English is all around you.
Sometimes you just have to know where to look for.
How can I remember new words?
Why I can't understand written English but I can speak?
Should I buy a grammar book to start?
Hello awesome people and welcome back to English fluency with Albert.
By the end of this video you should have a clear understanding of how to effectively learn English
and reach that super beautiful wanted C2 level.
So let's start by imagining five lights.
Your goal is to turn on every single light and there are only two rules.
Turn them on in the exact order I'll say and never let them turn off.
The first light you need to turn on is listening.
In particular passive listening.
Which basically means to listen to this language as much as possible without paying attention to it.
In other words start by listening to anything you prefer as you are doing other things.
You can listen to anything you want as long as it's in English it's good.
For example this very lesson you are watching, this is good.
Even if you don't understand everything you just want to keep listening.
The goal in fact is to let the sounds of this language into your brain and you don't need to understand for that.
If you think about it English is everywhere all around you.
Music, commercials, the internet they all speak this language.
You can do this whenever you can as long as you don't get distracted from your daily activities.
Use your earphones and put on a podcast on Spotify or listen to it as you're going to work even.
Does it work you're asking?
You better.
Here is an example.
Do you ever turn on your TV just to watch some commercials?
Of course not.
But then one day you have to buy a new car.
Which car brand are you going to choose from?
A car brand you've never heard of or the one you recently heard on TV?
And that's exactly what I'm saying.
Even if you haven't paid any attention to the commercial that car brand stuck into your brain and only came out when it was necessary.
That my friend is the power of passive listening.
So if you think you can't remember new words in English or you think you know very little vocabulary.
Probably it's because you didn't turn on this first light.
Now let's say you started passive listening.
The moment you start to recognize a few words and you feel the curiosity to know more.
Then you're ready to turn on the next light.
Active listening.
In fact my friend the biggest difference between passive and active listening is all in your level of focus.
Now let's say you turn the second light on.
Do you still need to listen passively?
Yes you do.
Remember the second rule?
Never let the lights off.
This time you have an active role.
Find new words.
Search the meaning of phrases you encounter.
And in other words you want to be curious.
This is in fact the moment to only listen to things you are very interested in.
You only need a few minutes a day.
Quality always over quantity.
According to your level you might watch a documentary.
A city state is a city that with its surrounding territory forms an independent state.
Or a TV series.
My name is Tokyo.
But when this story began that wasn't my name.
Don't move!
Or a comedy show.
I thought McDonald's was supposed to have fast and friendly service.
She was like that's at participating McDonald's and we ain't participating.
Watch whatever you want but do it without subtitles.
If you believe you need subtitles to understand don't worry.
I also made a video right on this topic.
And I'm going to leave a link down here in the description.
Now speaking of that.
If you feel like you're learning a lot.
Make sure to subscribe to this channel.
My goal is to make your fluency as easy as possible.
And if that's your goal too.
But this is your home.
You're more than welcome to stay.
Now the next slide is speaking.
And wait before you rush and do it.
Because there's a moment.
A particular moment you want to wait for.
Recognize the first language patterns.
A language pattern is a group of words that often repeats during a conversation.
I also was wondering just a little bit about the man who brought him here.
Just a little bit.
She died when I was very young.
It's just a little bit wrong, isn't it?
What's wrong with you?
I mean what's wrong with you?
Albert, what's wrong with you?
Think of your favorite song for example.
Even if you can't sing.
You probably found yourself singing that particular song out loud when no one is around.
And I bet that the easiest part of that song to remember was the chorus.
The chorus of the song is just like a language pattern.
Because it's formed of recognizable words that repeat themselves over and over and over.
And if you listen to this language over and over.
And you like what you're hearing.
That's when you're ready to start speaking.
And just like singing our favorite song.
In the beginning it doesn't matter if there's someone listening to you.
Actually you want to start by speaking on your own, alone, at home.
This way you'll be able to practice speaking in a relaxed environment.
Without distractions.
In fact I also made a video just on this topic.
Where I show you many different techniques.
Like how to use shadowing.
How to record yourself.
And even how to use karaoke nights to your advantage.
But then comes the moment when you want to have a real conversation.
What if you don't know anybody that speaks English?
You can definitely find a person to talk with about your favorite topics.
Using platforms like Facebook, Discord or even Meetup.
Just go on any of these platforms and find groups based on your particular interests.
Once you find somebody to talk with.
You may ask for a Skype conversation for example.
And this is how you get the ball rolling.
The more you do it.
The more your international group of people will expand.
And this will naturally get you speaking with more and more people.
Now the most important aspect my friend.
And this is so important I'm getting closer to the camera.
Is your pronunciation.
When you are speaking with somebody.
Your pronunciation is the number one thing they will notice about you.
And the way you pronounce words is literally going to be a make or break factor.
When it comes to your communication.
I've seen people with university degrees only able to pick up jobs as dishwashers.
Because when they spoke nobody took them seriously.
And I've also seen people with very little English vocabulary.
Receiving big offers and opportunities solely because they were easily understood by the people around them.
Your pronunciation is like your business card.
Because that's who you are for them.
Remember they don't know you yet.
They don't know how good or talented you are.
Unless you are able to tell them.
So this stage is the right moment to take care of your pronunciation.
Even if you only know four words.
If you come across as natural and confident.
Those words will serve you better than knowing the whole English dictionary.
So if you think you understand English.
But have some difficulties with speaking.
It's probably because either you haven't listened enough to this language.
Or you haven't trained your pronunciation enough.
Hey by the way.
Did you notice that I haven't even mentioned grandma yet?
That's true.
Yes.
I will.
Don't worry.
We're just not there yet.
In fact.
The next slide to turn on.
Is actually.
Read in.
This slide turns on naturally.
Automatically.
As you are more and more involved with this language.
So don't rush to buy any book for the moment.
Until you have spoken English for at least a few months.
In fact.
The first encounter with reading is usually through the Internet.
As you start doing some research in English.
On your particular topic of interest.
As you speak more and more English with real people.
You'll also start to receive the first text messages through WhatsApp.
And then you will lastly be drawn naturally to books.
This is the moment to expand and enrich your vocabulary.
With richer and more interesting expressions.
And when you find yourself in the position of having to write this language.
Then.
And only then.
Will be the time to turn the last light on.
Writing and grammar.
This is finally the moment to pick up a pen and a grammar book.
Because my friend.
As soon as you start writing.
You also realize how much you didn't know about this language.
But that's ok.
Nobody is perfect my friend.
So when you reach this level.
You can finally buy your copy of Grammary News.
And start diving deep into it.
Now there's a good chance you actually started learning English from this point.
But can you see now how useless this is?
This is why when I decided to start this channel.
I made sure to include only topics that would light up your first three lights.
And you'll find every video in this channel for you available to watch.
I understand anyway that sometimes life gets in the way.
And you have to start writing English.
Before you even get the chance to understand how this language works.
But now you have a direction.
And you know the whole process.
So let's get on with the final quiz.
And the answer was.
After you start recognizing the first language patterns.
Alright.
Well done if you guessed this.
And the answer was.
Alright I'm sure you're doing great.
Let's get on with the last one.
And the answer of course is absolutely not.
You're gonna buy a grammar book.
Only when you have already turned on the first four lights.
Alright.
It's in fact time to start turning on the first two lights.
This video will show you exactly what to watch according to your level of confidence.
So see you in there.
Cheers.
