This build started with something I hadn’t looked at in years - The Art of The Last of Us.
Coming back to it reminded me how much it had shaped the way I approach structures on my layout, especially the station area.
That was enough to finally sit down and finish the platforms. From bare surfaces to fully installed, weathered, and back in service.

This is the art of The Last of Us. I picked up this book eight years ago at a Comic-Con convention
and I used to browse through this book quite a bit and I have sort of put it by the wayside
and I have not looked at this for a number of years but definitely this had a big influence
on the way that I've approached a lot of my modeling. I found this page and it reminded me that
I built very similar bridge abutments to what was going on here. So yeah it was neat to rediscover
this book and I was looking at the cover and this reminds me of the inside of a train station
and I have been delaying working on the car barn area of my station.
So I've made a lot of these and I designed them the first time, printed everything I needed,
it didn't quite work out, redesigned them, printed them again and I've actually on my
third round and the most recent round is perfect for my needs. These were made on my FDM printer
and the design is pretty straightforward. There are two halves that you laminate together and
creates the girder work. The prototype is actually painted gray. I don't think that has enough
contrast for what I'm trying to do so I'm going to make mine look rusty and I'm going to prime
them with a flat leather brown. So all of the girders for the car barn are installed and I'm
very happy with this. This is something I've thought about for a long time and it's coming
together really nicely. Through my planning I had decided I was going to use 12 girders for the
entire length of the platform but now that I see these extended platforms coming past the girders
I think I would like at least one or two more installed which is a shame because I laser cut
the holes in these platforms and if I want to add one or two more I'm going to have to manually carve
these holes in. So I might as well just get on with it and get it done.
So adding the extra girders was totally worth it. I have been working on the plans for this for
almost years and it takes one minute to see it put together to say yeah that's not right I need
to do a little bit more and I'm happy I did and I'm also pretty happy that it was easy to fix when
I was able to install two more sets of girders no problem and I put the city back together and all
of the engines are back at the platforms and I'm realizing now that I absolutely should have
ballasted it before I put any of those girders in so I think hopefully I can pull all the girders
out and add the ballast. I get too excited sometimes.
