After spending two incredible days in the Surinamese capital of Paramaribo, I was on the move to my next destination, Albina! Come along with me as my friend and guide Imro takes me east to the border with French Guyana and I try some amazing Surinamese Indonesian street food along the way!
We started off with a ride through Paramaribo’s downtown area. It’s the oldest and most historical area of town and boasts lots of Dutch architecture. On our left was the Suriname River riverside, which is where the market is. We headed across a huge brige above the river to a different district within Suriname. Its capital is Albina, our next destination!
The roads are really well paved. They were done within the last 9 years. Before that, they were rocky, dirt roads. Because they’re paved, they’re really smooth and cut your travel time by a lot! We passed through the town of Tamarejo, which is 95% Javanese. There, we stopped at a place called Warung Lenny, which sells Javanese street food.
There were at least 20 different things to choose from! I started with some pommesitair juice, which tasted very healthy, almost like aloe vera juice. It was very refreshing! Then I got my feast, including noodles, two rices, beans, sprouts, peanut dressing, a spicy chili sauce, fried banana, and chicken.
The banana with the peanut sauce was delicious! It was crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. The sauce was creamy and spicy, while the chili sauce was crazy spicy! I don’t recommend that one. But the peanut sauce was so yummy and made the fried banana feel like a dessert. The Indo food in Suriname was blowing my mind!
The fried chicken was incredibly fresh and so different from chicken that has been frozen. It was juicier, more tender, and the skin was crunchier. I loved it with the peanut sauce!
The noodles were a little peppery and oily and reminded me of buckwheat noodles. They were a little thick and softer than al dente. The sprouts were crunchy and fresh, and the green beans were also super fresh! There were also some smaller green beans and some rice with soy sauce. I added the peanut sauce to the rice. The chunks of peanuts with the greens was phenomenal! I also added some to the veg, which took it to the next level!
I finished up by dumping the rest of the peanut sauce into the rice and veg and mixing it together. The sweetness and spice was an interesting combination I’d never had before and I loved it! This was some of the best food I’d had in Suriname so far!
From there, we headed on. We found a roadside hut where a woman was selling vegetables including eggplant, beans, and a bitter melon. The melon was bitter and crunchy. We moved on and saw lots of bush along the side of the road. We crossed another bridge and stopped at another roadside hut, where I tried a shot of 90 proof alcohol! It’s an aphrodisiac and was super strong! I also drank fresh coconut water and ate some fresh coconut meat!
After riding for a little longer, we stopped again and got some fresh acai puree in plastic bags. It was super thick and earthy and got all over me as I tried to drink it! We drove into a foggy rain storm as we continued deeper into the rainforest. We could barely see anything but it only lasted 2 minutes!
After passing some traditional, residential buildings, shacks, supermarkets, a school, and lots of jungle, we arrived in the small town of Albina! It was along the river, and across from us was French Guyana. From there, we’d take a ferry north to the Atlantic Ocean to reach Galibi.
I hope you enjoyed joining me on my 4-hour journey to Albina! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up, leave a comment, and subscribe so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!

I'm gonna have to try some of the chili. Just a little bit, right? It's crazy spicy.
What's up everyone? This is David Hoffman from David's Bin here in beautiful, hot
Paramaribo Suriname, the capital Suriname. Today I'm actually leaving the capital and I'm driving
over to the east to the border with French Guiana to the town of Albina. It's like a two-hour drive
and once we get there we're gonna have some delicious Surinamian food. Jenny Tours,
let's go! We're leaving Paramaribo and as you can see we're going through the downtown area.
This is like the oldest, most historical area. A lot of Dutch architecture here, wooden buildings
and then over here to the left we have the riverside. The riverside is where the market
is along the Suriname river. There I bought a few things. I mean it's basically craft market.
I didn't find any masks but a few different things that you can buy there and yeah we're
about to cross the Suriname river and as soon as we cross the Suriname river, where do we enter?
Yes, we go to district Camovena. District Camovena. Yes. And what's the capital of the district?
Albina? Albina. Okay. Yeah. So we're about to enter a different district and that's basically
a different state within Suriname and the capital of it is Albina and that's where we're going.
Man, I actually love the heat but this is like scorching man. No, this is the bridge,
yeah it's like 1,500 meters long and 52 meters high. Wow. Yes. And this crosses the Suriname river.
We are in district Camovena and we go to Albina, this is district Marwene and we stop there.
All right, what about lunch? Where are we going to have lunch? We have lunch here. Where? Tamarejo.
Tamarejo. What's Tamarejo? 10 minutes. It's 10 minutes? Yes. It's okay though? Yeah, yeah.
Tamarejo. As you can see, the roads here are very, very good. So what he was telling me is that,
you know, Imero is from Galibi, so all the way where we're going today and he was telling me
that only nine years ago this road was like a dirt road, you know, lots of rocks. It took four hours
to do 142 kilometers, now it takes under two hours to do the same thing because obviously now it's a
paved road. It's like a perfect road. I haven't seen one pothole. It's like beautiful, very smooth
and that just shows you how much this country has advanced in only 10 years. I can't even imagine
how it was a hundred years ago. Just jungle. Yes. Okay, we are now in Tamarejo and Tamarejo is a
Japanese village and we are here now at Warung Leni and we're gonna eat some Japanese food.
Javanese people from the island Java in Indonesia. Huge population here and yeah, we're gonna go to
Warung. Warung is basically like a restaurant. It's like an open-air restaurant with a person
or a vendor selling, you know, street food. So we're gonna get some of that and I think we made
it here. We're gonna go to, I think it's called Warung Leni. Warung Leni? Yeah. Perfect, let's go
to Warung Leni. The food here looks incredible. I can see everybody here eating. Oh, it looks
phenomenal. I love Indo food. I have to go to Indonesia ASAP. Oh, here we go. What do they got?
Wow, so many things. They have like 20 different things to choose from. Man, what do we try? What
do you want to try? We're gonna try the telo. This is the cassava. Okay. Yes, with the salt fish.
Perfect. Yeah, it's okay. Yeah, yeah. And it's amazing. Maybe one of this shrimp. So we're
starting off our lunch right now with this pomesitar juice.
What is this? Very green. It tastes almost like aloe. Like aloe vera.
Very nice. Very healthy. Super fruit. Never heard of this one. Oh, that is great. With the heat here,
you have to drink as many juices as possible. All right, so here we have our Indonesian feast.
We have noodles, two different rices, lamb beans, sprouts. We have like a soy sauce,
we have a peanut dressing, we have a spicy chili sauce, and then we have fried banana,
and we have chicken. So fried chicken. So I'm gonna think I'm gonna start with this,
the fried banana. It's so delicious. I don't know if fried banana is a big thing in Indonesia.
I know it is here because they have so many bananas. So the best thing to do with this,
get some of the peanut sauce. Like it's just a good amount right there.
The taste is so delicious. Fried, soft in the middle.
The peanut sauce is actually really spicy, this one. It's like creamy and spicy.
Oh, wow. I'm gonna have to try some of the chili. Just a little bit, right?
That's crazy spicy. So get some more of that peanut, put it throughout.
It's so delicious. This peanut dressing, spicy peanut dressing. This actually feels like a
dessert because it's a banana, fried banana. Amazing. I gotta say, Indo food is blowing my
mind. Like it's blowing me away. Now I'm gonna try some of this. This is basically just fried
chicken, right? Yep. Oh, wow. Super fresh. Oh, what a difference. It's so different to eat
rice chicken over eating any frozen chicken. Just juicier, the skin is crunchier.
Get a little wild.
I'm all about the peanut dressings.
Wow. This is so good. I've been eating chicken all my life, obviously, like most of you have.
Gotta say, this is phenomenal chicken. That balled off the bone. Wow. That was so tasty.
And next, I think I'm just gonna dive in here and get some of the noodles.
Oh, wow. Look at that. Lots of nice noodles. I haven't tried noodles here yet. Whoa.
Oh, wow. A little peppery. Nice oily. Oh, noodles for the win.
These noodles actually remind me of like buckwheat noodles. A little thick, a little softer than
al dente. That is so good. And yeah, I mean, what else we got here? So we have another piece of
fried banana, another piece of chicken, but I want to get in here and get some of these veggies.
Basically sprouts. Nice. Nice crunch. Very fresh. I think the best thing to do is just add some of
the sauces here, but I'm gonna try everything first and then we'll add. Is it like green beans?
So fresh. Next, we're gonna try some of these greens. These are like, it looks like green
beans, but they're a little different. They're like smaller. They're actually more like condensed.
Let's try them. Yeah, it's like some sort of green bean. Rice with soy sauce.
I'm gonna make this dish really interesting. So I'm gonna add some of the peanut sauce
right there. Peanut sauce there. Mix it in. Oh, the peanut sauce is the best. It's so good.
Oh, I love the sweetness to it. Here we go.
I love the chunks of peanut. We see the greens.
So much flavor. Crunchy. Refreshing. The sauce is so unreal. Mad veg.
Lots of yummy veg. Gotta add some of this. Give it a little kick. Sweetness.
I never had such a delicious bite of veggies. Wow. Hindu food.
So good. I do not recommend this spicy sauce. It is too spicy. That's still hitting me from before.
I'm just gonna have a little more. I'm good, guys. This is like such a great lunch.
And if you see around, there's a lot of people here. I mean, this is the main spot. Out of all
the restaurants we saw on the road, this is the one that's the most packed. Up there is like 25
people ordering right now. Right now it's packed. Just me over here. Yeah. Man, this is why I love
traveling. Eating different dishes every day. New food. Just gonna pour all this sauce in.
Mix it up. All the rice and the peanut.
What a great combination. And I love how the peanut sauce has spice because I never see that.
They're never spicy. They're always sweet. This one has both. The best of both worlds.
Got a big scoop like that. It'd be a shame to leave this chicken. Chicken is so fresh and delicious.
So guys, I couldn't leave the food. I'm finishing everything.
I just broke everything up, mixed it all together, put some more of that peanut sauce.
The best peanut sauce of all time. This is really the best way to eat this food.
Throwing all the peanut sauce on top. Mixing it together like that. Got rice.
Got chicken. Got some noodles. And that's game.
The food was amazing. But the peanut sauce, man. The peanut sauce. Lenny, right? Lenny. Wow, some of
the best food I've had in Suriname. Let's go. Thank you. Thank you. Wow, it's so good. Yes.
So filling. So much flavor. Oh, refreshing. Super fresh chicken. And yeah, what a great meal. The
peanut sauce though. That's the max. Like the ultimate peanut sauce you will ever try. I like
spice and that's why I like it so much. And that was the town of Tamarejo or village of Tamarejo.
Javanese people live there. 95% of the people there are Javanese from Indonesia. And how long
is the drive to Albina now? 1 hour 50. 1 hour 50? No, 1 and a half hour. 1 and a half hour. Okay,
that's not bad. So 90 minutes till we get there. And if we see anything else along the road,
we'll definitely stop. He was telling me we could probably try some acai. Some acai fruit. If we do,
if we see it, we'll get it. If not, we'll keep going. So we stopped here at this like little
roadside hut. And the lady is selling a lot of different veggies. So here we have the eggplants.
You can see this is the eggplant that I've seen before yesterday. And today I saw the eggplants
from the Chinese market. And it was so difficult to do like long. These are like the big ones,
right? And they also have, what are these? All these other ones? These four? Lime beans. Lime
beans? Yes. And what's this one? So we call it andrua. Andrua. It's bitter. Yes, it's bitter
like the bitter melon. Okay, and this one? The bitter melon. Bitter melon, okay. Yeah,
this is the pomiciter. And you can make juice, the pomiciter juice from this. Yes, and we're
going to try it now. The fruit, you can eat the fruit. Maybe you're going to taste some separate
juice. Okay, you're going to eat this right now. I'm going to eat it. Okay.
It's like a, so it's a little crunchy. It's a little bitter. Yeah. That's what I actually
had earlier. The drink I had, this is the same fruit. Thank you. Okay. Okay. I mean,
we stop every five minutes, we're stopping. We're here in Suriname, headed to Albina,
two hour drive. All we see is bush, bush, and houses along the road, a lot of vendors,
and that's it. Right now there's motorcycle drivers passing us. And yeah, I mean, the final
piece of this country, where we're going is like the end. That's the frontera, the border
with French Guyana. And then you go north, where we're going, and you can also go south.
Okay, we're going over the bridge, over the Comoveno River. Yes, and this place we call
the Stalker Table. There's an old plantation, sugarcane plantation, coffee. I'll try the rum
now. Rum? Yes. Okay. And it's good for the potation. You know what this is? This is like
mamahuana. Mamahuana? Mamahuana. This is like from the DR. Okay. This is like an aphrodisiac. Yeah,
let's try this. That's it right there. So they put like the, I don't know what it is, like herbs and
leaf right there. Hello. Yeah. Chico. Pleasure. Let's try this. Yeah. This is better to clean
your body. That's one shot? Yes. Okay. So one shot? Yes. One shot.
One shot? My God. How much proof? 90 percent. 90? Yes, but now it's like 70.
What? Oh my God. That's bitter, sweet. So I mean it's an aphrodisiac. It's been sitting in here,
how long? It sits there for like a few weeks, right? I remember they told me 40 days is the
best and you put some honey in it, put some rum. This one's tough though. 90 percent proof.
Thank you. Great. What a process. Oh my God. That's a lot. I was trying to chug it and it
was like so much. The best thing in the world to have on a super hot day,
coconut. I'm from Miami. I could drink this all day. Oh my God. That's a lot.
Woo. Yeah, bro. There we go. And always use this as a spoon, right? So we go in,
get as much leche as possible so it's the flesh of the coconut.
That, right?
They come from the jungle, live ass, and they bring it to sell.
We are now in the district Marawena and we have like an hour to go to...
Oh, he has the acai juice? Yes, the acai juice. Perfect. Yes. Acai is a superfood that is found
in the Amazon rainforest. It's like super popular in Brazil and here they have it as well.
We don't even have to get out of the car. It's way too hot out there. It's perfect.
All right, so we decided to get out and drink it out here. How are we doing this? Maybe so.
But you can use it, you can put some little bit sugar inside too. Oh yeah? Yes. Oh my God,
what is up here? It's like pure, man. Yes, pure. Whoa, this is no joke.
It's delicious. Oh my God, so earthy. But I've never had this form just like that.
It's like super thick. So it's mixed with sugar? Yes, you can mix it with sugar. Okay.
Wow. Sorry, man, this is delicious. But look at me, I'm a mess. What happened here? How do I
clean myself? Amazing acai. Amazing. And he has it right here in this cooler. Dude,
it's so different. It's so different. Thank you guys. Thank you. Thank you.
All right, it started raining. My God, look where we're going. It looks like we're about to enter
a storm. I mean, we're entering the rainforest. You have to expect some rain, right? But this
is going to be, this is like intense. It's like foggy out there too. Oh my God, the rain is coming
on hardcore. We were supposed to be there like in 25 minutes. It's going to delay. It's probably
another 25 on top. Can't see anything. Wow. Luckily the road is like perfect, super smooth.
If this was like a muddy road, oh, even worse. Forget four hours, six hours. We literally went
through like a two minute rainstorm. That was it. Like two minutes, it got really scary. Lots of rain,
fog, couldn't see anything. The cars were passing by, we couldn't even see them. And then out of nowhere,
boom, sunshine. No more rain. That's what the rainforest is though. It's so unexpected. The
weather just changes so fast. We just entered the area of Albina. Albina is right along the river.
We're still in the jungle. As you can see, lots of turns here. There's some like judicial buildings
here. Some, I guess there's a residential business. That looks like a school right there.
What else? We have just trees, lots of jungle. Driving through Albina, what we see is a lot of
houses. See families, everybody's here along the road. Lots of cars parked in the middle. And then
it's like, it's like houses and there's also like little shacks to mix, right? So really small houses,
shacks, supermarkets, and a lot of people out. You know, that's, that's basically what I see right now.
And this is like, it's sort of divided by some grass in the middle,
and then right there is a town, right? Not a small city, it's a town.
For me, it's like major city, you know, smaller city, really small city, town, village, you know?
Yeah, town, and there's more town, and then a village is like more huddy, like just huts.
There we have the Marovena River, yes, and the other side, then the bottom end of France,
there's French Guiana, Saint-Laurent. Yes, now, welcome in Albina. We are here in Albina. Albina is
like a World War II stone, and the most people here is the Maroon people, and so we have the
American people here too, and the rest is like Chinese, Hindus. Basically, you know, it's a small
town along the river, right across from us is French Guiana, so a whole different country right
there, and from here, we get on one of these ferries, and we go up north to the Atlantic Ocean,
where Galibi is, and that's where he's from. So, that's basically our tour for today. You know, we
had an amazing time trying the food and drinks along this road. It was epic. What's the name of
this road? Oswestferbendig. Oswestferbendig. Yes. Okay, so that's the road, so that, that's basically
how it is. Two hours from Paramaribo, straight here, if you went straight, but we stopped a lot
of times, so it took us almost four hours between eating. My favorite thing today, I don't know, man,
the, oh my god, the Indo food, the Indo food. I mean, there were so many delicious things there,
but the peanut sauce was delicious and spicy, and then trying the acai on the street like that,
in its purest form, was just epic. So good, and yeah, I mean, this is something you have to do
when you come to Suriname, take a trip out here, and then make your way up to Galibi. Well, I hope
you guys love this video. If you did, please give me a thumbs up, leave me a comment below, subscribe
to my channel for more awesome travel content, and thanks to Jenny Tours for taking me on this
