We talk about unplugging a lot these days. Just a few years ago, to unplug meant to disconnect a machine from its power source. Nowadays, we hear the term applied to people far more frequently than to toasters and lamps. As the internet’s power and influence have grown more and more, the worldwide web has proven a snare to the human mind. If you’re reading this on an internet-connected device right now, you probably know what I mean. Computers, smartphones, and social media are dangerously addictive.

Recent studies show that many people, especially young people, are suffering from internet addiction. Like substance abuse, this addiction can impede proper development of the brain. It also can begin dangerous behavioral patterns which can lead to worse addictions.

Tiffany Brannan talks about a recent article in The Epoch Times which suggests ways that families can help treat and cure internet addiction in children. She also discusses her personal experiences with the psychological effects of internet use. Thankfully, it is possible to unplug, physically and mentally. The best way to treat any addiction is to provide a healthy alternative to the dangerous habit. For example, one of the best ways to unplug is to take up hiking, forest bathing, and other outdoor activities which allow you to spend time alone with nature.
