What's up? Rupert here from Grounded Permaculture Action Party coming to you from the beautiful
Numbumbar Valley and today I want to take you on a little walk around the place
and show you a bunch of different foods that grow like weeds. Now if you're in subtropical
east coast Australia you definitely want to get this stuff in your garden because they proliferate
like weeds with very little maintenance. Let's go. All right check this out this is the first
thing we found on our walk today passion fruit. This bush here planted itself this vine I should
say planted itself it grows like a weed zero care and maintenance and all we have to do is just come
back and harvest the fruit. The cool thing about passion fruit now passion fruit is a vine so it
likes to grow up stuff and this vine has just naturally found itself in these macarangas and
other early succession trees that are sitting under this brush box. Perfect for fence lines
taking over hedges that you don't really want anymore. You could set up a trellis if you really
wanted to but passion fruit is definitely one of those ones you want in your garden.
We just found the next one ice cream bean. Now depending who you ask some people actually even
classify this as a invasive pest invasive weed. Very easy to grow from seed usually there's a lot
of seedlings growing under these you can see one up here look come have a look so this is all grown
from seed it's just falling on the ground and naturally coming up by itself so if you can get
your hands on some of this seed and kind of like the name suggests it just tastes like ice cream
so the seed right there straight in the ground yeah it tastes like ice cream. Very prolific tree
excellent producer of biomass and the kids love it. Ice cream bean while I'm munching on this ice
cream bean a little side note using it for biomass you can see that the ice cream bean is cranked up
in this system producing a lot of canopy but actually what we're aiming for is the jackfruit
and so it's probably just about time to cut all of this ice cream bean back and down to feed this
jackfruit which has already got a lot of banana already been fed a lot of banana and then that's
just going to give space for the jackfruit to really express itself. All right I've just found
the next fruit that grows like a weed and it's not what you would think pumpkins. Pumpkins are
technically a fruit because they are pollinated by flowers and produce seeds we're just a little
bit early in the season though it's a harvest you can see here we've got pumpkin coming on
from the flower there's the flower and then it turns into the fruit none quite ready yet
but this system was planted in October four months ago five months ago maybe and you can see
that it's really growing like a weed excellent fruit that grows like a weed for a subtropical
garden just find some seeds stick them in a pile of compost and let it take over. All right here's
another one another fruit that grows like a weed in the subtropical climates and you can harvest
now late summer we've got grapes now we're pretty much at the end of the harvest season for grapes
these ones oh wow that's good when they get right quite purple are still quite sweet
but this one we've got quite a few of them on the land they get no care love or attention
and every year they just keep producing fruit. All right the next fruit I want to show you that
grows like a weed is the cherry guava makes an excellent edible hedge now these were planted
out at least 10 years ago but once they get established they're very prolific you can see
they're all on the ground here and not that one that's a camphor but here here here all through
here look at this little cluster they're all coming up from seed very very prolific plant
very tasty this is a nice little cluster I want them red and firm but not soft because the fruit
flow gets in there lays its eggs it's not going to kill you there's a bit of a funny feeling to
eating maggots again this this whole section gets no love care or attention just keeps on growing
keeps on producing keeps on proliferating everywhere all right so the next one I want
to show you number six fruit number six is choco you can get white choco or green choco
I've I prefer the white choco it's a bit sweeter in flavor you can see this choco vine there's
probably actually a few choco vines here I planted one white choco about three years ago
and every year new waves of choco come on take over this whole area it's a vine loves to grow
and take over things it's a bit late in the season so we've they've already fruited this
is only a very small one they've dropped and they're starting to grow again come and have a
look we've got another one choco growing here over here here's a great example I'm not even
going to pull it out because it's starting to root of the choco plant like self-sprouting
it just keeps growing by itself more in here found one there's not many left because it's
so late in the season you can see it's got this big seed in the middle that's went to sprout it
didn't make it so we're going to eat it this is the green choco but again it's already already
starting to sprout and grow for the next season all right the next fruit that I want to show you
that grows like a weed is the beloved cherry tomato it's a fruit technically a fruit flowers
seeds so sweet they usually just pop up out of your compost and just grow especially in
disturbed soil anything that's kind of in that grassland stage but some cherry tomatoes love it
and they're very tasty easy to grow very prolific all right the next one I want to show you
is these bell peppers it's a perennial bell pepper it's like a capsicum if you
just work with the outer edges like this tastes like a capsicum exactly like a capsicum and it's
not very spicy but if you use any of the seed or any of this middle lining that's super hot
not super hot it's got a bit of spice to it it's not too spicy oh yeah I got the spice on that one
but look how prolific it is I just planted one stem of this from cutting maybe two years ago
and this thing just I have to keep cutting it back because it's so prolific look at this
it's actually ridiculous really good for subtropical climates where we are in the
Numbambar valley we can't really grow the capsicums that you get in the store
because it's just too wet in summer they kind of rot but these tough as nuts all right the last one
the last fruit that grows like weeds that I want to show you today is the guava not quite ready
in season yet there's a lot of varieties of guava they often grow by the roadside I think
they're even classified as a as a pest or a weed by the government and even this one here you can
see I could have waited for it to fruit if I wanted the fruit but we were just blitzing this
orchard and it was getting up near the power line so I just cut it all back you can keep it like a
very prolific great for biomass and quite tasty fruit especially when you can get like the
there's like pineapple guavas lots of different varieties that are very very prolific all right
there you have it that's nine fruits that grow like weeds in subtropical environment
if you've got a brown thumb get these in your garden right now zero effort they will be
and give you a bounty of abundance we've got passion fruit ice cream beans pumpkin which
wasn't quite ready to fruit yet grapes cherry guavas white choco which is now coming towards
the end of the season that's why I only got one the cherry tomatoes the bell peppers and the
guavas which are not quite ready yet so if I've missed any let me know drop a comment
below otherwise I'll see you in the next one
