One of the main things that drew me to the idea of visiting India for the first time in February of 2018 was its legendary street food, which I had heard so much about for years. After falling in love with the food, as well as the country’s culture and people, I almost immediately began planning my return trip, which to took just ten months later in November. Together with my buddy Sam from Samuel & Audrey, I ate my way through seven cities in just under three weeks and had an incredible cultural and culinary experience I will never forget!
Day one in Ahmedabad may have been coming to a close, but we still hadn’t had dinner yet! I again enlisted the help of my new friend Rutu and her brother, who took me and Sam on an outstanding veg food tour that blew my mind! Come along with us as we wrap up our first day in this incredible city!
For dinner, Rutu and her brother took me and Sam to Food Junction, an amazing spot in the city where roughly 20 food trucks converge around 150 tables and serve a variety of different cuisines, including Mexican and Chinese, but made with an Indian twist. I couldn’t wait to dive into some of the most delicious food in the city!
We started off with some shots of plum puree served atop dry ice, with salt around the rim. It was amazing! Super thick, with lots of sweet, mouthwatering plum flavor. It was like a cross between a plum smoothie and a non-alcoholic margarita!
Next, we went to Eat ‘n Meet, a barbecue food truck that sells Paneer Tikka with cheese, which is melted with a blowtorch. The owner was so kind to us and offered it to us free of charge. We got two different paneer dishes, Tandoori Paneer and Pudina Paneer (200 rupees), alongside mint chutney. The Tandoori Paneer was thick and juicy, and the tomatoes and other vegetables provided a really nice contrast to the roasted, charcoal flavors. The Pudina Paneer was equally phenomenal and came with onion. It wasn’t spicy at all, but was still packed with so many amazing flavors. It was my first time having veg barbecue and it did not disappoint at all!
Our next food was a fried, mixed Indo-Chinese dish from Chowpaty, called Paneer Manchuri (150 rupees), which is a mixture of Paneer Chilli (my favorite Indian dish ever) and Manchuri. The Manchuri’s texture reminded me of a Chinese fish ball, but I learned it’s actually cabbage! It contained lots of chilies, but wasn’t too spicy.
Next, we had cheese corn rolls, which were like little cheese croquettes served with mint chutney and tomato chutney. It was crunchy on the outside and the doughy inside was almost like bechamel! I loved it with the mint, but it was even better with the tomato!
Our next culinary adventure was at a truck that sells over 2,000 varieties of sandwich! We got a Tarka sandwich, a spicy sandwich made with a focaccia-like bread and a vegetable filling, that is then topped with butter, spices, a cracker, and a mound of shredded cheese. It came with five chutneys, the first of which was delicious, and the sweet chutney was also very nice. The spiciest was very hot, but I could handle it! At 200 rupees, it’s the costliest sandwich on the menu.
Our last dish was ice cream rolls, which are made on a frozen griddle right in front of you. Mine was called the Chocolate Blink, which contains Oreos, KitKats, and Nutella and is topped with chocolate sauce and comes with two wafer cookies. It was so rich and decadent, and all of the flavors were infused into the ice cream. I’d never had anything like it before, and it was so good! It was the perfect end to our veg street food tour!
I loved the food at Food Junction! The vendors were so friendly and hospitable, the setup here is so cool and organized, and it’s definitely one of the best food truck spots I’ve ever visited.
I hope you enjoyed this video of our all-veg food tour of Ahmedabad! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. Also, please subscribe to my channel and click the notification bell so you don’t miss any of my upcoming food and travel content!
PHENOMENAL Veg INDIAN Street Food TOUR at Food Junction | Ahmedabad, India
Tadka.
So we'll be trying that.
I need that right now.
The spiciest sandwich.
The spiciest sandwich?
Not spicy enough.
Oh my God!
What's up guys?
David Hoffman here from David's Bin here in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India with my friend
Ritu from You Eat Me Insane.
Yes, that's what I was saying.
I know, I know.
It took me like five video tries.
But yeah, so we're here at the food junction and this is like a huge spot full of food
trucks.
Twenty food trucks roughly.
And what are we going to eat here?
So this food truck, it's a combination of various cuisines.
Mexican, Chinese, you have Indian.
So if you have Mexican cuisine, you have Indian touch to it.
So everything is made with some Indian touch to it.
So let's try.
So there's like tacos with spices.
Yeah.
What I'm most excited about, definitely the dosa.
Yeah.
I think we'll try Mexican.
Mexican?
I don't know.
I really want Indian.
I love Indian food.
All right, let's go find some food.
So we're starting with Jamboshot, which are basically plum shots.
Exactly.
And they have it directly.
It's a juice which is extracted from the fruit and then they have it directly.
You just have to have a shot.
But what is it?
They put like dry ice under it and then they made it like, you know, steam up in a way.
Yeah, yeah.
It's still very cold.
They have dry ice stuffed to it.
Very cold.
It's like a super thick, plummy taste.
Oh, this is amazing.
And they also put salt on this.
Right?
Make a little plum margarita.
Oh, it's amazing.
And plum is really good for you.
I actually have five plums a day.
I have a thing that says five plums a day for your body to be like.
Wow.
I'm going to have to have another one.
It's almost like a smoothie.
Plum.
Right?
David, we enjoyed this so much that we had to split another one.
Oh my gosh these are good.
Plum juice guys.
Plum puree.
Ah.
You know what?
This is the only shot we'll be doing in this state but delicious though.
So behind me we have a barbecue spot.
There's no non-veg food here though.
So everything is paneer.
Right?
Paneer tikka.
Paneer tikka with cheese.
I think that paneer tikka with cheese must be delicious.
Want to get one?
Alright, so we're going to have some paneer tikka with cheese from Eat and Meat, a barbecue joint.
I got to say the owner is amazing.
Thank you to her.
I don't know her name.
Very hospitable.
Yeah, very hospitable.
She didn't even charge us.
She's like, just eat my food.
Amazing.
It's my first time eating veg barbecue.
Super excited.
What do we have?
We have two different things.
Yeah, so we have normal basic tandoori paneer.
Okay.
And this is pudina paneer.
Pudina paneer.
Yeah.
And it's baked.
There's the cheese.
It's garnished with cheese.
And the cheese is baked with the light torch.
Wow.
Okay.
And I love how they made it.
They basically made it like a tandoori.
Yeah.
Right?
They cooked it.
Then they put it on here.
They put more paneer on top.
And then they torched it.
They freaking nuked it.
Yeah.
Which is amazing.
I love it because it's just like a cheese bomb.
Yes.
And this is mint chutney.
Oh, always mint chutney.
Always.
This is so good.
Very thick paneer.
Tomato.
Mmm.
Juicy.
You have that little roasted taste from the barbecue.
Charcoal.
And then that nuked cheese on top.
Just phenomenal.
And the next one is?
Pudina.
Lek pudina.
Mint.
Okay.
Yeah.
It's a little green.
I couldn't see the green because of all the cheese.
And there's also some onions in here as well.
I'll tell you.
If I have to become vegetarian for the rest of my life, I'm moving to India because the
food here is so amazing.
The paneer.
Oh, and this is to calm down the heat.
This is not hot at all.
If you're like into like veg food and you don't want too much spice, definitely eat
this.
I'm sure they can do some spicy as well.
If you ask for it.
You know?
You have.
You have shashlik paneer which is a bit spicy.
Okay.
So the next dish we have is from this Chinese place called Chowpatty.
It's actually Indo-Chinese.
Yes.
And it's a mixed dish.
It's actually paneer manchuri.
Yes.
With chilies.
Yes.
So it's basically.
Combination of paneer chili and manchuri.
Together.
So basically it's a bit spicy.
With a Chinese touch.
Chinese sauces.
Like you know soya sauce, vinegar and everything to it.
And it's fried as well.
Wow.
Combination of both.
So you have the paneer here and then this is the manchuri, right?
Yes.
And you have all these chilies.
Yes.
Like a lot of chilies.
Yes.
I'm going to try the manchuri first.
And the French onion.
And French onion.
Wow.
Manchuri right here.
It's a big ball.
All the flavours.
Is manchuri like a cheese?
No.
No, not cheese.
So what is that?
Vegetables.
It's a vegetable?
So Indian-Chinese food usually has a French onion too.
Okay.
Yeah.
And lots of sauces.
But it felt like a.
Almost like a fish ball.
That I had.
You know.
Like a Chinese fish ball.
That like consistency.
Mmm.
Nice and juicy.
It's cabbage.
There you go.
So it has that like.
The feeling of it, right?
Yeah.
Oh and the next thing we have here is the paneer.
It's a huge piece of paneer.
With chili.
Look at this.
Try this.
This thing is so good.
It's not too spicy.
Lots of vegetables.
I mean.
I'll tell you.
My favourite thing in the world is paneer chili.
I had it on Yuhu Beach.
And I keep thinking about it.
It's been like 8 months.
And I'm like.
When am I going to get my next paneer chili?
And I'm like.
Yeah.
It's finally a year.
Oh my god.
So our friends here are eating me or barbecuing more.
I don't know.
This lady is just too nice.
She brought us some cheese corn rolls.
It's actually like.
These look like cheese croquettes.
They're still a little hot.
I think this is mint chutney.
This is tomato chutney.
Yes.
I guess I'll go with the mint because it's my favourite.
Oh my god.
It almost tastes like bechamel.
Mmm.
Jesus Christ.
Cheese melted.
There's a lot of vegetables inside it.
Not spicy.
Oh.
It's a little crunchy on the outside.
Very doughy on the inside.
Now I'm going to get some more of this.
Oh.
With this one.
Even better.
Oh my god.
Stop.
More food.
Yes.
Sandwiches.
Sandwiches?
No.
I want something.
I want a dosa.
Stop.
So my favourite thing of all that.
Oh.
I don't know.
The paneer chilli was too good.
Yes.
It was too good.
Too good.
Too juicy.
Too cheesy.
But I got to say the Indian meat food was stellar.
Stellar barbecue.
Just like on another level of deliciousness.
And it cost 200 for the dishes that we had there.
150 for the other dish.
The Indo-Chinese.
The paneer chilli with the mint chutney.
Yes.
And then now I don't know.
There's so many other things.
Let's try pizza stone.
Got sandwiches.
We have chillies.
Punjabi.
I don't know.
Too many places.
Let me find something.
Next up we're getting a sandwich.
And this place behind us has over 2000 varieties of sandwiches.
2000.
It's like a Guinness World Record here.
Yeah.
From chocolate watermelon sandwich to chocolate banana sandwich to chocolate jam sandwich.
They have like N number of sandwiches.
This is too much.
Are we getting a spicy one?
Yes.
Tadka sandwich.
Tadka.
So we'll be trying that.
I need that right now.
Yeah.
The spiciest sandwich.
The spiciest sandwich?
Yeah.
What do we have here?
This is like the craziest sandwich ever.
Oh chutney soup?
Thank you so much.
All the spicy.
Oh all the spice we want.
So I dip it in.
Yeah.
Different types.
Wow.
So look at this.
We have this nice thick bread.
This is almost like a focaccia bread.
Right?
Yeah.
They filled it up with a bunch of stuff.
They put it on this like sandwich like griddle almost.
Then they put that to heat up.
Then they take it out.
They cut it.
They cut all the crust off.
Then they put all this freaking cheese on top.
They put spices.
They put this like little cracker.
Then they put more cheese.
More spice.
Yeah.
This is insane and it costs 200 rupees for this.
It's very spicy.
Yeah.
I mean they cut it into four squares right?
Oh.
Wow.
So.
Just dip it into one of the chutneys.
Red is very sweet.
These are very spicy.
Spicy.
Yes.
So dip it.
Oh wow.
I hope it's spicy.
No it's spicy.
Definitely.
Okay.
Oh man.
And lots of cheese.
Yeah I was gonna ask you what's in the inside?
Do you know?
It's vegetable.
It's like a vegetable thing.
A vegetable mix.
And then you got nice fluffy bread.
You got some more spice in the middle.
Lots of cheese on top.
I mean my hand is covered in cheese.
And lots and lots of ghee.
Can't go without having ghee.
I'm gonna try some of the sweet really quick.
Oh it's like everything is falling in though.
Tough tough.
And the bread is quite different you know.
Than the usual bread you get it in India.
Oh.
They have used a different type of bread.
No but the sandwich is phenomenal.
It's awesome.
It's the costliest sandwich out there by the way.
Oh yeah?
Yeah.
200 rupees cost a sandwich.
That's incredible.
I'm still looking for the spiciest one.
Nothing is like too flaming hot yet.
Not that spicy.
This is sweet I think.
That one's sweet.
I'm going through all of them.
No?
No.
Not spicy enough.
Oh my god.
Drink the sweet.
I think I need a lassi or something to cool down this heat now.
So the fact I think it's...
I'm good I'm good.
I can handle the spice.
I'm Indian.
Let's try.
You go for the spice and I'll go for the sweet.
Yeah I'll go for the spice.
I'm gonna dip it.
I'm gonna film it.
I'm gonna taste it now.
I hope it's...
Yeah cheers.
Not spicy?
Not that spicy for me.
I think I'm immune to that.
But it's good.
It's good.
Definitely something different to taste.
So I would recommend it.
Definitely the tadka do it.
So to end our meal we're here at New Zealand Dots Ice Cream Rolls.
And basically if you've never seen this.
They make ice cream right in front of you.
On this freezing like griddle I guess.
It's like a frozen griddle.
It's live ice cream.
Yeah it's live ice cream.
Yeah live ice cream.
So the way they do it is...
So he has a huge menu here.
I selected the chocolate blink I think it's called.
I'm gonna get that too.
That looks amazing.
Two chocolate blinks.
Yeah so it's Oreo, KitKat and Nutella.
So he's gonna basically...
He puts the milk right?
Yeah.
The milk onto the frozen griddle.
And then it freezes.
And then he cuts up the KitKat bar.
Cuts up the Oreos.
Throws on Nutella.
Mixes it all together.
Makes it into rolls.
Oh it's gonna be so good.
I'm very excited.
I had this in Lucknow.
And I was blown away.
Blown away yeah.
It's gonna be my first time to try it man.
I can't wait.
What a nice way to end the day.
Oh my gosh.
Live ice cream.
Live ice cream guys.
This is the most insane thing in the world.
It is so good.
I've only seen this in India.
And only one time.
In Lucknow.
Now here in Ahmedabad.
We're eating it.
And this is such an infusion of flavors.
We have three different chocolate ingredients.
We have KitKat.
We have Oreo.
Nutella.
Basically he put it all together.
Then he put the milk.
He turned it into ice cream.
He made it into this nice like.
It almost looks like a dosa in a way.
Then he turned it into rolls.
Yeah.
And then.
I'm like going on a speed rampage right now.
But I'm so excited to eat this.
And then he put like.
Some more Nutella.
Oreos.
KitKat.
And then these little chocolates.
I mean.
So much chocolate here.
I'm going with the roll.
Yeah.
It's gonna be frozen.
Super cold.
Oh my god.
He's loving it.
Brain freeze.
Exactly.
It's like.
The best thing in the world.
That is made of this.
It's like.
You don't know what this is.
Exactly.
This is like the realest ice cream in the world.
Yeah.
It's too much.
It's like too much.
It's so rich with all those things that I told you about.
It's just been infused into the ice cream.
I've never had it before.
Usually if they do it.
They'll break it up.
But here.
They actually make the ice cream.
Exactly.
With it.
Wow.
I have to go for one more bite.
One more bite.
My love for this type of ice cream.
It's too good.
I'm gonna like.
Let go of this.
Because Sam has to eat this soon.
But guys.
I hope you love this video.
Because we visited one of the coolest food truck places I've ever been to.
I've never been to a place that's set up so amazingly.
In the center we have like.
I don't know.
150 tables.
Lots of families here.
Everybody comes here.
They mingle.
They eat.
They drink.
No alcohol.
Just drink like fruity drinks.
Remember dry state.
Yeah.
We tried so many delicious things.
I don't know what my favorite was.
I mean so many good paneer dishes.
I really love the eat and meet.
I gotta thank the lady there.
She's just.
She's such a nice lady.
Yeah.
Very hospitable.
And yeah.
I gotta thank my friends here at You Eat Me Insane.
Yeah.
Perfect.
Yeah.
Subscribe to them.
Subscribe to me.
Subscribe to Sam behind the camera.
And we'll see you on more child food adventures throughout India.
Hit the like.
Comment.
Peace.
That's the best I could.
Hahaha.
