Welcome back. Desperate for dollars. New York governor Kathy Hochul now begging wealthy residents
to come back to the liberal state after telling Republicans to get out of town just four years
ago. Watch this. Just jump on a bus and head down to Florida where you belong, okay? Get out of town.
Get out of town. I need people who are high net worth to support the generous social programs
that we want to have in our state, right? Now there are some patriotic millionaires who stepped
up. Okay, cut me the checks. I mean just if you want to be supportive but maybe the first step
should be go down to Palm Beach and see who you can bring back home because our tax base has been
eroded. Wow that'll be a hard sell for top earners as New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani pushes a
nine and a half percent property tax increase on residents to fill the city's more than
five billion dollar deficit hole. Joining me now is New York Congresswoman Elise Stefano.
Congressman, great to see you. Thank you so much for being here. Great to be with you, Maria. Well
the funny thing is everything's on tape so we know what Kathy Hochul said initially and now we know
she's begging everybody to come back. That's right and the reason why people have left New York in
such a historic number is highest taxes, highest insurance costs, highest health care costs,
most regulatory burden for small businesses. So there has been a mass exodus. We've lost a
congressional seat in redistricting as a result of this. So people are fleeing the failed policies
of single-party democrat socialist rule in New York and Kathy Hochul owns that. It's why she's
the worst governor in America and now you have a mayor of New York City who is proposing even
higher taxes that are only going to fuel people leaving New York. But it's really shocking to
watch that clip to hear her tell people to leave and begging them for them to come back. It really
is. Do you think after if she wins this race that she'll go back and just agree with Zora and
Mamdani and everything? She's just telling us that she's against stuff and then after the election
she just goes back to who we know she is? Well look at the president. She did this with congestion
pricing when she said she's not going to increase congestion pricing. As soon as the election was
over she went ahead and raised those and that is a tax on commuters. It's a tax on workers.
I fear and my concern is she's going to do that on energy issues where she is kicking the can down
the road on this natural gas ban. She has every intention of implementing that after the election
and every intention of raising taxes. Meanwhile you look at states like Florida where you continue
to see businesses population moving there because of the very friendly economic climate. So this is
what single party rule leads to. The New York Post calling out socialist mayor Zoran Mamdani
for his new budget proposal writing quote Mamdani hasn't offered any fresh thoughts since dropping a
quote-unquote helpful list of taxes that the legislature or city council could increase to
gin up more cash for him to spend. He'd rather tax the rich but is willing to tax everyone whatever
it takes. Joining me now to break this all down is Democratic strategist Melissa DeRosa. Melissa
the best part about this article in the Post is this juxtaposition. You have the progressive
controller progressive telling the socialist mayor hey bro you're spending way too much money. So
looking ahead and broadening this out to the entire country. Is this the kind of Democratic
leadership coming to a city or state near you with the midterms literally right around the corner?
Good morning and thank you for having me. Well look he perfectly is he clearly is the perfect
foil for every Republican around the country. And just to put this budget into context
10 years ago in Mayor Bloomberg's last year as mayor the size of the New York City budget was
70 billion dollars. What Zoran is proposing is 128 billion dollar budget which means the budget
has grown almost 50 percent in the length of 10 years and it's larger than the entire state of
Florida which has I believe around 30 million people in New York City has eight and a half
million people. So it certainly does embody all of the worst stereotypes about Democrats. Tax and
spend. Reckless. Lighting your money on fire. Feeling resentful towards the government that
doesn't give back to you. And on top of it Zoran who ran on tax the rich tax the rich tax the rich
is now to the point of your lead in saying tax literally everyone soup to nuts. And so it's a
very bad situation here in New York. It begs the question for me who is getting this money in
reality because we know that you always hear all the poor people are going to get them. They never
end up getting the money. The working class never ends up getting the money. The middle class never
ends up getting money. So who's making money off of that increase that you just highlighted. Well
look a lot of it is unions right. Such a large percentage of spending in New York City goes
towards education. And in New York City we spend more per pupil heads and shoulders above the rest
of the country. And yet our results consistently are in the middle of the pack. And so a lot of
this is frankly wrought within the system within the pension system within all of the perks that
that the unions are doling out to their members and that politicians sort of buy in exchange for
their endorsements. And then you don't see the results. And so in a few short months since
Zoran has been in office we've seen garbage collection get worse. We've seen a snowstorm
that resulted in night between 19 and 26 deaths depending on how you're counting them that were
totally avoidable. It was based on liberal policy of people who are allowed to die on the streets.
And now you're seeing a situation where not one not two not three but four national credit rating
agencies are giving warnings of a bond downgrade because of the budget the budget math that he is
playing. And the controller put it pretty perfectly when he was on television over the weekend. He
said quite simply we are spending more than we are taking in. The math is not mapping.
Every other family in America sits around the table and makes tough decisions except the New
York City government. And so it'll be an interesting ride to see where this goes.
But to your point he's no longer talking about tax the rich. He's saying property taxes which
affects everyone who is a team the dream of homeownership to the tune of nine and a half
percent which is outrageous. He's talking about the estate tax which means and not just the estate
tax at five million dollars lowering that threshold to 750. That's insane. That's the
value of someone's home. It's crazy and cutting it in half 50 percent. So the idea that you could
leave your family anything when you die is out the window. It's completely out the window. It's just
it's a it's a mess. Melissa we got to leave it there because we're running up against Fox and
now the question becomes does Albany cave to Zora Mamdani. We'll have you back because I know you
know a little something about Albany. Melissa thank you. If you enjoy this content please
