Seven ways to master 90s minimalism.
Hello and welcome to my channel, which is dedicated to style education. So rather than
showing you what to wear today, I'm kind of giving you tips on how to implement this 90s minimalism
within your wardrobe, pieces you may already own, styling tips you can easily do, and hopefully this
will be helpful if you want to create that look. So obviously there is a huge resurgence for the
90s minimalism look, and that is due to Love Story, if you've not seen it already, about
Carolyn Bessette and JFK Jr. I actually read quite a few books over the summer on them, including
the book that the series is based off. So I feel like I was already quite deep down that rabbit
hole. Obviously Carolyn Bessette has kind of become a huge style icon again within the past
maybe two or three years. And with this series coming out, it really has just accelerated that
movement. But as you know, I feel like this whole look is not really too far away from my whole
style in general, and she's definitely been one of my radar for a long time. So I'm really happy
that this seems here to stay. And what I love about it is that it does lean more towards classic,
simple, and it still looks modern today, which is a weird kind of pairing together of something that
feels 90s but also modern at the same time. And I think that is because of its inherent simplicity.
So let's begin with tip number one, which is a sleeveless roll neck with tailoring.
This is so classic 90s when you look at old runways, possibly like a Ralph Lauren, Calvin
Klein runway from the 90s as an outfit almost just identical to this. But I do feel like it's very,
it's a little bit Rachel from Friends vibes as well. So we've got the high neck knit. Sleeveless
is absolutely crucial for this trend and also really nice for spring too. This is a cashmere
from Elmada. So it's one of those that's really nice for spring. It kind of keeps your body warm,
is one of those fabrics that adapts to your body temperature almost. So this is really beautiful.
I've gone tonal with this, with these wide leg trousers. These are from Cezanne last year. I think
this little kind of bag is quite crucial to the whole look as well as like a really simple shoe.
You could do a loafer with this, a ballet flat. I've just gone for a very simple heeled sandal.
But the key takeaway for me is the roll neck with the tailoring. And you could do this
with a maxi skirt. I've actually got a similar look coming up. So I wanted to show this with
the wider leg trousers. But I think key to note is that the style, particularly in the 90s,
wasn't mega wide leg. If anything, it was slightly more straight leg or even just like this,
where it's like almost a loose straight leg. But if we're talking about recreating this look,
you can do this with the wider legs you've already got in your wardrobe or the maxi skirts,
like I say, look so chic with this. But it's definitely about that slimmer line silhouette
from top to bottom. Tip number two is elegant jewellery. If you look back on those old 90s
photos of this minimalism trend, it was very much about that real classic timeless jewellery,
nothing too over the top, very subtle. It's got that real quiet luxury feel to it.
So I have two lots of styles to show you today. Both are from a brand called Gingiberry,
which are a new brand on my radar, but they are working with me on this tip in the video. So
Gingiberry is a fine jewellery brand, which obviously fits perfectly with the theme of
today's video. They specialise in pearls. They have the most beautiful selection of pearl pieces
on their website, which is perfect for me in my bridal era. If you're looking for that special
gift or beautiful piece for bridal jewellery or as a gift to somebody around that time of their life,
then do have a look at their website and all their stunning classic pearl pieces. They also have the
lab-grown diamonds, which I'm wearing right now. So let's start with the necklace. This is the
Nouveau necklace, and you'll see how stunning the packaging is as well. And I think when you're
getting a special piece like this, to have beautiful packaging to keep it in, to travel with,
is always really important to me and really adds to that whole purchasing experience. So the Nouveau
is a 0.5 carat lab-grown diamond necklace. So it's Clarity VS, which I have started to learn
about a bit more with my engagement ring. And then the colour is D2F in 14 carat solid gold.
This necklace is to die for. Now, if you've been following me, you'll know that my engagement ring
is also a bezel. I am obsessed with bezel diamonds. I think they look so chic and it just
really elevates the whole diamond. I've then paired it with the urn ring, which I think
complements it really nicely. And this, to me, for a diamond ring of the size of the diamond,
is such a good price, especially if you use my discount code as well. So you can use LID15 and
that can be used site-wide anytime. So no rush to use that. But it also can be combined with the
Mother's Day promo from the 7th of April to the 31st of May. You can get $10 off for every $300
spent, $20 off for $500, $35 off for $800, $60 off for $1,200 and $100 off for $1,800.
And then finally, $140 off for $2,400 spent. You also get double G points, free shipping worldwide,
30 days free return and duty-free shopping. The urn ring is a 0.69 carat lab-grown ring.
And as I say, just such a beautiful diamond and perfectly complements the necklace, as does the
earrings that I've styled this with. So these are the Briole 1 carat lab-grown diamond ear studs.
They've got Clarity VS, again, color D to F and 14 carat solid gold. And as you'll see,
these have the very fine bezel too. To mirror the necklace, every woman at some point in their life
needs a pair like this, just a really classic, simple diamond. So as I mentioned, Gingerberry
really specialize in pearls. All of them are very carefully graded and I've got a few to show you.
So the first are these beautiful drop earrings. So these are the Ariel long drops, which are so
stunning. There's actually two ways you can wear these. So these are perfect if you want something
a little bit more statement. It's still very modern and minimal. And they're this baroque
pearl as well. So slightly uneven shaped, which I think is so chic. You can actually remove the
pearl drop from these earrings and you get just a very small gold vermeil hoop earring. I've then
styled it with the Elodie bracelet, which is the ultimate classic pearl bracelet. And they have a
few different styles of pearl bracelets. This one has the gold clasp on it, which just gives it a
nice contrast. And if you're someone who loves gold, then this is perfect. Again, they've got
the Aurora Baroque pearls, which are stunning. So timeless and really perfect for this minimal look
we're trying to create. And if you wanted more of a very classic pearl stud, I've got these,
are called Ready for Love, which is so pretty. Again, ties in with that bridal theme a little
bit. So you can get them with different pearl grades and also different pearl sizes. So you
can really kind of custom them to what you are looking for. The ones I've got are the 10 to 12
millimeter Aurora pearls in 18 carat gold. So if you're thinking about investing in some timeless
jewelry, then do check out Gingerberry. All the info will be below. The links of the pieces I'm
wearing and the links to their site. And do not forget that Lid 15 discount code. Tip number three
is a headband with oval sunglasses. Now we definitely have seen Carolyn Bessette in this
iconic combination, but I just love this together. And I think particularly you kind of need your hair
back for this, maybe in a sleek low bun or just a kind of bun at the back. But I love the headband
with the ovals. I just think it looks so chic and it just brings something to your outfit while still
looking very understated. So I've paired these accessories with some very simple clothing and I
think you'll see this theme emerging. This 90s style is all about classic pieces with minimal
accessories. It's very easy to recreate and I think that's what I love so much about it
is actually the less the better. So I've just gone for this very simple trench,
straight white jeans. Obviously, as I said before, it's a little bit more about a straight style than
a wide leg. And also a boot cut was very in the 90s. I don't really have many boot cut things,
but just something to note. I've gone for this kind of minimal tote bag, black ballet flats.
And I think just as I mentioned at the beginning, this just feels a very now outfit that doesn't
feel dated at all. It's just very, very classic. And I've still got my little diamond studs in,
which I think because we've got this, keep your earrings very, very minimal and simple. And that's
why the diamond studs work so well. On to tip number four, straight leg jeans and flip flops.
This is again, literally the easiest combination. Most of us probably already have these pieces in
our wardrobes. It's all about the styling and just your most simple, classic wardrobe basics,
people. It's back to that capsule wardrobe, but just worn in this 90s way. And one way is with
the flip flops. So we saw that so much in the 90s. The most simple, slightly casual shoes. And
I think that's what all the outfits have. It's a bit of a nod to being casual and undone,
but because it's so simple, it feels polished. So it's kind of those things mixing together.
Black blazer, white t-shirt. I've got this slouchy tote bag just to throw on. You can put your oval
sunglasses with this, your minimal jewelry, and then yeah, just any straight leg jeans that you've
got. I've gone for these slightly looser ones. I do think they've got a bit more of a modern
touch to them. They're also not too cropped, which I think look great against the flip flops.
But we saw so many, we've seen this flip flop trend for the past few years. It's not going
anywhere. Just a really simple black leather. And I really just think it elevates your outfits and
makes them look modern and 90s at the same time. Tip number five is to style a court shoe.
So by this, I mean like a full shoe heel. I feel like this is very 90s. Now I would say in general,
the skirts were probably a bit shorter than this in the 90s, like a knee length with the court
shoe, but I don't have one. So I'm creating this look with something I do already have,
and you can do it with your straight maxi skirts. You could do it with a slip skirt if you wanted to
as well. But this full shoe definitely gives that 90s nod. If you wanted to do a more modern version
of this, you could go for a very, very pointed court shoe with quite a high vamp. So that's
this bit here. That looks really chic and elegant, but it definitely needs to be this full shoe,
a proper high heel, and it definitely gives that 90s look. And my mum helped me come up with these
because obviously she was there more than I was in the 90s. I was born in 95. So I can kind of
remember the 90s a bit, but I was more like noughties when I started, you know, really loving
clothes and fashion was when I was a little bit older in the noughties. But my mum really helped
me kind of remember these things. And she said a court shoe was definitely something a lot of
people wore. Tip number six is the collarless blazer. I do think this is very synonymous with
the 90s, but it's so in at the moment. I wouldn't even call this a trend piece because I do feel
like it's quite timeless. But if you wanted to add something to your wardrobe that had that timeless
look, but also felt quite modern and current, a collarless blazer would be a great piece to add.
I love it with jeans. I do feel like the looser jeans just give it a slightly more updated look.
I've gone for classic loafers with this, my Todd's loafers, which I've had for years. Again, all about
those classic pieces with this 90s look. This is from a brand called Cush, a Ukrainian brand.
They have some beautiful pieces on their site. So cool and modern. I just love the shape of this.
I think with the slightly bigger shoulders as well, it gives that more early nineties feel,
but then it's very minimal with minimal buttons. The collar is very minimal. And I think that's why
the collarless blazer worked so well then is because it's not got any detail on it. It's not
got the collar to bring it detail. So yeah, love this whole look. Very easy to create. And I think
what I love most about this 90s trend is that it's so simple that you don't need to overthink it at
all. Finally, a big trope of this 90s dressing is all slim fitting. So that is tip number seven.
I do think that all slim fitting is very chic and elegant. Obviously we have seen oversized
around for a long time now. And I do think there are elements of 90s that can be oversized,
especially things like trench coats and looser things like that. A lot of men's clothes are
very oversized then too. Big shirts and those more masculine pieces. But they wear a lot of
these very slim fitting outfits. Now, the reason I think this works is because of the kick flare.
It just brings some contrast to the look and style is so nuanced and subtle. These little tiny
details to the balance of the outfit really make a difference. So if you're not sure about the all
slim fitting, then try going for a kick flare like this. Also, by the way, capris massive in the
90s and early noughties. I used to have capris when I was younger and I loved them so much.
But if you wanted to do these trousers but felt a bit uncomfortable doing the whole tight look,
then add your oversized blazer to the top of this and it makes a really nice chic going out
look. So there are ways to adapt this if the all fitting is not quite your style and it still has
that 90s nod and that minimalism to it. But I've gone for this boat neck top and I think I've
dropped quite a few little extra tips through this video of things to look out for. And I'd say
a boat neck with like a sleeveless, like almost like a boat neck tank top was definitely a big
90s thing. A bit like the tank top with the high neck. The boat neck was also a big thing back
then. So a nice fitted, but crucially these things are not tight. They're not pulling me in. I don't
feel uncomfortable. We've got a bit of slouch to the top. It's not tight fitting, it's slimmer
fitting. And then the cute little capri pants with the kick flare to give some balance. And then
these minimal heels, something like this will be so useful in your wardrobe. I think I maybe got
these two years ago and obviously I'm still bringing them back out this spring and will
be wearing them all season. So I'll try and find alternatives, anything that's older. A lot of
these pieces are just pieces I've had in my wardrobe for a while because they fit this trend
so nicely. These classics that I just keep in my wardrobe all the time. So I will link what I can
below as well as all the gingiberry pieces. But I hope you've enjoyed this video. I hope you've got
some useful tips. I just think this is such a nice, chic, still modern way of dressing. And I love
that we're seeing it come with a really big bang this season. So I hope you enjoyed it as much as
I enjoyed putting the outfits together. Do subscribe before you leave and I will see you in my next one.
Bye.
