As my Pakistani adventures continued in Karachi, I headed over to the coast to experience the city’s incredible seafood market! Join me as I explore the biggest fish market in Karachi and enjoy some delicious Pakistani seafood in Karachi, Pakistan!
My guides Furqan and Shehroze from Manaky and I began on a fishing boat at the jetty in the bustling port area. I couldn’t wait to visit the market, find some fish to buy, and have it cooked up with some masalas for dinner!
This area is packed and super busy. You can look around, but you can also take boat rides and catch tuk-tuks. There’s a lighthouse built by the British during the British Raj in the area. Across from the clock tower are tons of fish vendors!
The fish are huge! There are some called cheetah fish that have spots on them, as well as long barracuda-like ones, kingfish, and red snapper. You can buy one and the vendors will butcher it for you. Then, you can take the fish home to cook, or to a restaurant to cook it!
I watched as the vendors cleaned and de-scaled the fish before we continued on. The market was sensory overload. It was full of smells and activity!
Further on, we came across a bunch of vendors selling some king prawns, grouper, tuna, crabs, and massive red snappers. There were so many fish to see! I picked up one of the huge red snappers. It was big and heavy!
We bought two fish, which they cleaned and butchered for us. Then, we continued through the market, past more vendors and restaurants. The cooks were preparing fried crabs, grilled fish, prawns and more. The people were so kind; everyone was inviting me into their restaurants!
We found a restaurant called Rashid Sea Food Fish Counter, where they would marinate and grill our fish and prawns. I tried a super succulent and spicy grilled prawn. I loved the flavor!
They grilled our dhotar (grunter) fish and kingfish on skewers over charcoal. The kingfish was more kebab-style. We had the prawns in prawn karahi as well as grilled prawns with some lemon and roti!
The prawn karahi with roti was succulent and super spicy. It had a kick of ginger and the peppers were really nice! Then, I jumped on the grilled prawns, which were nice and charred with a delicious smoky flavor. But the karahi was to die for!
I loved the burst of flavors and the oil in the prawn karahi. The vegetables and spices were unbelievable! Then, I jumped on the kingfish kebab and added some pepper sauce. It was so chunky! All of the seafood was unreal!
We also had a delicious chutney, which had a nice kick of heat but wasn’t too spicy. The masala on the dhotar made up for it, though. It was deceptive, though—the spice sneaks up on you, but it was also really juicy!
The fish was so tender and fresh, and practically fell apart in my mouth! This is my favorite way to eat while traveling! Best of all, the general manager and owner were so kind to us and treated us with so much hospitality. They didn’t even charge us!

Look at that guy.
Massive.
Okay, so that's five kilos.
What's up everyone?
This is David Hoffman from David's Bin here
coming at you from Kimari, Karachi, Pakistan
in partnership with my friends at Menaki.
This is the Jetty port area.
This is a real experience.
Whoa, this guy is not stopping.
We are going to go through the fish market right now.
We're going to look for some fish to have for dinner.
Once we find what we want, we're going to take it to a restaurant
and we're going to put it on the grill with some masalas.
I'm excited.
I'm ready.
Guys, whoa.
One sec, my friend.
Let me get off this thing.
My friends, how are you doing?
Rock and roll?
This is it.
Incredible.
So people are here loading the boats,
bringing the fish, right?
All the cats.
What else can we see here?
You can see there's an island manor.
Manor?
Yeah, some of the boats go to the island.
Okay.
So from here you can also take tours on boats, right?
Yes.
So they'll take you out.
They call it crabbing, right?
So they bring fish.
You can eat.
You can relax out there for a few hours.
So what we're doing is we're going to go deep into the market.
We're going to get some fish.
Let's go.
So here in the port area, you can get a tuk-tuk.
You can get on a boat.
You can buy some souvenirs, some glasses, some hats.
And right here, we have the lighthouse.
This was built by the British back in the British Raj days.
You know, more souvenirs.
Lots of people walking through right now.
This is like the time of day, right?
So David, that's not the lighthouse.
That's the Kemari Jetty Clock Tower built by the Britishers.
So right across from the clock tower, we have the vendors.
Lots of fish.
Huge, massive fish.
Do you know some of the fish they have?
Do they have tuna, sea bass?
They have dhotar.
They have pomfret.
Row.
Rowska, rowska.
Fishka.
This all sounds like words I've never heard before, man.
It's kind of a fish.
It's a fish?
Look at this massive one.
Wow.
Big fish.
So this one is called the cheetah.
So it's a cheetah because it has spots, right?
I've never heard of that before.
I've never seen this one.
And here, there's a big mix of fish, right?
But they're very similar.
Looks like some type of mullets and stuff, right?
That one looks more like a barracuda. Yeah long one
So the way it works here is you grab right you order whatever you want or you buy whatever you want
Yes, and then they'll cut it up for you and you take it home
But we're gonna do the restaurant but you can do either or you take it home or you can go to the restaurant, right?
Great. So how many more vendors are there's more over here, right a lot more
Friend thank you
Which one's kingfish this one so my over here
Yes, let's go for it I know because it's like more of a flatfish right and then this is kingfish and there's that a grouper
Oh, it's red snapper. Okay
What's the name he's calling it corn fish home first, yeah, it's actually a barracuda looks like a bad
I mean, it's you know, very similar. Yeah, very long
It's all red snapper, right? So lots of red snapper kingfish pump it the cheetah fish, which is not cheetah
So many man and over here they're chopping it up right let me see
Cleaning cleaning
Take off the scales because in the port area you see a lot of trucks coming through and this is where all the oil is
Stored and shipped throughout the whole country and you have the market here and it's like a sensory overload, right? Lots of amazing smells
I mean if you don't like fish don't come here, but I love fish for me
It's the best. The only thing is I don't like the bones in the spines, you know going through that
I don't think anyone does man. No, I know some Bengali to do man
Yeah, they love it. They love it. But uh, yeah over here is the market, right? So lots more fish
They got some prawns and big fish. So what do you think we're gonna get today?
I think we get some prawns and
Crab, okay
Look at this fish this whoa, so this vendor has prawns
He is king prawns huge massive prawns as well as some massive red snappers
He's saying like five six kilos. I thought it was a lot more maybe like ten kilos and he has another fish here
I mean just a variety of fish. Let's keep going, right? Let's see the market Wow
Look over there lots of people and they're cleaning fish not stuff. Oh, yeah. Yeah lots more people
So over here, we have like seven different vendors. All of them have a lot of fish this vendor particular has huge
Red snapper gonna pick it up. Is it okay?
Look at that guy
Massive. Oh
Okay, so that's five kilos
He also has some kingfish right massive kingfish as well huge prawns. So what are we gonna get?
What are we interested in like what can we actually put on barbecue?
Okay, okay, so it's more like a white fish
That's red snapper, well, it's a smaller red snapper. These are like huge
Okay, so let's do it or let's keep looking around. I mean, it's basically the same thing, right?
They all have similar fish and similar seafood. Oh, look at that. He has a grouper. Oh, he does huge grouper
10 kg. Yes, that guy's got some crabs. Let's go check that out
Let's get two kinds of fish prawns and then let's go have it cooked differently
So we'll have karahi made out of the prawns and then we'd have the prawns grilled
Okay, and we can get the fish grilled and I'm not a huge fan of the crabs. You just don't get enough meat
Yeah, that's the problem. It's a lot of work. It is a lot of digging in, you know
Yeah, you know the fishermen are bringing in their catch. We have a lot of grouper here in baskets, right? So grouper
What else we have red snappers and what's this one? This is like tilapia. He has tuna. He has dream
Obviously not tilapia because tilapia is a freshwater fish and here's another huge tuna. I mean lots of good fish
So what are we gonna get? Tuna? We thought that that dotar that he mentioned previously would be better to have grilled
okay, so we'll probably get that some prawns and
Yeah, we can go for some tuna if you if you're in the mood
I love tuna, but I like it raw. So I don't think it's gonna be good. Okay
Funny thing is I'm going for sushi tonight. Remember sushi?
And here we go, we're gonna clean our fish. This is as gory and as real as it gets, right?
Yeah, I mean you order your fish. They sent over here to the guy who cleans it
We got two fish the first one
He basically just cut it all up took off the scales tail fins, you know
All the organs and the other fish is more like a barracuda. It's like a steak
So it's a little spine and all the spines around it and then across from us
We have the guy cleaning the prawns. So he takes out the you know, the
Wings the tail the vein the vein, you know, that's the one thing you should never get if you ever eat prawns
Throw it away because you're eating the garbage, right?
And that's it. All right, I'm hungry
Luckily, we took a little break because we got really full today
So we're in the back lanes and there's more market here, right? So a few more vendors
Yeah, and then restaurants restaurants cooking the food that you picked up from the vendors. That's all it is here, right?
Yep
so you can't just come here and eat you have to go pick and
Bring so we're going to give it to the to the cook, right? They're gonna come back and eat over here
Yep, great. Wow, look at that more fish never-ending. So what else we got here? Oh, what is this?
That's crab. Yeah, so this is crabs with local masalas
You smell it
Smells amazing. I know it smells delicious
We'll skip this for now
Loving this street. Everybody's so friendly people have invited me in to eat and all their restaurants. They're making fish outside
So it's good
They're also grilling fish grilling prawns crabs and they also have again the market here and this guy over here
The owner of this restaurant is many our fish and then we're gonna go grill it. Come in. Come in. Oh
Here in the back. They're grilling up our barbecue prawns, right? So are you called grilled prawns?
So what's the difference between a kebab prawn?
And then barbecue, okay, that's the difference. Yeah, so it's so if it's on the skewer, it doesn't mean it's a kebab
Okay, so it's grilled and then over here. He's marinating our fish. They're putting it on to this
For this for the grill, right? I don't even know what the name of that thing is
That's grill. I'm sure has another name my friend David. Let's try this out. So I'm gonna try
Spicy
So suck it
No, I enjoy the taste. I can't wait. Is that for me the whole thing? Yeah, give me like four of those
Yeah, so we're grilling the daughter and we have the kingfish on skewers
But you're also going to be grilled over the charcoal over there
They've already been marinated the kingfish is more like a kebab style where we've got pieces fillets of
Kingfish on the skewer. So we eat them right off the skewer then I like that more because no bones
Oh, yeah, your flesh so good with the masala here
I mean the aroma in this kitchen is
Epic and they don't stop this guy keeps adding this out to all different fish and it just keeps going and going going and people
Just come it's like an assembly line here
Like one two three, this is the worst though cuz you're in the fire all day
So that's where they put the coal on fire because when they've got a lot of rush they need coal rolling out like
Again, they have to cater to the assembly line
It's like an inferno out there man. Look at this. Whoa the fire
That's crazy. It's got a massive blower. I know a massive blower. I mean you gotta stay away from the outside
Yeah out there
Thank you, thank you, thank you, it's too nice. Yeah, too nice. All right now that we saw all the fish being cooked
Let's go eat. I am starving. I can't wait. Okay, so here we've got the prawn karhai's
And then we've got the kingfish grilled and this is dothar which we now know is called grunter in English
It's called grunter fish and the only thing we're waiting for now are the grilled prawns
And once we have them, we're ready to dig in. All right guys, let's start
So grab some roti. Sorry, I'm using two hands. I gotta try this first. This is my favorite
The prawn karhai. Oh, it's still super hot and it's spicy. Is that right?
Spices
Ginger
Nice and succulent
Spicy I mean just right I'd give it like a I'd say seven out of ten in terms of spice level
Fantastic though. Next we gotta jump on
Some of the prawns, right? So
Still pretty hot
Grill prawn
Nice and charred
Wow, sir, that's so good. The prawns are the best. No, I'm good
Karhai, so much flavor
This is a gift from the owner, right?
That guy was way too, he's too humble
Just go in dig all that look at the oils so much oils
This is one of my favorite prawns ever
Yeah, man, nicely
So much flavor got the vegetables the ginger
Spicy that's the one thing you have to know in this city. There's a lot of spice
Okay, let's get some of the King right? So pick it up. So this is King fish kebab
But this time I'm gonna add some chutney a little bit, right?
spicy
So it's a big white fish, huh? Yeah
Nice flesh like the tart on top and a little burnt
We keep going with this one though
You want chutney? Oh, yeah the little thing. The seafood here is unreal
Hmm
Now we're digging in so what are we missing doesn't really matter eat it. All right
Let's get all the meat off of the skewers
Chutney's not too spicy though
I thought it had a bit of a kick
A little bit. I don't know how chunky it is
Look at the fish
It just breaks off
Yeah, it just falls apart, right?
Love the masalas
Man, literally we have like two each
It's so fresh
About the market right here
There's no better way to eat
Look at that flesh
This is so good
I love the smokiness to it
The masala
I don't even know what to compare this fish to
So I'd say it's like a
I don't know
What do you think?
Whatever it is, it is giving you the sweats
Yeah, it definitely is
Oh wow
Dip it right here
Spicy now
It definitely has a kick to it
It kicks in later
Spiciest thing is for sure this one
But it has the most
Sauce and gravy
That is the difference, right?
All these are more on the grill
That one as well
I'm missing the best thing
For me it's the hardest fish to eat though
Juicy
Masalas
Wow
Super juicy
Extremely juicy
So much flesh
Huge fish, right?
Look at this
Incredible experience, man
When you told me we're gonna go to a fish market
I had no idea what to expect
Usually fish markets, it's not like this
Fish market to get home
I've been to some places in the Philippines
Where you do the same thing
And then the restaurant is right across
You go inside, but not like this
Street with all the promotion
People buying fish
People buying drinks
It's awesome
Look at the fish
So spicy
So meaty
It's definitely spicy
And you can't tell I'm like
Chili one, chili two, chili three
It's only Pakistani style
Some parts
The spices
More than the normal spice
Too much
Juicy
We flipped over the fish
We get some flesh and some skin
This side's better
Almost no masalas on this side
It's very light
The other side was spicy
My friend, how much is the bill?
There is no bill for you, sir
Purely complimentary for you
The country that everything is free
You people are guests to us
And very special to us
Thank you so much
What an incredible experience here at the Kamadi
Port seafood area
We started off at the clock tower
We saw all the boats, we walked over through the seafood market
We saw all the vendors with fish
Grouper, king fish, leopard fish
Cheetah fish
This infinite seafood
From there we grabbed our fish
We brought it here to the
Rashid seafood
Incredible hospitality there
The general manager and the owner
Treated us like kings
Everything was free
We went in the back, we saw them cooking the fish
The best for me was the prawn karai
That was so mouthwatering
So much flavor
Absolutely delicious
What was your favorite?
I think the grunter was amazing
It was so juicy and so well marinated
Very spicy
And the chutney was amazing too
It had a kick
And the king fish, super chunky
Like a lot of meat
We left a lot but we gave it to somebody in need
So it's all good
