🇳🇮VISIT NICARAGUA: https://www.instagram.com/visitanicaragua 🇳🇮CARLOS: https://www.instagram.com/carlostapiapineda 🌎 MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG: https://davidsbeenhere.com/ My road trip through Nicaragua continued with a stop in Masatepe, a small town outside of Masaya. We were there to try a special dish called mondongo, which is made from calf tripe and feet! Come with me as we eat the Nicaraguan delicacy called mondongo and explore Masatepe! You can’t visit Masatepe without trying mondongo, and the town is also famous for its furniture makers! They make chairs, sofas, rocking chairs, and more. But first, we were starting at El Rancho del Mondongo to eat! 👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH: https://teespring.com/stores/davids-been-here The restaurant is rustic and open-air, with high ceilings. There, my guide Carlos and I met with Judith, who would walk us through how to make mondongo. First we saw the vegetables they use: corn, cassava, ginger, lettuce, squash, and more. I saw them cooking the tripe and beginning the soup. It contained a couple of different types of corn, calf ribs, cabbage, and more. It also contains calf feet, which I normally don’t like because there’s no meat on them! I’d be trying the mondongo and the ribs soup, along with rum plata, which is the official mondongo drink in Nicaragua. First, I started on the tripe, which was incredible and spongy! I loved the earthy, iron-rich flavor of the meat, as well as lots of fat and vegetables. I even liked the feet, which had some meat on them! The ribs in the rib soup were so tender, they fell apart in my mouth! On the side, we had tortillas, avocado, lemon, salt, cheese, and rice. The rum with the lemon and salt was great. Then, we put the cheese and avocado in the tortilla. It’s great, but if you dunk it into the soup, it’s even better! After eating, it was time to tour the town and see the local furniture! It only took a three-minute drive for us to make it to Mercado de Artesanias Mazatepelth in the central part of town. There were lots of wicker chairs and wicker baskets, as well as wooden tables, wooden chairs, storage ottomans, and more in the furniture factory. They showed me some bread baskets I like, as well as laundry hampers, and more. Everything was so beautiful! The woman gave me a bread basket as a gift and I also bought a corner shelf. I was hoping to come back on the last day of my trip to pick it up! Then, we drove three more minutes to a Muebles Zulema, where they carve wooden furniture! I loved the rocking chairs, which were beautiful! They had horses carved on the sides. You can get a set of 4 and a table for $400 USD. The craftsmanship was incredible! I could also see people sanding down pieces of a table that they’d glued together. They even had a full bar and a table with legs carved to look like a lion and its feet! Finally, we drove back to Granada to see the border on Lake Nicaragua. It’s beautiful! Tomorrow, we’d be heading to Ometepe, the largest island in a freshwater lake in the world. But for now, we grabbed some coconuts from a vendor! We drank the water out of them, which was sweet and refreshing! What a great way to wrap up my time in the area! Where have you been? What's up guys? David Hoffman here from David's Bin here coming at you from super hot Masatepe,
Nicaragua. A small town right outside of Masaya. The reason we came here today is to try the
Mondongo. Mondongo is a soup made from calf tripe and feet. They say it's amazing and it's a must
try when you're in the area and you also have to come to this town and buy some furniture.
As you can see, literally everywhere you go here, they're making furniture. Rocking chairs,
they got benches, so many different things. We're here at El Rancho del Mondongo. We're gonna go
inside, we're gonna see them make the soup and then we're gonna eat. My man. Yes, come on. Let's
go. Mondongo. He's literally been talking about this dish the whole trip. Can't wait. Loving this
restaurant. Super rustic, open air, huge ceilings, all wooden tables and right here we have Judith.
Let's go, let's go. It's gonna be great.
So we got corn, we have cassava, we have ginger, we have lettuce, we have squash.
So if you have a hangover, eat this soup. It'll take you back.
So they have baby corn.
So that is calf feet. I personally don't love it. It's basically just all cartilage.
I'll have it.
Trying both of them. Mondongo and ribs. Rib soup. This rib soup is gonna be phenomenal.
It's gonna be tasty.
This is a wild place.
Oh, I'm excited for this one. This is gonna be an amazing soup. Probably
my favorite soup of the trip. This is so good. Yes. Costillas, so ribs and then right here we
have tripe. Mondongo. Let's go. Let's go, my friend. Let's go. I just have to get in here.
I love the inside. This is the inside of the stomach. I have to eat this first.
It's so soft. It's like spongy.
I personally love organs. This is the stomach, right? Compact with flavor.
Organs are a lot more tender, super juicy. And now we're gonna try the broth. Okay.
The rum. They want me to drink rum.
I love how they put it in these huge portions, right? Nothing's cut up in small pieces.
I personally can go with this all day. This all day.
I know a lot of people don't like it. I personally love it.
No, I love it too. Nicaraguan people love it. I told you that if you come to Mazatepe to buy
furniture, you have to eat Mondongo soup. Yeah. If you're a vegetarian.
This is the ultimate hangover cure, guys. I mean, the soup, the broth, there's so much flavor in
here. You've got the fat of the tripe coming throughout. You have the foot, right? So let
me get the foot. So the foot is basically all cartilage.
Oh yeah. Mondongo. Buddy, you have to taste ronplata. I will. I like the feet though. This
is not that bad. I mean, it's super juicy. Of course it is. Just rip it out. I mean, all cartilage
And this is like a piece of the foot. You don't have the foot. Yeah, like the tendon.
Exotic dish, for sure. Of course it's exotic.
This is different? Yeah. Because this is ribs. This is the ribs.
Oh, this rib falls apart.
Yeah, no, it's delicious. I personally rather go with ribs all day. I mean, obviously,
tripe is really good. It's a more exotic dish though. Ribs, super compact with flavor. Any
piece of the body that touches the bone or any piece of meat that touches bone,
it's going to have a lot more flavor in it.
Okay. You have to put lemon on the soup. Oh yeah, but we have tortilla, we have lemon,
we have rice.
Okay, but you know what? Hold on. Let me take a break for a second. Let me try the rum.
Salt. Like that, right? Like that, yeah. You go this and like that.
That wasn't so bad. It went pretty smooth. Soup? Soup, yeah. And hangover, forget it.
Basically, right?
It's like basically a tortilla with cheese and avocado. But the cheese is different because
this is guajara. Guajara. So basically, a cheese avocado taco. Exactly. And at the same time,
you drink soup.
The combination. It's really good. Oh yeah. So good.
Way better with the soup.
The best tacos I've ever had in Mexico, you dip them into sauces. Really?
Guys, avocado and cheese like literally evaporate. Yeah. You know what I love about it?
It's such a rustic feeling. Yes. Very rustic. Very rustic. Amazing town. We're eating on
Yes, Mazatepe. You can walk for buy furniture, clothes. It's a small town. It's close to Managua.
It's not so far. You can come on Sunday. Actually, people, Nicaraguan people from Managua
used to come on Sunday for buy furniture, drink a soup, volver a la vida after the hangover.
Yeah. You're about to live after a Saturday night of partying. You know,
I don't party anymore. I go to sleep at 10 p.m. Me too.
I just believe the day, you're supposed to enjoy the day. And that means when the sun is up,
we are almost 40.
It's like a towel. It's hard to actually eat because it's so spongy.
Mmm. That was too good. And it's so big. It's so filling. I mean, between the massive cabbage,
the yuca, the corn, and the amount of tripe. I'm going to squash.
Pumpkin. Pumpkin.
If you want, also some spice here. Chili. I'm so happy. I'm so happy with this meal.
What an amazing place. So I guess last thing to do around here is go see the furniture, right?
Yeah, the furniture. Of course, you have to see all the furniture. Yes. Very beautiful.
All right, guys. We're going to go around the town. We're going to see some of the furniture.
We might buy some furniture. We're going to the central
park of Mazatepe. They sell furniture. Do you want to see? Let's go.
Only a three-minute driving right here. Look at this. Look how many different
pieces of furniture there are.
They're calling us. They're like, come over here. Come over here. I want to show you this.
Very good. All are beautiful, different materials that you have to see.
I mean, I love these baskets.
The baskets are beautiful.
This is amazing. This is a furniture factory. Wow.
This is incredible.
These are amazing. So these are like little stools, but they also have like a hidden compartment,
so you can store stuff, right? So it's storage.
So these are like $2,500, so like $80 US dollars.
These are beautiful.
Oh, yeah. That's nice. It's nice.
A little bread basket.
They have a lot of outdoor furniture. Over here, it's like couches,
chairs, rocking chairs. Over here, we have the baskets. The baskets are really nice.
It's a mix, right? So you have baskets for like bread. You have small ones,
you have medium size, and then you have these. This is more like for dirty laundry, right?
This is like what I have at home. I have a big one. I have a really, really big one. It's not bad.
I mean, it's $500 for this. So whatever that is, it's like a $15 US dollar for this. Handmade.
Handmade basket. Yeah. Amazing, man. Look at these chairs.
This is very nice. Nice table. Beautiful table.
Okay, guys. So we bought two things. Well, she gave me this one as a gift,
and then he got that one. My basket. $600 for the basket. $600. It's not a bad deal.
It's like $18 US dollars. I think it's amazing. If you can, definitely stop in this town,
buy some stuff. I think I'm going to take this one. This beautiful corner piece. Look at this.
I'm going to see how much it weighs. They're going to weigh it for me. We're going to come
here the last day. If it weighs like less than what an extra bag would cost, then we'll take it,
right? So an extra bag, maybe like 32 kilos. This hopefully is less than that, and then I'll pay.
So this table is $2,000. So like $60, $70. I don't know. Last day, we'll figure it out.
Hopefully, I can take it. It's an extra bag, though. You're paying for an extra bag on the
flight. We drove like three minutes, and we're here at another furniture place,
but they're actually carving the furnitures here. So it's like chairs.
I love this rocking chair, guys. It took him a day. It would take him a day to finish the
whole thing. Right now, he's setting it down. These are done. Look at these. Beautiful. Wow.
Oh, look at this. Beautiful. The horse.
So $13,000. So $400 for the whole set.
So you have four of these rocking chairs. Beautiful. The craftsmanship is amazing.
I love the carving here. The horse.
Those chairs over there, they have the horse. These, they have the steering wheel. Well,
the boat steering wheel. I forgot the name of that. My Spanish is better than my English today.
Back and forth, back and forth. Same price. Roughly around $350. So they have these rocking
chairs. They have sets. They have stools. They have big tables. This is amazing. The whole
town is awesome. Right here. Mueble Zulema. Visit this place.
So it roughly takes one week to do this table. So what they did is they mixed a few different
pieces, then they glued together, and now they're sanding down the extra pieces that they glued.
Wow. Look at this. They have a bar here. It's like a pool table. So you have to, you know,
call and tell them what you want. You have to order it. I like this though. The pool table,
custom. Look at the feet of the pool table. I mean, it literally is feet.
Incredible. Let's go. Let's get out of here. We're going straight back to Granada,
and we're going to see the last thing I have to see in Granada. The Malecon, or basically the lake,
the boardwalk on the lake. Let's go. Let's go. Hopefully we'll find some food there.
I'm a little hungry. I'm crazy. All right. Yeah. We are in the Granada Lake.
Lake of Nicaragua. But this is the Malecon. This is the boardwalk or the pier. You can see the
islet. This lake has 365 islets over there. This is Lake Nicaragua, the biggest lake in the country.
Here they have a Malecon, or a pier, really. That's a pier. This is the Malecon. This is the
boardwalk, right? From that pier, they used to have a ferry that used to take you down to Ometepe,
right? So that's the island we're going to tomorrow. It's the biggest island on a freshwater
lake in the world. So it would take four hours, but they stopped that ferry, right?
And it's actually closed right now. So the only thing you have here is the port. You have this
big sign that says Love Granada, like they have in Philly. You have the boardwalk. And over here,
we have a guy selling some coconuts. Let's get a coconut. I'm thirsty. It's too hot. 100 degrees
right now.
Hello, how are you?
Good, thank you.
Almost there?
Yes.
Did you make two holes?
No.
Oh, how nice.
Thank you, friend.
Brother, let's drink this.
Cheers.
How is it?
Delicious.
Sweet.
This is so sweet.
Oh my gosh, amazing.
So what did we do? Mondongo?
We did Mondongo at El Rancho del Mondongo.
El Rancho del Mondongo.
Mazatepe.
We went to the restaurant,
we saw the process, we served the food,
we ate, we tried some of the rum, white rum.
The food's amazing.
I think the rib is my favorite.
The trip's good, but the ribs were absolutely phenomenal.
After that, we saw a few of the furniture vendors.
Really cool spot. It's a must visit.
It's only like a 15-20 minute drive from Granada.
So it's definitely a day trip you must do.
And then we came here to the Malacon.
Not too much happening here, so it's really hot.
It's 2 p.m. We got some coconut.
And that's it, guys. I hope you enjoyed this video.
If you did, please give me a thumbs up.
