If you understand English but can't speak it, it can only be for one of two reasons: a) you don't feel confident b) you THINK you understand, but you don't. Follow me in this video, where I'm going to show you the what, the why, and how to fix this very common issue!
Hello awesome people! How you doing today? If you're watching this video is
probably because you understand English but then you can't speak and I
understand you because it happened to me too and actually to be to be honest this
is the fifth or sixth time that I'm starting this video because it was very
hard to find a way to actually talk about this topic it's not easy I
understand that if you understand English but you can't speak it there are
only two situations either you really understand English but can't speak it
and this has to do with a psychological reason or you think you understand
English but then you can't speak it because you actually don't understand it
and since I want this video to be as useful as possible here is a clip to
help you assess your situation as you watch it just rate how much you
What's playing at the multiplex today? Another big-budget sequel? The same old
romantic comedy? Yet another superhero movie? Probably that last one.
A lot of time Hollywood is driven by trends the success of one film or genre
inspires others to jump on the bandwagon and that's how we end up with nothing
but reboots and dystopian fantasies.
Man it wasn't easy was it? A few years ago I would have answered minus one.
Well jokes apart if you answered one to six I'm about to give you a set of very
helpful and handy tips to start doing straight away and if you answered seven
or above well my friend yes you really understand English this is good and the
next couple of tips will really help you out possibly from today first of all
let's assume that you really do understand English in this case if you
find yourself unable to speak it's mostly because you don't feel confident
and you're too afraid of making mistakes so the first suggestion is to
be okay not being okay I mean you don't need to be perfect in order to start
speaking the language you just need to start speaking and the more you speak
the better you get here are a few ways to feel better with yourself when it
speaking a foreign language the most practical one record yourself as you
speak English you want to get used to the way you sound in English because
sometimes that's the only reason why we believe that we can't speak English we
sound strange to ourselves and for this reason we just avoid speaking listening
to yourself in English trains your brain to recognize your own voice in another
language and once you used to hear your voice in English it'll be
psychologically way easier to speak this language another thing that will
definitely help you speaking is actually pushing the like button I'm just joking
but actually if you like in this content go ahead and push the like button this
will definitely help the algorithm to spread this video around and so if you
did thank you very much and how seriously another way probably more
powerful is to record yourself if you record yourself speaking in English just
like I'm doing right now actually this is a very good way to really completely
get past any objections from yourself that you can't speak the language
because hey you're speaking it after a few recordings you don't even realize
that you had a problem in the past it'll be completely normal to you but these
things only apply if you really understand English this is something
that you may have not thought about are you sure you really understand it do you
understand better spoken English or written English and if you find
yourself more comfortable with written English it's just because you got used
to the written language and when that's the case my friend well it's even
simpler because you're just dealing with habits you can change habits pretty
reasonably quickly according to the way you act and the habit that kept you from
growing your listening can only be the subtitles so well just get rid of them
this is what I did for example I started watching everything without subtitles
for me it was very difficult it was very very difficult because I couldn't
understand anything but I did it constantly day after day as I was
getting rid of the subtitles I noticed that something else happened not only
was I improving my listening skills but I was also repeating back what the
people in the movies were saying I started using their accent I started
copying the way they were speaking and my vocabulary and comprehension grew
tremendously so much so that when people ask me do you speak English I started to
say yes I do whereas before that when they asked me if I spoke English I
always backed a little saying a little bit but I'm not saying subtitles are bad
I'm just saying that the habit of using subtitles is bad subtitles my friend are
just a tool so they are there to be used when they need to be used for
example if you are very interested in a segment of a video you're watching and
you can't understand what the person is saying that's some simple stuff you know
like he takes you to introduce you to his mama that's a good sign if you never
meet his mama you ain't the woman you see here people are laughing but maybe
you don't even understand why well that's definitely the case to turn on
the subtitles to understand what the word is that's some simple stuff you
know like he takes you to introduce you to his mama that's a good sign if you
never meet his mama you ain't the woman alright so that's why they were laughing
now turn off the subtitles once again to listen closely to the pronunciation
that's some simple stuff you know like he takes you to introduce you to his
mama that's a good sign if you never meet his mama you ain't the woman and if
you really want to bring it to the next level just repeat the last sentence
after him you ain't the woman you ain't the one you ain't the woman you ain't
the one so to me that's a very good use of the subtitles my friend if you take
care of your listening skills they will in turn take care of your speaking
skills the two things are very much related when you fix one the other one
kind of follows and this is what I'm teaching to all my students right now
the students that had the most outstanding results have always been
the ones that watched everything without subtitles thanks to the suggestions one
student in particular actually started her own YouTube channel in English and I
want to give you one more suggestion do me a favor and avoid slow-paced English
hi everybody welcome to beginner one the alphabet let's begin with the first
letter a hold on hold on stop it please if it's slow it's not English the
English language is not slow actually it's very fast and there are two ways to
learn to be faster you can understand every single rule of how to speak faster
or you just start to listen to faster English the same notions that you will
learn in a pronunciation course and this goes against me because I do have a
pronunciation course but the same notions that you understand during a
pronunciation course are the same ones that you can learn through fast
listening so it's just start to have fun enjoy what you're doing because whatever
it is if you're doing it with fun it works 100 times better I leave you to
watch this next video that you see right here and I'll see you next time
Cheers
