2-Time Olympian Eli Dershwitz shares footwork techniques and tips for pulling your opponent short in fencing. This is one video in a series of views he will be doing with Tim Morehouse Fe ncing Club.
This action is a defensive action to try and pull your opponent short in the middle of the strip.
So part one is going to be a slow advance followed by an accelerated advance. I'll demonstrate.
Slow step fast step with fake in the arm. It's important to have low body position so you can
change directions quickly and make sure your shoulders are relaxed. Okay, one more time.
Part one, slow step in fast step with fake. Make sure you're of low center of gravity.
Into part two, triple retreat. One, two, three. Make sure your body is in good posture
before accelerating into part three, which is double advance lunge. One, two, three. Make sure
arm is extending during that lunge after you have good body position and good balance. Part four,
recover and retreat to the starting position. Let's do five together. One, small pause. Two,
three, and repeat. One, slow step fast step. Two, triple retreat. Three, double advance lunge.
Four, recover retreat. Number two. One, two, three. Number three. Stay low. Make sure balance
is good. One, two, three. Rep number four. One, two, three. Nice job. Make sure when you're doing
this you're having low body posture, low on guard, low center of gravity. It'll help you change
directions quicker and be more accelerating with your lunge. If you want to be a champion, you got
to work hard every day. This is a helpful exercise to do during footwork, especially after practice
if you're trying to do some extra work. You can aim for three to six reps per set. Small rest in
between sets. Do four or five sets a few times a week. You'll start to notice big changes in
how quick you're moving over a few weeks and a few months.
