The Over 40 Capsule Wardrobe That Makes You Look Expensive (without even trying!)

And certainly one thing that I think we can all agree on is that we want to look expensive, but we don't want to spend a bajillion dollars trying to do that. So what does looking expensive really mean? I'm just talking about looking chic, looking timeless, looking elegant, really just looking like that best version of you. So today I'm diving into the 10 pieces that I truly believe every single woman, especially if you're over the age of 40, needs to look chic, to look timeless, to look polished, to look elegant. And I really filtered this and I really did. I did the work for you guys so that you kind of are getting a little bit of that sort of like Victoria Beckham now, not some of her looks, right? Victoria Beckham now kind of matched with like a 90s minimal. So basically it's like the 90s were 30 years ago, guys. I'm 51. It feels like it was yesterday, but it was 30 years ago. But you can still look at pictures from the 90s and go, wow, that still looks current. Why? Because it's timeless. So that's what we're talking about here. We're not talking about chasing trends. We're talking about how to always look good, how to always look put together, and what are the pieces that you absolutely need in your closet in order to get those results. Okay, here are the 10 capsule items that you absolutely must have. Number one is what I'm wearing right now. The perfect white tee. A white tee that completely flatters your body, your body type. And I would like to say even bonus points if it's not a bajillion dollars. Now, this one that I'm wearing, which in my opinion is the perfect white tee, is the one from Uniqlo. I think this thing costs $15. The material is insane. It's just the perfect thickness. I live in Miami. It's hot here all the time. It's not sheer. I just have like a little bra underneath here. But I can also wear this just with like a nipple cover and be fine. I love where it sits on the neck. And truly, when I put this t-shirt on, I just feel like I look like I tried. Whether I wear it with trousers, with jeans, with a skirt, like you name it, this is the perfect layering piece. This is the kind of thing that you want to buy multiples. And like I said, it's $15. So everything that I'm talking about, all the pieces, I'm going to do my best. Let's talk about this. And even if it's not the items that I have, I will try to find really similar ones to make it just really easy if you need to add any of these items to your wardrobe. The next item that you absolutely need to have, and it's very seasonal right now, is a slim-fitting black turtleneck, okay? I think I've had my black turtleneck, oh my gosh, I don't even know how many years. I couldn't even tell you where I got it from. Now, I would like to upgrade mine to a cashmere one. You can certainly do that. Mine, I think, is just a cotton blend one. But you want it to be one that really fits you well because, again, it's a bit of a layering piece for you. And it's definitely so 90s minimal. Again, you can wear it with a million different things. We'll get to the outfit combinations just in a little bit. So I don't really like just a cotton black turtleneck. I don't know. I feel like that kind of gives me like school uniform vibes because my daughter wears like a white one sometimes when it's winter here in Miami. But I'm talking about something that's knit, whether it be a cashmere blend. Again, Uniqlo has some great ones. Intimisme has some great ones. Even H&M, probably the one that I have, it's so old. It's probably from H&M. And it's just, it fits me really well. It's not too thick where I can still tuck it into pants without having like bulging around. But it is a perfect layering piece to give you that 90s minimal look. And again, something that I'm wearing right now, which is, you can do ivory. I think that would be really chic. But also, I think, and I've talked about this in other videos, camel always reads expensive. Camel always reads luxe. So some kind of an ivory or a camel colored sweater. And especially with the items that we're talking about here, it's just going to give you a little bit of extra interest and it ups that luxe factor. Now, I also think cashmere is really the way to go if it's in your budget. But don't sleep on quints, okay? I have talked about quints before. I love quints so much. Mine is from quints. This was actually gifted to me from them. But I have bought many pieces since trying their products of like, wow, this is really, really good quality. And especially for cashmere. I will say that the cashmere that they have at Uniqlo, I was just in Boston recently with my family and I noticed that they had cashmere sweaters. It didn't feel like cashmere. So I don't know if it was a cashmere blend or what, but it wasn't great. So, you know, this is the kind of thing, if you do want to invest in cashmere, touch it. Make sure that it feels nice and soft. So whether you're wearing the sweater or doing what I'm doing today, just kind of throwing over the shoulders, this really just ups that element. If you don't want to do cashmere, that's okay. But try to get the best quality that you can. So it's something that you're going to have for a long time because a capsule wardrobe is not something that you want to buy every single season. Next up is a tailored black blazer. We have kind of a color scheme going. This is on purpose. Okay. So a black blazer. Now I have more black blazers than a girl possibly needs, but there's a reason for that because some I like really slouchy and oversized. Some I like a little bit more of a tailored fit here. Some are a little bit more crop, some are longer, right? But in this capsule situation, I would say sort of like something that you can layer with. So it's not super, super oversized. You're not giving that boyfriend look, but it's also not like so tight that you can't put anything underneath it. I love the one that I'm going to feature in this video. I got it vintage. It's vintage Donna Karan. It's part of a suit and it's more of like a tuxedo jacket. So because of the satin lapels, it just ups every look. Even if I was wearing like ripped jeans, it would look like, wow, that girl's really chic and together. So again, it's just like a little outfit trick that you need in your wardrobe. Number five, the perfect pair of jeans for you. Now I was going to say perfect wide leg jeans, because again, if we're filtering through that sort of Victoria Beckham kind of filter, which I love doing, her jeans almost always tend to be nice, big, wide leg, almost like a trouser fit jean. I personally think that's an incredibly flattering look. I am only five foot two for reference, and I generally wear about a size four in jeans. Of course, you know your body best. So maybe for you, it's more of a straight leg jean or a bootcut. I mean, you cannot go wrong with a pair of Levi's 501s to give you that sort of like timeless French girl look. But personally, I like more of like a trouser fit and a wider baggier fit. So you don't have to spend a lot of money. My favorite jeans, H&M, they're usually about $50 a pair. They are durable. They last for years and years and years. And then again, I can play with different sizes, fits, and colors. But in this instance, you want the color that you are going to wear. So some of you, it might be a really dark wash. For myself, I like this sort of like mid wash. This is the color that I'm liking now. But again, it's what's going to look the best with items that you have. Next up is black tailored trousers. Fit here is absolutely everything. You know, I have some pairs of black trousers that I almost never wear. I probably should really do a good edit in some of like the basics in my closet right now. But the ones that I reach for the most, again, were not incredibly expensive. They are from Zara and I got them tailored to fit me perfectly. So a little hot tip. If you like a wider leg jean, and especially if you're a fitness girly like me, what I will do is maybe size up. So usually I'm a four. I would get a six and then get the waist taken in and then the length taken up. Five foot two, I have to get the length taken up. But you want the pair of black trousers to be perfect fit for you. Maybe for you, it's more of a straight or like a cigarette kind of silhouette. But again, it's about what's going to work the best for you, for your body type and with the items that you have. And next up, we can't do 90s minimalism without a slip skirt. This is sort of what I'd like to think of as like a more fun item. And I would think of the color being most important here. So I'm going to be using a champagne colored slip skirt. I also just got a beautiful chocolate brown one that I cannot believe how amazing the quality and the fit is for the price point. But you could certainly do black here. So you could do black, you could do brown, or you could do in my case, like a champagne color. The reason why we want to do this, again, we want to be able to mix and match and put as many outfit combinations together. So you do want some element of a color scheme, okay? Mine is from Amazon. Literally, it's from Amazon. But Aritzia is a great place where you could get something. You could get something from Intimissimi. J.Crew probably is a great option as well. So again, I'll leave as many different options as I can linked here on YouTube shopping and also in the comment pinned down below. So next up is the item that I wish I could wear so much more often. But again, because I live in Miami. But sometimes I get to pull it out. And that is a structured wool coat. Now, we went to London last year in the springtime, and I bought this coat. And it's just like every time I wear it, I just feel so stylish, so chic, so put together. And that's the power of having the right pieces. So mine is vintage. I got it on the RealReal, and it's Ralph Lauren. You can get other options at maybe Kos, Mango, right? H&M. You don't have to spend a lot of money. And like I said, I got mine vintage, right? On the RealReal. But my point is I would get something that has as much structure as possible, has a little bit of interest. And I would definitely go either black or camel for this one. Again, going with our capsule theme. Now, here's one where it was tricky. So for the shoes, I'm doing it sort of seasonal at this time of year. I would say you need actually three pairs. I was trying to keep it to two, but let me explain why. So number one, you need a heeled black bootie, OK? That's what I have. Mine are old, very old, from Zara. I got them even back when I lived in New York. So I've had these for a really, really long time. You also want a black, low-heeled Chelsea boot. That's going to be great for you to run around, get a coffee. If you're doing touristy things, if you're just like living your day-to-day and you don't want to be wearing a heel, a black, low boot is going to be great for this. And then I also think a knee-high boot. Now, I'm wearing the champagne-colored skirt. So I have a pair of sort of camel-y colored boots. Again, it works with the color scheme. If you're doing a black slip skirt, then I would say black. So that's where you can kind of play a little bit with the colors here. But you don't want to wear a champagne slip skirt with a black ankle boot. That would just cut off the line and not be a good thing. So we'll talk about that in a minute. So three pairs of boots here. But that's all you need. And then with accessories, of course, we have to have a place to put our things. And I just wanted to put this in because, again, I want this to be very, very realistic. This is how I pack when I'm going away. And these are the things that, even if you're not traveling, if you just want to look really chic, elegant, put together in your day-to-day life, no matter where you live, you want two bags. One is like your everyday bag. Now, mine is brown suede. Again, I live in Miami. You know, suede can be tricky, especially if you live somewhere where you're getting snow and rain. So maybe you want something leather. You could do black. You could do brown. Whatever just floats your boat the most. Mine is a Chanel brown suede. And then you want some kind of an evening clutch. I have a million clutches. But for this instance, I'm going to go with my black one. I just got this on Koss. It is so cool. It's got this structure to it. I don't even know how to describe it. But you can scrunch it up. You can make it longer. And it kind of holds whatever shape. It's a very cool one. But again, just anything minimal. I have sort of one of those very slim-fitting, like a YSL black one that used to always be like my black evening clutch. So whatever you feel most comfortable. You do not have to spend a million dollars. Amazon has some incredible options. Of course, I'll leave some of those linked down below. And I like to think of your signature jewelry. Keep it minimal. So I always wear my rings and some kind of an earring. You might want to put a necklace or something. But I would say really keep it very, very simple and straightforward. If you're a gold girlie, maybe a pair of gold hoops. Maybe one gold necklace. And that's it. Whatever rings you wear. So keep it really minimal. But of course, you can have maybe two pairs of earrings. And then whatever your signature pieces are. And that's going to make you look chic. And it's going to be so easy. This is look number one. And this is what I like to call airport chic because this is truly what I wear every single time I go to the airport. And it's just a formula. And it makes my life so much easier. So it's the perfect white t-shirt, a pair of jeans, wide leg jeans that are comfy. OK, I'm not going to feel like a stuffed sausage if I was getting on a plane. And then a black blazer. That black blazer because of the satin lapels. Again, you look so much more put together. And then I have the Chelsea boots. Those are the low heeled boots here. So I am comfy. I am cozy. And I put my everyday brown bag here. I just love the look of this. I love brown and black together. And I feel comfy. I feel put together. It's nothing fancy or groundbreaking. But again, it's a formula. And it makes life easy. Moving into look number two, my New York City girl's heart absolutely loves this. The minimal all black look. So we've got that black turtleneck. We've got the black blazer, black wide trousers, and the heeled boots. And I love that you can, of course, just wear a blazer like a blazer. Or you could be a fashion girl-et and just drape the blazer over your shoulders. And it just really gives this like, I'm a boss. I am bossing it up. I know what's going on here. I am chic. I've got it going on. I'm just that girl. Next, we've got luxe neutrals for look number three. So we have that gorgeous champagne skirt with that camel sweater. So we've got a tonal bit going on here. Plus the brown leather heeled boots here that are knee high. And then we threw that jacket over it. For me, the star of the show here truly is the jacket. The jacket just gives you life. You look chic. You look put together. It just makes you, it makes everything an outfit. In fact, I wore this jacket when I was in Boston over Thanksgiving. And I got stopped on the street by these young girls that were like, by the way, you look great. And I was literally just wearing jeans and a t-shirt and like the low boots and this jacket. But again, the jacket is what makes it a look. All right, moving into look number four. This is what I think of as Victoria Beckham off-duty denim. So wide leg denim with the heel boot. We want to add a little height here. The black turtleneck and then the black jacket over it. And again, here I went with the clutch. Why? Because I wanted to. You could certainly do the daytime bag. But because this clutch is so big, I feel like it just adds a little bit of extra interest. It actually holds quite a lot. And then again, sunglasses because you are giving Victoria Beckham vibes here. But again, how chic does this look? And it's very simple pieces that you probably already own. I love this look so much. Look number five is what I like to call the soft glam daytime look. This is perfect for a lunch with friends or if you are working in an office. This is very like put together but still casual. So I have the perfect white tee. Did I do that bra tuck trick that we do? Yes, I did. So there's no lumps, no bumps. And I just tuck the t-shirt into my bra here. Satin skirt, the knee-high boots. And then I did a little fashion girly tip here, which is very of the moment, where I'm using my bag that has an actual strap, a shoulder bag. And I'm holding it like a clutch, which is a great way to sort of just mix up your look a little bit. But let's just talk about that. We love that. All right. Next, we're going into quiet luxury work look. I surprisingly loved this look. And I say surprisingly because it's just that camel cashmere sweater with the wide-leg black pants. But it's the element of adding in the brown again with the boots that I really feel like made this look what it is. It just pulls it all together. And again, it's not just basic black boots, you know, a little black toe sticking out. I love this. And then bringing in the brown of the daytime bag, it just really, you know, is giving you that polished, put-together look. And I just love this. I, you know, I've never worked in a corporate office ever in my life, but I really do like dressing like I am the boss. And you know what? You are the boss, girl. This you've already seen because I was wearing it at the beginning of this video. So it's the perfect white tee with those wide-leg denim. And then I do have the black boots on here. So you could definitely do this with the Chelsea boots if you want. But that cashmere sweater just thrown over the shoulder, this is such a Miami girl's trick. It's like this time of year for Miami, you know, it's not cold, but it's also sometimes gets a little bit damp. So just throwing a sweater over your shoulders kind of gives you that sort of like put-together interesting look. But you know, you're not really wearing a sweater, but you kind of are wearing a sweater. I love this. All right, next up, we've got what I like to consider a cozy night out. So you're dressed, but like you could go straight from the office in this look. So it's that satin skirt with the brown knee-high boots and then the black jacket. But guess what, girl? I don't have anything on underneath that jacket. What I did do is I used some of the Hollywood fashion tape. So I didn't want my girls to be sticking out at you, but I love this. Look at that shape it's giving me. This blazer, it's again all about fit, right? So it's giving you a little bit of like a waist, a little bit of a booty, but it's not inappropriate at all. You could definitely do this with a brown bag, or you could do it with a black clutch like I'm doing here. I love this. Black and brown together, you truly cannot ever go wrong. Next, we've got, you know, just weekend luxe. Such an easy, easy look here. Chelsea boots, wide leg jeans, and the camel sweater. But unlike every other time, we're leaving the sweater untucked, which actually was a trend in 2025, was the untucked shirt look. I like this because honestly, it's different for me. I really am a tucker. I like tucking things in. I like giving more of a waist, but this is just like the perfect, like I'm just hanging out. I'm meeting a friend for a matcha. I'm maybe running errands, but I don't want to look like a total slob. This is a great look, and it feels good because that cashmere and the jeans are really comfortable. It just feels good on your body, and you look great. Ugh, this look. This is quintessential cool girl work uniform. And even if you're a girl like me who likes to cosplay, that I'm going to the office, we love this. Black trousers. I'm using the heeled boots here. Perfect white tee. And again, that camel sweater thrown over your shoulders. I like using that brown daytime bag, but notice how I'm kind of scrunching her up a little bit. So just to give it a little bit of interest. Again, play with your clothes. Or you could just wear it regularly. Who cares? But either way, you're going to look fantastic. Throw on some shades, honey, and you are giving. I am that girl. I need a promotion. I am getting things done, and I'm looking good while I'm doing it. Talk about tonal perfection here because that is what we are giving here. So we have our camel sweater, but I did a little half tuck here. Some people don't like a half tuck. If you don't like a half tuck, don't do it, my friend. And then I've got that satin skirt here. But what I love is that the way I tucked it, we're not getting lumps and bumps or anything weird here. We've got those brown boots, so it's giving me some warmth. It's giving me interest. Let's talk texture here. Cashmere, satin, leather, three different kinds of texture. You can't tell me that this doesn't look expensive, right? And that's the beauty of playing with tonal dressing. And if you throw in texture too, honey, you are going to look like a million bucks. This is my homage to Carolyn Bessette Kennedy because this was very much in alignment with some of her famous looks here. So we've got just that very minimal 90s black turtleneck, OK? This is like a cotton one with that satin skirt and then the brown leather knee-high boots. There is something so chic and timeless about having a high boot sort of tucked under a midi-length skirt like this that I just think is so chic, so effortless, so expensive, so gore genie. I love this. So again, you are looking polished. You are looking put together, but it's all really easy pieces here. And then all we did here is we threw that coat on. But again, do you see how it just changes things up? It gives you just even more elevation here by putting on that jacket. Obviously, you can wear that jacket at any moment here. And if you live in cold weather like I used to when I lived in New York, you need a jacket, obviously. But I just love how when you have the right jacket, it just makes the look. You know, my father actually used to work in sales. I'm sure you're surprised by that, right? It's my father. And he would always say, Tracy, it's my jacket that is the outfit because we lived in Massachusetts and it was always absolutely freezing. So he had a million gorgeous wool coats because that was the only way he could kind of change up his look. So take it from John Campoli, a wool coat is really it. And this is our sexy night out look. Oh, we love this so much. 14 looks, right? Black satin blazer or the satin lapel blazer. The black wide leg trousers. These are not the trousers that came with the suit, but I love these two together. And then the high boots. And again, I have nothing on underneath the jacket. I just have that Hollywood fashion tape. The only look that I put the necklace on was this one. I just felt like she needed a little something. You know, if you have girls and cleavage, maybe you don't. But if you're a girly like me, you need a little something. And again, this is the perfect, perfect like night out. I would wear this to dinner. I would wear this to drinks with friends. And again, this is just putting you into your power, right? You are a woman. You are over 40. You like have done your thing and you are still doing your thing. And you look absolutely amazing. So I really hope that you enjoyed this capsule wardrobe collection.
