After a long and wild day, I finally made it to Mombasa! This city on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast is considered the country’s street food capital. Come with me as I head out on a nighttime street food tour of Mombasa, Kenya!
Mombasa was the first capital of British East Africa, and is also Kenya’s oldest city. It dates back to 900 AD and has been a prosperous trading center for centuries. It was instrumental in the ivory trade in the late pre-colonial period and was also a key player in trading networks around the Indian Ocean. Today, it’s also Kenya’s second-largest city, with over 1.2 million residents living in the city, and over 3.5 million in the metropolitan area.
MAMA NGINA WATERFRONT: First, I tried some crunchy and freshly grated and fried cassava chips. I followed that with fresh coconut water and hearts of palm, roasted sweet potatoes, and roasted corn with lemon and cayenne.

Welcome to Mombasa, Kenya. This city dates back to 900 AD and is Kenya's oldest city. It was also
the first capital of British East Africa and has been a prominent trading center for centuries.
Before Kenya's colonization, Mombasa was instrumental in the ivory trade and was a
key player in trading networks around the Indian Ocean. Today, it's Kenya's second largest city
with over 1.2 million residents living in the city. And it's also the country's street food
capital. From crispy mishkak to juicy shawarma to crunchy cassava chips, you'll find it all in
this amazing city. Oh yeah. Oh, so hot. No problem. Let's go. The juiciest chicken ever. So come with
me and let's explore the street food culture of Mombasa, Kenya. Finally made it here to the
cultural city here in Kenya. And today we're here at Mamangina Waterfront and we're going to do the
street food tour of this beautiful area. Look at this behind us. We have guys doing cassava chips,
potato chips, they're roasting potatoes. They also have kebabs in the back. Follow me guys,
let's cross the street and let's go eat. Careful here. All right, here we go. And over here,
this gentleman, he's dicing up some chips, throwing it straight into the oil. And we'll try
it here. Let me show you this cassava right here. Oh yeah. Cassava chips. So what are you going to
eat? What do you want to eat? We're going to start with the cassava and then we will do the potato
chips. But we need to see how the guy makes all those things. He has a machine that he does it.
Perfect on it. So you can show you how he does it. Very, very good. Oh, I love this. So good.
Crunchy, not too oily. Cassava, way better than potato. Yeah, very good. Good stuff, man. This
is good stuff. Really, really good. All right guys, so let me try the spice. He has some spice
right here. You're saying it's a lot, right? Yeah, that's chili. Chili? Cayenne chili. Cayenne.
That's good. Add some more right there. Nice powder. Oh, it's good. Amazing. I love it. I
love it. This is so good. These are the best, man. I like it straight out of the fryer. So tasty,
not even oily. Try it. I could be a street food vendor. Hi, thank you. He brings the cassava,
gets the grater, grades it there, and throws it right over here. It sits, then he sells it in
bags. If you want spice, he adds spice. If not, he just adds some salt and that's it, right? Salt
Bay of Kenya. Oh, look, look, look. He melts it. He melted the plastic. Asante, asante, asante.
Hey, thank you so much. Asante, asante. We're going to come again a lot. Oh, this is going to
be awesome. Okay, what's next, Sam? Medafu. What's medafu? I know. We've been really, really
struggling with the chili, so let's get something to cool you down. So medafu is coconut? It's
coconut? Medafu is a young coconut. A young coconut. Yeah, right there. Oh, that's the best.
Good for your kidney. It's good for your bladder. You clean the urinal system.
Wow. He's finishing it? Oh, this is the best. This is the best. Tender coconut, tender coconut.
There's a lot of water in there, man. Done. That was so good. That's the best.
So right there. I make a spoon. Uh-huh. So he's making a spoon from coconut. He's going to open
the coconut so we can have the flesh. The jelly, right? I cut the flesh and then you eat. Oh,
you're cutting it like that, huh? It's amazing. Nothing like the tender coconut. Everywhere you
go in the world, man. Caribbean, Miami, South America, India, Africa. Okay. It doesn't stop.
Yeah, the best. The best. It is the best. Oh, wow. Look at that. The flesh, the medafu inside.
It's just like balls. Oh, yes. You know what they call this? Nectar of the gods.
A young coconut. Sweet. So filling. Incredible. This is the heart of the coconut tree.
The heart of the coconut. So like the coconut palm. If you cut the tree, that's palm. And then
you get this one. Amazing. You know what I love about the palm tree? You can eat everything,
right? Even worms. Okay, I'll try a piece of this. This is heart of palm. The heart of the coconut
tree. Palm heart. Palm heart. Brazil, they eat this everywhere. Oh, a little more.
The heart of palm is so delicious and super, super crunchy.
A big one. Look guys, this is what he gave me. So remove this, right? Move that and just get in
here. You can taste the coconut. Palm tree is the best. Best thing on planet earth right here.
It's heart of palm. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. All right, let's go.
So now we're going to have roasted maize and roasted sweet potatoes. So we're going to see
how good or how tasty they are. So they do the roast maize and or corn, people call it. And also
we do roasted sweet potatoes. So let's try it. I don't know, somewhere up there. Let's go and see
how good it is. Sweet potato, super hot, roasted. Oh my gosh. It's hot. It's super hot. Let's try.
I hope it falls apart. So soft. It's amazing. It reminds me of the consistency of breadfruit.
Had a breadfruit in the Caribbean. Barbados, Trinidad, Guyana.
It's sugary. Really tasty. Super sugary. You can feel the taste of the sugar. Natural sugar.
There's some chili. Yeah. Yeah, there's chili. Right here. I'm going to get a little bit here.
Nice and spicy. Oh, way better. The contrast, sweet, spicy and super soft. It's so meaty.
I can feel the chili.
Oh, it's hot. Oh, wow. So we try with some lemon. So put the lemon like this.
So it's your turn to taste it with lemon. Let's see how good it is.
So hot. Very, very hot. I can still feel it in my mouth.
Oh, I think it's way better with the lemon, right? With lemon and a little bit of chili. Yeah.
Super, super good. Roasted sweet potato is really, really good.
You know, I love everything we had. Super healthy. Of course, the crisp,
not so healthy because of the oil, but everything else. Awesome. Awesome.
If you guys don't know what this is, in Spanish it's called yuca.
Cassava. It's a root vegetable. It's amazing. Almost like a yam.
So this is what these guys are making from the cassava crisp that we already saw. So we do
have a whole bunch of them in a sack. So they keep on taking one by one. And these are the peels.
So they have to remove all these peels from the cassava to make the cassava crisps.
So we're going to have a taste of the white corn,
roasted white corn. And they normally had some of this. This is lemon. And then they put a little
bit of chili like this. You see how it is. And then you apply it like this. So they give it a
different, totally a different taste. Let me have more of that chili. Like that? Yeah. So you will
see how it's done. Right. And then you'll be good already to have a taste of this. So let's see.
Three, two, go. Wow. A little bit of chili. And also we have, you can feel the lemon. Grab
the lemon. On top like that. Put some of those juices in there. And then go in and bite.
I've never had it with spice like this. So roasted. I love corn.
Has no healthy properties, but it's delicious.
It's fantastic. Put some more in there. I'm going to put up on corn. I'm like a squirrel.
Next up is we're going to test the local tea, how they make the tea and also the local
snacks. Mandazi, Mahamri, Tukavud, all Swahili local snacks. So let's do it. Let's go. Yeah.
It's like nonstop street food everywhere, right? Lighthouse, street food, Sukat. The addictive
drug. The addictive drug. Yeah. All right. After a 10 minute drive, we're here in the old town.
I can smell the kebabs and the shawarma. Shawarma. Good. My man, how are you doing?
So you do the shawarma? It's amazing. He does the barbecue, right? So here we have chicken
shawarma. And then over here we have beef. Beef Mishkak. Chicken Tikka. So over here,
he has the chicken shawarma and then they put it into these nice little rolls. Can I have one?
Don't worry. I'll be paying for it. Oh, so what do you put in here? You put some cabbage.
Some sauce. Some mayonnaise. Then I put the chicken meat. All right. I'm going to try this,
guys. Here we go. This is what I need, guys. Nice cabbage salad. Get the mayonnaise in there.
The flavored chicken with this nice marinade. Nice, man. So good. So juicy. So juicy right here.
Oh. My man, you made my day right now. The more you take, the more it's sweeter. The sweeter it
is. I need to try the Mishkak, okay? So if you guys don't know Mishkak, that is like basically
a kebab, right? In Oman, they call it Mishkak as well. But then they put tamarind sauce on top.
But here they put just a nice little marinade. He takes it off, puts it on, heats it up. Over here,
I love the chicken, man. Yeah, it's breast, right? You got the chicken, like the wing right here.
And then this is the breast. That shawarma wrap was so good. The mayonnaise plus the chicken,
the cabbage. Wow. So this is probably hot by now. It's ready, right?
I'll tell you, I'm so happy to be in Mombasa, man. We made it to Mombasa
after a crazy day. Crazy, crazy day. We made it. Perfect. Perfect. Wow. Look at that. More kebabs.
It doesn't stop. The chicken tikka. Chicken tikka. Yeah, chicken tikka.
Love chicken tikka. Yeah. So I just gotta pick it up like this. And then I'll just grab this one
like that. Look at that. So delicious. Wow. I'll tell you, that was the best thing I had in a few
days. That was ridiculous. Yeah. Thanks, guys. Thank you so much. All right. So right here,
they're making some chips. My friend over here is putting together Mishkak, beef Mishkak, which is
like nice kebabs in front of us. More chicken. This is the best barbecue in East Africa. Habibi,
welcome to Mombasa. Habibi. Habibi. Oh, this guy is awesome. So what sauce is that? Is that
tamarind or what is that? It's tamarind. Just like in Oman. In Oman, it's all tamarind. My friend,
how are we doing this? Just like this. So that. Oh, yeah. Oh, so hot. No problem. Let's go.
The juiciest chicken ever. I know. I know. It's hot. It's hot. It's really hot.
The tamarind, guys.
What an area. I mean, come here, eat everything on this trip. Let's put the potato in here
and just press. Wow. Look at that, guys.
Amazing machine, huh? This is like the best machine ever to make fries, huh? Just one.
No force. Just one. Just one. Instead of one chop, it's one push.
Perfect. Perfect. That is amazing. So like, look how they came out. This is the French fries.
Perfect. That's incredible. Dude, this is an amazing machine. And this is an iron, right?
Oh, wow. And the fire there. Then he fries it right now, right?
It's going to put it in and just straight in to the oil. That's a good reward after a tiring day.
Obed, Tasos and I had a crazy day. Cancel flight. We made it. The bag's lost. It's okay. It's coming
later, hopefully. Yeah, you just take it easy. I'm going to cut some shawarma. I hope you guys
enjoyed this video. If you did, please give me a thumbs up and let me know. Would you ever come
here and eat? Because you have to. The food is absolutely phenomenal. And I'm horrible at this,
bro. I would be the worst shawarma cutter ever.
