I was walking around Karachi when I noticed something strange… “Delhi Sweets.” In Pakistan. And it’s not just one shop — all over the city you’ll find places named after Indian cities like Delhi, Bombay, and more. So what’s going on here?
In this video, I step inside one of these sweet shops to find out:
Why these names still exist,
The history behind it,
And what locals think about it today.
Along the way, we check out the food (of course), meet the people, and uncover a story that most tourists completely miss.
This is one of those small details that reveals a much bigger connection between India and Pakistan.
Delhi Sweets, except I'm here in Karachi, Pakistan.
Delhi Sweets right here.
Let's go inside and see what the scene is.
Delhi Sweets, huh?
Let's see what they've got outside first.
It's pretty common in Karachi to see shops named after Indian cities.
Like Delhi Rabri House or Bombay Bakery.
Just like we have Karachi Bakery and Peshawar Sweet Bhandar in India.
But why do they still keep these names?
What's your special dish?
Aloo Samosa? Okay.
Oh, here's the samosas outside.
So they're frying them. They're frying them just here.
Nice to meet you.
Thank you.
Hello.
Where are you from?
New Zealand.
Nice to meet you.
You too, bro.
Let's check out inside, eh?
So Gulab Jamun is here.
Halwa.
This place is nice. It's clean. It's modern.
And I found it by accident. It was near my hotel in Nursery, Karachi.
Usually the owner or his son will be at the till.
We'll try and catch them in a bit.
Okay, cakes and doughnuts.
We don't want cakes or doughnuts. They're not from Delhi.
Oh, nice. This is like Kalakand. Let's see.
This is dry fruit. Let me grab a little of this.
My hands are dirty.
Dry fruit halwa.
Oh my God.
Give me two pieces.
Nice sweets, man.
Oh, these look good as well. Nice.
And that's why you'll find places like Delhi Sweets in Karachi.
After partition, people moved across borders.
But they didn't leave everything behind.
They carried their memories, their recipes and a piece of home with them.
So I can confirm they're keeping it real in there.
Great Mithai. Great Mithai. Lives up to the name Delhi.
