got in. Because if there's no water, there definitely wasn't any water when I got here.
It's a brand new kayak. So any water that's inside there will have been leaked from somewhere
outside. So the video is not quite over. I'm going to weigh that fish and I'm going to check
the hull once I get back shore. And I'm also going to troll kind of the long way. The ramp
is over here, but I just saw a fish roll right here. So I'm going to kind of go the long way and
you know, one last chance at the fifth fish. Water in here? No. Still as dry as it was before.
That's great news. Shout out to Old Town for sending me this kayak. You'll definitely be
seeing it in future videos. Everything here is saltwater grade. The motor, the kayak itself,
everything. So I'll definitely be taking it out in the ocean, but this was a good
test run out in the freshwater. Everything worked well. And I weighed that big fish on another guy's
scale when I was coming in and it was only eight and a half pounds. So not quite 10, but yeah,
the biggest trout I've caught in a while. I'll leave some links to the baits and stuff in the
description. Oh yeah, and this was the bait I was using to catch most of the fish. The first fish
got it on a plug, but everything else came on these little, I think they're Berkeley Powerworms,
something like that. I'll leave a link down in the description, but yeah,
one of my favorites for trolling. Thank you for watching. We'll see you on the next one.
