🇵🇰 MANAKY: https://www.manaky.com 🎥 MANAKY: https://www.instagram.com/manakyinc/ My food adventures in the city of Karachi, Pakistan continued with a very special Pakistani street food challenge! Join me as I take on a couple of friends in the ultimate pani puri challenge in Karachi, Pakistan! Pani puri is one of the most popular street foods in South Asia. It consists of a rice dough patty that puffs up into a crispy, hollow ball when it’s fried; a potato filling; and a spiced water called pani. 👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH: https://teespring.com/stores/davids-been-here In addition to potatoes, the aloo filling can also contain chickpeas, chilies, and other vegetables. The vendor may then add different chutneys like tamarind or mint, and then add the pani, which is a spiced water that can be minty, spicy, or both! You can find pani puri throughout South Asia under various names, including golgappa, puchka, and fushka, in countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. It originated in the Indian state of Maharashtra, which is where I first tried it at Elco Restaurant in Mumbai. It has been my favorite Indian street food ever since! Since then, I have had pani puri dozens of times, and I’ve even done multiple pani puri challenges against both myself and some friends! This time, I’m squaring off with my friends Furqan and Shehroze from Manaky in Karachi, Pakistan! We’d be doing this challenge with some help from our friend Alizeh, also from Manaky, who set everything up for us. We even skipped breakfast so our stomachs would be nice and empty so we could eat more than usual! I usually tap out at around 35 pani puris, but I was hoping to break my personal record today. Tell me, before you watch, who do you think won our ultimate pani puri challenge in Pakistan? How many do you think each of us ate? Where have you been? Look at that, how many Pani Puri's? About 200. 200. Good morning everyone, I hope you're all doing
well. This is David Hoffman from David's Bin here coming at you bright and early in Karachi,
Pakistan in partnership with my friends at Menaki. Today we're gonna do a Pani Puri challenge. My
friend Furkan and Sherroz, if you guys don't know about Pani Puri, it's like a rice puff ball. You
stuff it with either chickpeas, you know, potatoes and water. Pani is water, right? And in Pakistan
they have it as well, you know. India, it's like locally everywhere. Here you can find it in Karachi
and also other cities. Yes. And yeah, I love Pani Puri. I'm like a big Pani Puri guy. I can eat a
million of them. I usually do this challenge and eat like 35. Maybe I break my record today and eat
45. We'll see. We'll see. And so how many can you eat? What do you think? I guess like 25 or 30.
25 or 30? Yeah. Well luckily for us we skipped breakfast today. It's like 9 30 in the morning.
I'm ready. Let's go. Next Pani Puri challenge.
Hello. What's up? How you doing? Look at that, how many Pani Puri's? About 200. 200. Yeah, not all at
once. This is some of them. Okay. And we'll be bringing out more hot Puris for you. Wow. This is
the Puri. So all you do is crack it right like that. Like that. And you stuff it and you eat
non-stop. So Rose, how you doing man? Good man. How are you David? Very good. What do we have today?
So we're going to be having Pani Puri but with a twist. So Pani Puri in Pakistan is eaten with
chickpeas, just boiled chickpeas. But what we do is we add some masalas to it and then on the side
we also give a mixture of boiled and mashed potatoes that have masala in it. What you do is
you crack the Puri open, take either the the potatoes or the chickpeas, stuff it into the Puri,
dunk it into either the sour and spicy water or the sweet water and then you eat it. Alright guys,
we are ready. Breakfast of champions Pani Puri challenge. We have over 200 Pani Puris or 200
exactly, right? 200 exactly. You know I usually do like 35. Today I'm gonna try to go for 45.
And this is actually your mother's catering company, right? Yeah. Mikashe's Kitchen. Yeah. And
this is one of the best-selling products. This is the best-selling product. This is the best-selling.
So right here we have sweet. No, this is the sour and spicy water. Okay. And then this is the sweet
water. Okay. So how do we do it? We just open it and pour it, right? Yeah. So one, you're gonna have two
bowls, one for each. You know, once it's full, then we'll fill in whatever you want, either
chickpeas or potatoes, dunk it and we go. Yeah. Right? I'm excited. Look at that. So not too much,
right? Or like that? Fill it up, fill it up. Gotta be careful. My tummy's gonna feel...
Oh man, it's gonna be exciting. I'm so happy.
I did this in Miami recently. Yeah? You have no idea. Yeah, yeah. I went to a restaurant,
the guy was like... Oh, a Pakistani restaurant or an Indian one? It was an Indian restaurant
and they had like a million for me. They got like a table just full and the guy there like,
you know, just giving it. Okay, we are ready to chow down on about 200. 200 money.
Okay, so just grab one each. Yeah, let's go. Let's go. Actually, this, right? This one.
Oh yeah, you're right. Okay, so then we fill it, right? Just take some potatoes with your hands or
chickpeas, whatever you prefer. Stuff it in. Okay. And you can mix, right, if you want to?
Yeah, you can. I mean, we have had people do that. Okay. Even though we've never done it ourselves.
Don't fill it too much. Yeah. That's a secret. And so which is which? And then you just dip it in
like this. Dip it in. Dip it in.
Dip it in even more. Let it pick up more like... All the way? Yeah, yeah. That's it. Take it out
now. Okay. Go for it. Wow. What a burst. Nice masalas. I love the pani. So it's basically just
masalas and water, right? Yeah. Let's keep going. Oh, that's going to happen. That's
going to happen a lot, right? Yeah. Let's get enough chickpeas. Four or five. Dunk it again.
Go for the sweet water. Don't forget to do the count. That one doesn't count. We're at three,
right? Yeah. Who's counting? Nice potatoes. Well, I'm counting. I'm counting. So I'm gonna
go with sweet water this time. Dunk it. Wow, look at that. That's so much better.
So very similar. Yeah. It just, it feels like it has tamarind. It is. Yeah, yeah. That is what it
is. Tamarind and jaggery. And jaggery. And I personally like the potatoes more. And look at
this. There's a nice little chili there. Oh, yeah. You'll find a lot of those. A lot of those? Yeah.
Get a lot of that. I lost it.
Four, right? Yeah.
This is so satisfying. I love this. Oh, that's spicy. What chili is that? It's green chili,
huh? Yeah. Yeah, I'm gonna go almost all sweet. Really? Did that hit you that hard? Oh, it's so
good. You can find pani puri vendors throughout the day here or usually it's like in the night
time, right? But you can find them anytime after around lunchtime. Around lunchtime. Yeah. After
and around lunchtime. Because this is not a breakfast item. This is more of a midday snack.
Yeah. Right? I had six. You had six already? I think so. Don't worry. You gotta count there.
We'll do that. Repeat.
So, can you find pani puri all over Pakistan? Or just Karachi? Yeah.
More or less all over the country. Okay. In some places, they call it gol gappa.
So like gol gappa. Gol gappa. Yeah. And in some places, they call it pani puri. But they'll
understand both if you say it to them. Yeah. And we have a special song for gol gappa too.
Yeah? Yeah. A special song. Gol gappa. Yeah.
Both these are delicious. Potatoes? So nice. This one's like half broken. This is a halfer.
It happens.
Again. Hope that happens. Yeah, that's gonna happen. Yeah, I mean, it's part of the
journey, right? So, usually, the way it works on the streets is you just tell him,
hey, you'll give me pani puri. And you just keep going, right? Until you tell him to stop.
So, you'll find them with carts on the road. You'll find shops. You'll find roadside vendors.
Nice. And is this a big thing in like weddings and stuff or parties? People do it? It's more of
a high tea item. Okay. Like evening snack-ish. Because this also comes under chart. You know
chart, right? Yeah. So, this comes under chart. And yeah. So, it's like a high tea snack kind
of item. But yeah, some wedding functions, you will find this. Oh, you will find pani puri as
well. I wish I had a place like this in Miami for too much. Like my own vendor. I was thinking of
doing like a puri place. Really? Yeah. There's not enough people in Miami, like Indian population
or Pakistani population for it, you know? It's so good. The sweet water. Wow. So, I think the
only thing that would be like a cool extra is having like chilies on the side. You just add.
We do that, you know? You do that. And if you want, we can actually, we've got them cut. You
got them cut? I wasn't sure what level you'd be able to handle it. So, I don't want somebody to
feel so bad. We're eating a lot today. You had a 10? 10? I don't even know. Don't worry about the
count. When it tastes so good, no need to count. No need to count. I'm gonna mix the chickpeas.
So good. Sweet water. Absolutely phenomenal. Yeah. It's so enjoyable.
What an incredible chat. You could actually like make a like a puri bowl, you know? Just
crack puris, mix everything and just have it in a bowl. Let me find some more chilies here.
Definitely, if you have some more chilies, why not, right?
We're going through fast. Some more chilies would be nice.
Thank you. Thank you. Your wife's so sweet, man.
How many you got? Any idea? I'm at 12. I'm definitely at 12. Yeah, I think I've crossed 15 too.
Going so fast here. Nice masalas, man.
Yeah, when you get the chili and the potatoes, nice heat, right? Yeah.
It's just cracking. I'm in love with this, man. So good. It's a morning world sponge. Yeah.
I love this. The sounds, the crows. You gotta be careful. They'll come down and get some of the
food, right? Yeah. Go on in on the good stuff. Let's just put the knot above our heads.
He's a big crow. Yeah, right there. Right there. Oh yeah, here. We'll just put it right here.
All right, so here we go. Just got a little bit of this. Throw it in. It's nice sweet water.
Oh, you like drown it in here in the bowl. Why don't you top your sweet water bowl up?
So when's the first time you guys tried pani puri? When you were super young, right?
I was super young. Yeah, definitely. My first pani puri, I was 32.
But most people in like America have never tried it. Wouldn't have tried it in their entire lives.
Yeah, unless you travel to one of these countries that, you know, it's common,
you know, they find it. Even at restaurants, like it's not like they don't have it there.
Indian restaurants? Yeah, it's not just like available, you know. Okay.
Most Indian restaurants, they never have, they don't have a lot of street food.
So grab some chaps, you know. Okay. Just like deconstructed samosas and stuff.
Okay, okay. Finding like a like actual like pani puri like this, really hard.
Unless you go to like Patel Brothers, like a supermarket, a big supermarket in America,
and then you go, you can actually find them ready. Okay. Yeah, I guess it isn't easy,
is it? It isn't the easiest to fry these puris. No, right?
Yeah, so the trick to eating a lot of them is to not stuff them too much. The pani, yes,
but the stuffing, see if you have a vendor, like stuffs it ridiculous, you'll eat, you know,
a limited amount. But usually they don't do that because they want you to eat
a lot. And on the street, how much, how much is like a, I don't know, 10 crores.
So you guys went to Flamingo, right? Yeah. Yeah. So at Flamingo, I'd say a plate of
seven, six or seven puris set you back about 120 rupees. And maybe on the road from someone who's
doing it off a cart, it'll probably about, probably be about 60, 70 rupees, maybe? 70, 80 rupees.
So what's the exchange rate now for a dollar? Sorry, my math is off. It's like 50 cents
for a 10 or a dozen. 50 cents for like a dozen? 10 or a dozen. 50 cents would be for um... 10
puris or a dozen puris. So for like a dollar, two dollars, you're stuffed. Yeah. Yeah, definitely.
We're going too fast, huh? Oh yeah, we are.
Wow. Love the tamarind.
This is actually quite a lot of tamarind also, but a lot of other spices as well. Oh yeah. For me,
like my favorite chutneys are tamarind, but also coconut. Okay. Oh, that's so good.
I'm adding a lot of chilies here. Good. Can we get some tissues here?
Break? No break. No break. Just keep going. Keep going. Oh, early morning pani puri.
Beautiful day, huh? Not a cloud in the sky. Yeah. I'm surprised. The weather, no? It's like perfect
every single day. Usually like this at this time of year, right? It's actually starting to get hotter.
Yeah? Yeah. Just give your water a little mix. Okay. The spices will settle down in the bottom.
Perfect. A little bit of that. Cheers. Cheers, guys. Cheers. Cheers. Cheers. So satisfying.
So at this point, I forgot the count. Yeah, you're gonna have to
go back and check. Yeah, yeah, I'll check and count every single puri that we've had.
I mean, this is 200. I think we've gone through around 60 so far. Maybe 20 each.
At least 60. Yeah. I love the potatoes. So good. Hot, hot, hot.
Whoa. Can't even get it in. It's pretty cool in the morning. I'm getting there.
Yeah? Yeah. I know. I think we should add it to the breakfast.
Should definitely add it, right? So I might be starting him an Indian
slash Pakistani because my friend, he's like a restaurant owner in Miami. Yeah. He's a Pakistani
descent from here. And we might start a restaurant. It's more just like online like app.
And it's more. It's a delivery service. Delivery, yeah. Just straight delivery,
industrial kitchen. Okay, yeah. And this is one of the items, you know. Oh.
Because obviously, our main thing is showing people more the street food aspect.
The things that are easier to eat and also like having dahi puri,
sleepy yogurt puri, which is great as well. You know, obviously you just you send the puris
ready with everything on the side, right? Yeah. Because I always, I always thinking like,
what would people really want to eat, you know? Besides, you think the butter chicken and um.
Wow. Luckily, we're not eating for a few hours.
No, so when you're eating all day long, it's hard. People are like, watch this video and they're
gonna be like, and he saw, and he ate the next, like all the next stuff. Today we're going like
seven places, right? Today you've got another five or six. Online, right? Online. Luckily,
it starts like at 12, right? Gonna start right now. Let's go for some haircut. I need a haircut.
Oh, like a pro here.
Mix this up, right? Yeah, it stays, the massage stays on the bottom, right? Yeah.
To be honest, I'm starting to hit a wall.
Made me full. I was just gonna say that. I think I'm almost done. Yeah, I'm almost done too.
Not easy. So, I'll see who the winner is. I think we're closer to having finished about
120. Okay. 110. Yeah, at least 110. Between the three of us.
About 30 each. Who ate the most? Definitely 30 each. Well, I know he ate two less than us.
Yeah, yeah. In the beginning, you started fast. Yeah. Started really fast.
Oh, I'm done with the chilies, man. It's getting to me now.
We can finish that, huh? Yeah. I'm gonna have like two or three more. Let's finish that one too.
Yeah, I guess we should just finish that, right? They're ready to eat, right? Really? I don't think
I can do this. No? Let's get an extra like what? 10, 12? Yeah, we've got about 10 here.
And now he's in the sun. He's like cooking it. You haven't had the spice. I had a bunch of chilies.
Here. Thank you. I'm gonna quit with the chilies.
You guys eat this regularly? More biryani, right? Yeah, yeah, definitely.
Like I told you, I can have biryani for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For me, my favorites are
dosa, pari puri, biryani. Sort of in that order. I'm done. You're done?
So that's the rib. So you've got six more left.
We'll finish. We'll finish. And then another 75, 70, 75 if you want to go for it. No, no.
If I wasn't eating the rest of the day, I would.
And it's not, I mean, it's not so filling. Obviously, you eat this many, but the puri
itself is not so bad. It's more the oil that fills you up. Yeah, definitely. And this too.
And this, right? Yeah. It's so much thicker, right?
I can't believe he's still going on. I know, I know. He's still going for the gold.
He doesn't look like he's going to stop anytime soon.
He's going to limit himself eating today.
Last one? Last one. I'm going to stuff this one a little more than usual. I'll get this,
put some chilies in here, and some chickpeas. All the way. All the way, man. All the way.
Yeah, this is a big one. Let's pour it on. Ready, my man? How beautiful that is.
Let's take the last one together. I think he won. Yeah, I'm pretty sure he did.
Have the rest. Have the rest. I'm full. Well, that's it. I mean, that was so satisfying.
I am stuffed. I need a big break from eating for a while. I think I could run all the way
to wherever I needed to be. Oh my god, I'm melty right now. The sun is beaming on us. Well, guys,
I hope you enjoyed this pani puri challenge. It was epic. I mean, a little different from the
usual on the street. We did it more, you know, relaxing at home. Home cooked pani puri. Yeah.
I'm pretty sure this guy won. You probably beat me as well. I don't know if I ate that
much because I don't feel like I ate so much. But yeah, I want to limit myself because today's
going to be a long one. And yeah, pani puri is, you know, a local street food snack. You can find
it all over Pakistan as well as India. And it is fantastic. You mix it with either potatoes,
chickpeas, and sweet or I guess more sour, right? Yeah. And there's other options, right? Some
vendors give you like four or five different varieties. They have more ingredients. Sometimes
they put like spice, sometimes they put like hot sauce. I mean, I've seen a lot of different
variations. Yeah. So guys, I hope you enjoyed this pani puri challenge in partnership with my
friends at Menaki. If you did, please give me a thumbs up, leave me a comment below,
