asy German/ Easy Languages is an international video project aiming at supporting people worldwide to learn languages through authentic street interviews and expose the street culture of participating partner countries abroad. Episodes are produced in local languages and contain subtitles in both the original language as well as in English.
Hello, dear viewers of Easy German. We were very, very happy about your many comments last time.
That naturally motivates us tremendously to go out again today and shoot a new episode.
Today's episode is a video response to the previous episode of Easy Russian.
In fact, Anja asked people in St. Petersburg which language they were learning and why.
Now let's see what people in Berlin have to say about it. Let's go!
Hello, we would really love to ask you something.
Yes, absolutely.
Yes, what's up?
Which languages are you learning or would you absolutely like to learn?
Swedish
Why?
I once had a roommate, a Swedish woman, and I was in Sweden, in Stockholm, and I really wanted to learn Swedish.
And? Did you do it?
I can do it a little, but only very, very little.
We would like to know which languages you are learning and why.
Me? English at the moment.
Yes? And why?
Because I have to do it professionally.
What do you do for a living?
I am a police officer.
Also, I occasionally listen to French radio because I have a closer connection to the language, which I find very beautiful, and I'd also like to speak it regularly again.
I once started learning Finnish because my then-girlfriend spoke Finnish, but it eventually came to a halt.
I'd also like to be able to speak Arabic and Turkish, and Vietnamese too, so I can better understand the people here, especially in Berlin.
but I can't really bring myself to tackle it in that way, but I'd also like to do it, yes.
Also, I find languages super important.
And what do you want to learn?
I would like to learn Spanish.
Why?
Yes, it's a widely spoken language, and I find it a beautiful language simply.
The languages I am learning, I can at most say I have learned.
Of course, first of all, the native language, as it were, and then French, English, and Spanish at school.
Today I can still understand quite a bit of English, and I also understand a little French.
Spanish has unfortunately been lost.
And do you often go to France to refresh your knowledge?
No, but to English-speaking countries.
And there, when dealing with business in English, English is naturally required.
And in general, you can get by quite well with English while on vacation.
I learned English and Latin at school, and Italian only for the sake of its beautiful sound.
Do you still speak Italian?
I can order food, I can say the bill is incorrect, and that's enough for survival, English and French.
A bit of Italian.
Do you still speak that?
English occasionally, French rather not, and Italian neither.
What is the most challenging aspect of learning English?
Actually, the motivation to keep doing it over and over.
May I ask something?
But my German is not that good.
It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter. We'd like to know which languages you're learning?
German languages.
And why?
I am Russian and I live in Berlin.
Yes, Konno, you're visiting us in Berlin right now. Where are you from?
I come from Bonn, just today.
And originally?
From the beautiful Swabia region.
I'll say a sentence in High German, and then you say the same thing.
We're going to eat something later.
Have you already picked the fruit from the trees today?
Have you already picked the fruit from the trees today?
What are you doing here?
I am an artist.
And what kind of artist?
Do you know my picture of the Berlin Wall?
Brother Kuss, that's mine.
We have just met a famous artist.
I'm not so famous, but Brother Kuss is very famous.
What languages do you speak?
Both.
Hebrew and English.
And a little bit of German.
Since when have you been in Berlin?
2010
You're still learning German?
Yes, I'm taking three courses, but my life is full of work.
This is a major problem.
What are you doing?
I am learning German.
Artist.
Also artists.
Which languages do you learn then?
I learned French at school.
Latin, English, and a bit of Arabic during my studies.
But I can't do anything.
You can't do anything at all?
I can't take it anymore.
At school, I learn English and French.
I had the chance to still do Latin.
But it was too complicated for me.
And during the Easter holidays, I'm also learning Swahili.
At least a few fragments,
so that I can communicate a little bit
on an exchange to Zanzibar.
Where do you use English in everyday life?
Well, right here on the street.
So some people can't speak German at all.
The tourists.
This is just a tourist hotspot here.
And if you now any language,
when you wake up tomorrow morning
and you could suddenly become fluent, what would that be?
Swedish
Why?
I have a fairly close connection to Ikea.
Russian, perhaps.
But something completely different I find difficult.
Why Russian?
That's great.
Would you then travel to Russia?
Maybe, yes.
Difficult, difficult, difficult.
Japanese
Why?
Because Japanese sounds very interesting to me
and my girlfriend from our family
I would like to learn Japanese gladly
And I find the syllables are simply very interesting.
If you could suddenly speak a language overnight,
What would that be?
Either Spanish or French, then fluent.
Probably French.
And why?
Because it sounds so beautiful.
Esperanto
Really?
Yes.
Why?
So few people speak.
Yes, more and more.
Yes?
What do you like about it?
That it is a conservative language.
This is supposedly relatively easy to learn.
I haven't done it yet.
It has a bit of IT humor.
It is universal.
Yes, that's correct.
Yes, dear viewers, that was it.
It's really cold, but we've got all the interviews done.
Only one thing I still don't know.
If you could suddenly speak a language overnight,
What would that be?
I think that would be Arabic.
And why?
Because one is quite in demand there with
And I also believe I can get a pretty good job.
Also quite impressive from a career perspective.
Then I would suggest...
Not only professionally,
because one simply makes progress in certain parts of the world,
because English might not help much here.
But that might also be a prejudice.
Then I'd suggest you just take a look at Easy Arabic.
We also offer this with a very friendly team from Egypt.
And for you, dear viewers, we have one more question,
because we would like to know from you,
if you could suddenly speak a language perfectly overnight,
What language would that be and why?
The most creative answer will receive a special prize from us.
We are not saying what it is yet.
Therefore, make an effort.
Thank you for watching
And I hope to see you next week at Easy German.
Hello!
