Most car buyers think bringing cash or their own financing means they can skip the finance office.
That’s not how it works.
In this video, we break down exactly why nearly every deal still goes through finance… and more importantly, how dealers use that stage to make the most money off buyers.
You’ll learn:
Why the finance office is REQUIRED in most deals What really happens behind the scenes The biggest mistakes buyers make in those final minutes How to stay in control and protect your Out-The-Door price
Because the most dangerous part of the deal isn’t walking into the finance office… It’s walking in unprepared.

Can you skip the finance office if you bring your own bank pre-approval?
Hi, I'm Kevin Hunter here, the Homework Guy. Today we're answering a question we get asked
constantly from our viewers. Is there a way we can get around going into the finance office?
Can talking to the shark be avoided entirely? The answer to that is yes, it's actually possible,
but definitely not a typical business practice. If you already have financing from your own bank
or credit union, can you skip the dealer finance office completely? The amazing Elizabeth comes
to join me now to dig a little bit further into this situation. Let me start by translating that
question. Can you avoid the warranties, the gap insurance pitch, the protection packages,
the sign here, here, and here marathon of sales EVS? Short answer, in most cases, probably not.
The long answer, you absolutely can still control the structure of your deal. And yes, in some cases,
the finance office can be skipped. Every once in a while, we make that happen in our hassle-free
car bank service. We've even had vehicles delivered right to the buyer's house, and they signed for
the car on their dining room table. The buyer didn't have to go to the dealership at all. How's
that for service? Of course, this is a safer move on a brand new car than it is on a used one.
Why, in most cases, you still go to the F&I office. Even if you walk in with a check from
your credit union, the dealership still routes you through the finance insurance office.
Why? Because F&I handles several things like the retail installment paperwork, title and
registration processing, compliance disclosures, funding verification with your lender. They are
the dealer's legal clearinghouse of the transaction. They are a necessary part of transferring the
vehicle to you as the new owner. In other words, it's not just about selling you extra warranties.
It's about processing contracts legally and correctly, which they do sometimes. So now,
you usually can't just shake hands with the salesperson and drive off into the sunset,
but that would be nice, wouldn't it? But as I've mentioned earlier, we have made that happen for
our clients in our car buying service. Now here's where things go wrong and where buyers can lose
control. You might say, I have my own financing from my own bank. And suddenly the finance
manager says, great, what monthly payment are you trying to stay under? That's a red flag. Don't
answer that question. You're not here to negotiate payments, so don't get sucked into that conversation.
You're here to finalize an agreed written out the door price you got from your dealership contact
before you visited the dealer. You were prepared before you arrived. And sometimes they'll say,
if you finance with us, we can lower the car's price. Maybe they can, and maybe they won't,
even if they could. But what that really means is this. We can make more money on the interest rate
if you finance with us. That's called rate reserve. And it's certainly legal to mark up the interest
rate, but you should know what's happening when they say things like this. All right,
can you just say no? Can you refuse back-end products you don't want? Yes, absolutely.
Especially if you already had them out of your written deal before you showed up at the dealership.
Can you decline extended warranties, gap insurance, tire packages, ceramic coating,
nitrogen-filled tires, VIN etching? Yes, to all of this kind of stuff, it typically falls
under the tying the sale described by the FTC as illegal sales pressure. Can you skip
signing compliance documents? No. And honestly, all of this is why a lot of people just don't
want to deal with the dealer process anymore. When facing a high pressure pitch for added
products, you can absolutely say, I'm not purchasing any optional products today,
and then sit quietly, letting them say the next thing or make the next move.
Silence is powerful in the finance office, very powerful. A wise finance officer won't
try to push the envelope. So smart strategy if you bring your own financing, here's the correct
structure to have in place. Number one, negotiate your out-the-door price first from the comfort of
home. Don't forget to do that. Number two, lock that number in writing, have them text it or email
it to you so you have it in your hand when you come in. Then disclose your outside financing
after you get to the dealership. Number four, give them the opportunity to beat your rate in writing.
And if they beat it, great. If they don't, well then stick with your own lender.
And here's something equally important. Sometimes dealer financing incentives are tied to
manufacture rebates. So occasionally financing through them actually does make sense. But again,
compare full structure, not just a monthly payment. Hi, Kevin Hunter here. Now listen,
some of you actually enjoy the dealer process. Some of you enjoy navigating all the dealer stuff
we teach our audience about. If you're a do-it-yourselfer, we have plenty of free tools
for you. And that's always been totally cool with us. But some of you others definitely don't like
it at all. In fact, you hate going through the dealer sales process. If you'd rather not manage
this process alone, our car coaching team handles new and used car deals nationwide for our viewers.
New vehicles, used vehicles, leases, factory orders, and trade-ins. We get you written out
the door prices for everything. We do all the negotiations so you don't have to battle dealers
by yourself. There's always documentation oversight. And you do have a quarterback to
consult with when you go into finance because we never leave anyone on their own. Either your coach
stands by for you or I do. Bottom line, we do all the work so you don't have to. And honestly,
most people who use the service tell us the same thing. They wish they had done it sooner.
And yes, the intake call for the service is done directly by yours truly, me. If that sounds like
the kind of car buying you'd prefer, consider using our hassle-free car buying service.

All right, let's get back to the show. Here's the psychology of F&I. The finance office is
designed to feel official. They want you to think of it like an appointment with your own banker,
but this definitely is not a banker sitting across from you. It's a different room,
different person, different tone. That's intentional. It creates a psychological
second negotiation. And many buyers relax at that point because they think the deal is done.
I already have everything negotiated. But the profit center often starts right here in finance.
So the bottom line, you usually cannot skip the finance department entirely, but you can control
what you purchase, what you sign, whether you switch financing, whether you allow numbers to
change. And never forget, documentation beats conversation. If the out-the-door changes in
that office, stop everything immediately. So no, you can't typically skip the finance
office, but you absolutely can walk in prepared, structured, and protected.
And if you don't want to quarterback that process alone, that's what our car buying
service team does nationwide. We structure the deal, we manage the negotiation, and we guide
you all the way through the finance office. You remain the decision maker, we eliminate the
headaches. Drop your questions below. And if you want more content like this, subscribe because
