We are exploring deep in the Amazon Rainforest with the Waorani Tribe deep in Yasuni National Park in Ecuador - on a thrilling hunt for exotic game such as monkeys, wild boar, and anything else we can find. I'm also joined by my friend @xiaomanyc who also had a bit of a surprise...
In a world uncontacted and deep in the Amazon rainforest, I'm bringing you a view of the
Orani tribe that you've never seen before. We are discovering the real truth of life in the
Amazon rainforest. We are joining a wild hunt for anything the Orani tribe can find. We are throwing
out all the cultural biases and questioning our own beliefs by witnessing this act of survival,
something our ancestors have done since the beginning of humanity. The Orani have learned
to adapt and survive without the need of modern technology, but much of their habitat is threatened
from the outside. The Orani have learned to adapt and survive without the need of modern technology,
but much of their habitat is threatened from the outside by oil drilling and climate change,
which threatens their very existence. But first, let's take a step back. The boat's still not here.
We reached the river, but there's no boat. And we were in the jungle last night. But through the
darkness, there is a glimmer of light. We start our adventure on the search for the curare vine,
the natural poison the Orani used to hunt their prey.
So there's a process where they go to get the vine, curare vine, and then we bring it back,
and then they cure it. It goes through a big process. It's going to take us around 90 minutes.
Crazy, no? Crazy? We made it. Survived.
Get on here. So we gotta clean here.
Let's get on here. So we have the whole boat for ourselves, huh?
Going through the jungle. More jungle. Survivor. Oh my god, it's so muddy. Oh my gosh.
What is this? It is level 10 again. Dude, Nate, this is nuts. The mud pit.
Walking into the jungle. Got Ari, got Nate, got a few Orani. Where are we? Oh my gosh,
getting off the boat, the mud was insane. Thank god for these boots. Yeah.
Look at this. All right, so we're going this way.
Taking off his pants.
Oh, so there's bees up there. So we got honey. Beehive.
A beehive, yeah. My favorite.
No, we need to poo. Super dense forest here.
Yep, yesterday I got stuck in many vines.
This guy's too fast. He's like hiking through the jungle. Cutting. Oh my god, so deep. The deeper
we go, the thicker the bush. We're going through like tiny little holes here and there. He keeps
cutting with the machete. All this to get some venom. I guess we need it, right? It's the only
way for them to get any prey. Wow, you found it, right? This is the vine of the curare. Wow,
you got the whole thing. Yeah, it's more like a massive branch, but it's not.
Beauty. Trying curare poison in the jungle, right?
Let's not eat that. Where is it? We're trying deadly jungle poison. Look right there.
Be careful. Yeah, man. It's numbing. It's numbing. Okay, I'll try this.
No, it's not good, man. It's super bitter. It's numbing, right? It's numbing. You can see how
it numbs an animal. It's like an anesthetic.
This is like the unconcentrated version, and then they need to boil it down. It's like a really
concentrated solution that can paralyze. It's like a thick tar, what it looks like. So we'll
see that later, but wow, my tongue is numb, right? It's almost like the Szechuan pepper,
a little bit. Very similar. That's over there, curare.
I'll get some. It's carrying some poison. No big deal. Yeah. Yeah? All right, let's go.
You just drop it there, bro. Man, my lips still.
Next step in the process after he found the curare is he has to shave off all the bark
into this leaf. He's going to do all this. It's going to take him roughly half an hour. After
that, he's going to put lukewarm water and let it all filter into a big bucket. From there,
it's going to be put onto a frying pan, and then there it's going to thicken,
darken, and then that's where we get the venom. The containers, the poison bark,
everything is just from. Yeah, so we just finished scraping off all the bark,
and now he's going to roll it up in this leaf. You know, it's funny because we're here,
we don't like understand the moment, but this is truly exotic, unique. What are we doing here,
right? It's a big blunt. Well, except if you smoke that, you'll definitely die. No, no,
you're done. Guaranteed dead. I mean, if you roll this up, smoke it like a joint, you die.
Amazon marijuana. This is it. A little missile. It's like a giant venomous blunt.
Look at this massive cigar right here. Huge. I don't think even Volta could take that one. No,
this is too much. Yeah. Let's go. Okay.
It's like a big, big knot.
Right, it's like slimy. Love it.
Oh, a little bit bitter though. A little bitter. I like it. Not enough meat though.
Almost nothing. Yeah.
Teeth fruit. I like it. I feel like this is one of those fruits that
has to evolve for like 3,000 years to be domesticated, and then it'd be really good,
you know? Garlic. Very strong. Jungle garlic? Jungle garlic, yeah. Yeah, jungle garlic.
For fever, for your arteries. It's good. Yeah, that looks like a plastic little siphon,
but it's actually a mushroom. I'm sure that's dangerous. Marta's too kind. She's like,
oh, you're weak. And look, she grabbed it.
One-handed. And this one's chopping down her palm tree. Crazy.
Like a basket. Oh, so they're gonna make a basket out of this palm tree.
Oh, nice. So they're gonna chop it up. Look, look, look, look. Boom.
Her whole life, you know, she's been playing with a machete, just chopping things down.
Yeah, as you can see, she has a newborn tribe since birth already in the jungle. They're
accustomed to it. They see animals. Yeah, she can be two hours here in the jungle, no problem.
Oh, yeah? She's gonna show me how to make the basket. She's a teacher.
Yeah, same. This basket's gonna be very, very strong. It can carry, like,
so let's say, like, a kilo or more. Oh, my gosh, look at this.
She's a master. I know people joke about, like, underwater basket weaving in college schools,
but, like, definitely a part of this. Like, that's pretty impressive.
She says she's gonna carry me in her basket. She's gonna take me somewhere.
Dude, it's a handbag.
Oh, my gosh.
It's not bad.
See you, David. I guess that's goodbye.
Let's go.
So, now, we just made it back to the village, and we're gonna filter the venom. This is so cool.
Seeing everything from start to finish. Amazing. Their way of life, the whole thing.
So, all the curare is in there. You put the water in, and it goes down,
and then it filters out into the bottom into kind of, like, brownish liquid. Look at that.
Yeah, and then after that, he's gonna cook this. He just keeps doing it over and over, right?
We just leave it there. It drips, and once it's filtered out after half an hour, we just leave it,
and it becomes like a black paste, and that's when you've got the curare ready.
It's a very slow process. Roughly about an hour. He just keeps adding water.
There we have the venom. It's coming out like a nice,
thick brown. So, one hour from now, this will all be done. He added a lot of water.
If I didn't know any better, it looks like juicy coffee, huh?
Yeah.
There you go.
It's a dark roast.
Just a dark roast. Yeah, beautiful.
It's a cold brew that will kill you.
Literally.
Venom's ready. Now, he's gonna cook it.
So, the chief just told me that it's gonna take only 20 minutes to cook. Once it's done,
we're ready to put it onto the darts, and as he cooks it, he'll keep stirring it.
So, look at this. The chief is adding venom to these darts. So, what he does is he puts the
venom into a little pot, heats it up, then it becomes like this nice, thick, tar-ish substance,
and then gets his hundred darts that he puts into this container, takes them all out,
puts the venom, leaves them here so they dry out, then he puts them back in,
then he gets his blowgun, and he goes for the hunt. He's gonna hunt monkeys, wild boar,
basically anything you can find in the wild that's edible, he hunts it. And be careful.
Those darts are venomous.
Now that the curare is done and the hunting equipment is prepared,
we are heading by boat, deep in the rainforest,
prepared to stop anywhere the Rarani sea prey to catch.
Before we get set off, my friend Shama NYC had a bit of a surprise for us.
Yo, he did it.
All right, guys, we're going on a hunt, and this is amazing. We got Ari butt-booty naked
with the tribe. Let's go. So, we're going hunting for what? For monkeys. Oh my god. Wild boar.
Ready, ready. Standard. You look good, you look good, bro.
We're going one hour downstream. We're going to look for some wild boar. It's going to be
super exciting. We're going with a blowgun, they got spears. I'm pumped, I'm ready,
and maybe I take off my clothes now. So, the hard thing about wearing that little garb
is tying your penis. I have no foreskin, neither does he. I don't know how he's doing it.
How did he do that?
Guys, we made it here. We're going to enter the jungle.
Oh dude, you got the spear and everything. You mean this spear or this spear? Oh god.
It's amazing. This is too much, too much. Sable.
So, sable is a massive tree here in the Amazon. Let's walk in here.
This is amazing. I feel like I'm in a movie right now, man.
What's that? He's your man. He's the sharpest, so I would want to be close to him. If they start
running, he'll run first. All right, so we're behind this guy. Yeah, I'll follow him. All right,
this guy. Oh man. The rain has started. We're in this. Look at this tree, guys. Look how massive
this tree is. It looks like Avatar. The mother tree.
We're now deep in the jungle on a hunt for some animal. Maybe a monkey, maybe a boar. Who knows?
Wow.
Nuts. This is incredible, man. I feel like I'm roaming the planet of Pandora right now when
anything can come out of nowhere because there could be an anaconda over here. There could be a
caiman. All the animals of the wild are here. We hear them. We hear them. Look at this guy.
Let's see where he goes.
Here's the guy we need to stick with. He's the sharpest of them all. He nails it every time.
They say he almost never misses. I'm a little nervous. I really don't want to see a monkey get
hurt, but this is the way of life here, right? This is their culture. This is what they do. This
is how they survive. They're making certain sounds. I'll try to call it, see if it makes
any more noise. It's so hot. It's hard to have this on, but it's not going to get
bit up by mosquitoes. It's always been a lot of off. Mosquitoes, spiders, insects everywhere.
All right, so they see it. They see it right in front of us.
So it's monkeys, it's not boar. I don't know how I feel about that. The amount of mosquitoes
biting me right now is insane. They're coming in my face. I have to cover myself with my
little hoodie. It's nuts here. Never ending amount of mosquitoes.
It's a good fruit. Nice leachy, super juicy, a little crunch.
It's amazing. He's taking a day off. So I think we're going into a river. I'm not really ready
for this. Yeah, it's going to be up to here, bro. We're going to the water now. Okay.
I can't even grab anything, bro. Dude, it's cold, cold water. It could be an anaconda,
tiny caiman, anything in here. Piranhas live in these streams.
Nate, is it okay over there? It's very, very scary. It's a really intense situation walking
through this. We're in the jungle, deep, deep bush. All right, don't fall, don't fall, Nate.
You got to watch out. Every step is the last step. We're okay. I mean, it gets deeper and deeper,
right? Yep. I made it through. I made it through. I know we're experts now. Oh, it's getting deep.
All right, guys, I'm going to go into this water. Everybody just started sinking.
John went deep. Xiaoma went deep. I'm going in.
Yeah. Yeah. Okay. We're good. We're good. You? Oh, gosh. This is nuts.
God, this is insane. There, it's like you just keep sinking. Definitely worse than Dominica,
bro. Definitely way worse. This guy's showing me where to step, but there's still vines and
branches, everything everywhere. So, gosh.
I need a hand, bro.
The sad part is we have to do the same thing to get back.
Damn, I just got bit on the foot by an ant.
That was intense.
While we're walking up into this tree, we saw a guinea pig run by, and then he's like,
hey, look, there's another guinea pig. So, he saw a hole, and the guinea pig's in there. So,
he's poking at it, trying to get it out of here. They say it's a really delicious Amazonian guinea
pig. Live at the highway of leafcutter ants. So, they have a colony in the very bottom,
and then they'll make their way all the way up this massive tree, go to the very top,
get some leaves, cut a little bit, and then come all the way down and feed the colony.
My boy right here is like, you like ants, right? Stick your tongue up there.
Crazy.
So, right here we have like a, almost between a fig and a lime. Open it up.
Oh, that's beautiful. Nice. A little flesh right there. Nice and meaty.
You're not really supposed to eat this. If you do, it's very bitter. I enjoy it. Everybody
thinks I'm crazy that I eat it. It's straight up a lime. It's a lime though. We have no lunch.
This is our lunch right now.
This kid is going to climb the tree right now for us. He's going to be amazing.
You're my son. Your son?
A nice, like, spongy taste. Right into that nut. Very bitter.
Too much. Come spread it up. My feet hurt.
Oh my god, I caught one bird. I'm going for the second bird right now.
Exactly. So, like, for us in America, we go to the supermarket every day and for them,
it's they have to go to the jungle and find their food every day. Let's go.
This one's actually very nice. This is light.
My man here just gave me this fruit. It looked like star fruit, but
nope. Look at this. Super sweet.
All seeds. Nice little skin. I personally like the bitter taste when you bite into it,
but this one's sweet. I must tell you I haven't had lunch yet, so I'm
loving the fruit aspect of this jungle. Just delicious fruit.
They're all sour and bitter, but better than nothing in my stomach, right?
That was an intense hunt. We got two birds. I got really emotional watching these guys just
running through the jungle, getting them. I mean, he had a great vision on the birds
and they kept hitting.
So, he's saying, like, this is part of the tradition. They have to go out. They have to
get food for their family. They come home. They have a little bit of cassava, which is cassava,
and, you know, something to eat, and this is part of life here, right? So,
sometimes they get monkey, sometimes they get boar, sometimes they get bird. I mean,
it really depends on what they find, but that's how it is, you know?
This guy's been naked the whole day and it's been wild. It's been raining. There's mosquitoes.
There's ants. Literally, the second we took off our boots, we got in the water,
sunk deep. John got deep. This guy, I hope he's okay. Are you okay? Body okay?
Yeah, I'm good, man.
Yeah?
I'm good. I'm a little bit shook off, to be honest.
I know. I know. I know. I know. I know. I know. I know.
We got this. We're close.
Yes.
Oh, Oreos. Wow.
Wow.
So, they said the best thing to the jungle is to have Oreos, huh? Good snack?
Bro, it doesn't get wet. It's light. And Oreos are Oreos.
Lunch.
Everybody eating?
So, we got some pasta here, but I passed. They gave us some Oreos. That's good enough.
Gomez.
It's already raining like crazy. Too much. Too many pours.
You have to expect that every single day.
What's going to what?
They're going to jump off the boat and go chase us.
Straight up.
There's a monkey up here.
Let's get in the jungle.
Where'd they go?
We got to find them.
How are we going to find them?
One at a time.
Oh, yeah.
Let's go.
The hunt continues.
I thought it was over.
I'm getting impaled.
Let's go. Let's go. Let's go.
Stay in shape as much as I can.
Face experiences.
Let's go.
They're kind of scaring the monkey out.
I think it's a good shot.
Look, he's putting out the dark. Very nice.
The monkey's right here.
There it is. There it is.
Feeling of just running after something in the jungle.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So crazy.
So, so, so, so, so friendly.
When they're cutting this huge tree down.
Put the hole on that.
But, oh, wow.
So they're going to scare by putting a tree down.
Which is sad because we just saw the hollow monkey pet they have at the village.
So, dude, did he just cut the whole thing?
Knocked on the tree.
Hollow monkey comes out.
And I guess that's dinner for them.
Not for me.
No, I would not eat that.
Is everyone okay?
I thought it was going to fall.
It almost did.
I like ran.
Yeah, it would have hit you.
Yeah, it was coming down like this way.
It was close.
It was too close for comfort, guys.
We're walking on the log that we just cut.
The tree we cut.
So that's it.
We didn't get the monkey.
I'm actually happy we didn't get it.
I didn't really want to see that.
Perfect, bro.
It's the best, man.
It's the best.
Heart of palm.
Palm tree.
They get into the middle of it.
They cut it out.
Very, very thick.
Dense.
It's pretty good.
I love it.
Personally, I had it in Brazil a few times.
It's really tender.
It's like a juicy vegetable.
Exactly.
It almost feels like a root vegetable in a way.
But look at that.
Super soft.
Oh, my God.
It's spicy.
So if you've ever been to Brazil or Brazilian steakhouse,
you'll eat this.
Heart of palm.
This is a little different, though.
It's like shredded.
Oh, I eat that.
Look at this.
It breaks off.
Want some?
It's like sugarcane without the sugar.
Exactly.
It's really juicy, though.
Dying of thirst from the jungle.
Rainforest snack.
You know what I love about it?
It's going to fill you up.
More monkeys.
Going for another hunt.
You guys ready?
They saw four monkeys.
I don't see anything.
We're getting out of the tree here.
He hit it.
Yeah.
Or if it doesn't fall, the kids will climb up and grab it.
Because the phantom's going to take it.
Like when he met Santa Claus.
The kids will go home.
Monkey fell onto another tree.
Better run.
This jungle is intense.
It's hard to get over these guys.
They're flying.
I'm not used to it.
And the humidity level is out of control.
I can't believe we're walking through this jungle.
It's so deep.
So mushy.
Just getting in their face every second.
This is the wildest experience of my life.
This tops every other experience ever.
Amazonian.
That was the most epic experience of my life.
Seeing these guys both at the same time blow that dart.
They have no fear that we're going to be lost in the jungle.
They know how to get back up.
Oh my god.
This doesn't end the hunt.
Oh, there he is climbing.
Wait, he's still alive.
It's intense.
Crazy.
This is nuts.
This is the most intense hunt of my life.
First and only real one.
I'll put it at the top of my list of any travel experience ever.
I feel like I'm 400 years in the past in the middle of the Amazon jungle.
The hollow monkey is right above us.
He's in plain sight.
Hey, we're going back in the river, bro.
Back in the river.
Oh my god, my life is so deep.
My boots are full of mud.
Thank you.
He's right above us.
The monkey's injured.
So he's like drowsy, right?
I mean, the poison takes a little bit of time to take effect.
They say like 30 minutes.
And as you can see, he keeps packing and shooting.
He shot like four times in a row.
We got the monkey.
This is the second monkey we tried to get.
I'm not very happy with this.
Got very, very sad right there.
Hearing the monkey dying.
I mean, I get it.
I get it.
But personally, it hurts.
Hurts a lot.
I didn't want to do this again.
While I get into this, see how deep it is?
My entire boots are flooded.
Nasty ass mud.
Rainforest.
Gotta clean my feet after this one.
This is the ultimate travel experience ever.
Going here with a tribe that has made contact with humans,
but still live very off the grid in their own community,
away from the world.
I haven't had internet for days and I feel amazing.
But get ready for the intensity.
We haven't stopped all day.
Well, I don't know.
I don't know about them, man.
The boat's still not here.
We're like, we reached the river, but there's no boat.
And we're in the jungle last night.
This is intense.
This guy has a hotter monkey on him.
He's about to throw him in.
Where's the boat?
Let's get out of here.
All right, let's see how we get down.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Okay, yeah.
This was absolutely unreal experience.
This guy's washing up.
This guy took us into the jungle.
He ate our eyes right here.
Make sure you subscribe to his Instagram, bro.
Dead, but alive.
Feel great.
Can't even believe what we just did.
Right, Nate?
Yeah.
I can't believe it.
