She’s been in the public eye for decades without any major controversies, and yet there might be a more scandalous side to America’s sweetheart. Julia Roberts has had plenty of highly-publicized relationships over the years, and while she has come out of all of them with her lovable image intact, some people have read between the lines and thought that Roberts actually ended up looking like the villain. Roberts herself once admitted that she used to be pretty selfish in the early days of her superstardom, so there might be at least some basis for this argument.
Let’s take a look at the nasty truth about Julia Roberts.
For most of her career, Oscar-winning actress Julia Roberts has been considered America's
sweetheart. But while she may be red carpet royalty, there's allegedly a darker side to
this A-list star. These are the controversial moments that tarnished her Tinseltown crown.
We were young, and we were both very much in love,
and we had decided that we wanted to get married."
In 1991, Roberts was set to marry Kiefer Sutherland, but she called off the engagement
just three days before the wedding because, according to the New York Daily News,
Roberts allegedly thought her fiancé was cheating on her.
"...and I think it took a lot of courage to be able to say I can't do this."
But it was what Julia Roberts did immediately after she ended the relationship that raised
eyebrows. According to People, she jetted to Ireland to be comforted by actor Jason Patrick,
a close friend of Sutherland. On the eve of what would have been her wedding day,
she went to a photoshoot reportedly wearing what looked like Patrick's favorite cap.
Roberts married country singer Lyle Lovett in 1993 after a three-week courtship. The odd couple
seemed to share a sweet romance, but just 21 months later, the pair issued a brief statement
to announce their separation.
"...the key moment, she said, came when she realized that
she was Julia Roberts and that she was married to Lyle Lovett."
But as far as timing goes, it seemed like Lovett got the short end of the stick.
Roberts was in London shooting Mary Reilly, while Lovett was in Houston recovering from
a motorcycle accident.
"...but what you're saying is you're never afraid of yourself."
"...no sir, I didn't say that."
Though the statement was a joint affair, fans felt like a doting Lovett had been put out to
pasture as his wife's fame soared. Roberts has been accused of throwing shade with her fashion
choices more than once. She reportedly started dating now-husband Danny Moder in 2000, while
Moder was still married to his first wife, makeup artist Vera Steinberg.
"...he's my husband and I want him to think I'm awesome."
In 2001, Roberts was spotted by paparazzi wearing a t-shirt that read, quote,
"'Alo Vera.'"
"...that was the first thing that came to my shallow mind."
But Roberts never expressed remorse for the tee, later telling Oprah,
"...I stand by my t-shirt. That's the problem with the tabloid press,
they dramatize these things until there's a state of frenzy.
Was that just a random graphic t-shirt moment or another sick burn? We may never know."
Rumor has it that Roberts allegedly didn't take much issue with pursuing
Moder while he was married, but the A-list actress supposedly did worry
about her reputation taking a hit because of it. According to Radar Online,
Roberts may have offered Moder's future ex-wife $100,000 to divorce him.
Okay, first of all, that is a absolutely atrocious introduction to my story."
Needless to say, an insider told Life & Style that Roberts was mortified by the
Homewrecker label she'd been slapped with, calling it, quote, an absolute PR disaster.
Some sources claimed Roberts' focus on family life and charity work was born
of a desire to combat the media's portrayal of her as a villain.
"...Tea, Julia?"
"...Yes, please."
One insider told the mag,
"...being as down-to-earth and un-Hollywood as possible has made Hollywood embrace Julia again."
"...This is the sound of progress."
Roberts and Nick Nolte fizzled onscreen in their 94-rom-com I Love Trouble,
and they allegedly lacked chemistry offscreen, too, according to the LA Times.
Tempers flared early on, peppered with a few Roberts tantrums along the way.
Some on the set claimed Nolte became so annoyed with her attitude that he would
do things to agitate her even more. The discord became so intense,
sources say the two played more to stand-ins than to each other.
"...First day on the job?"
"...No, it's not my first day on the job."
"...Second?"
Fifteen years later, Roberts allegedly mocked her former co-star on The Late Show with David
Letterman. She didn't say who she was poking fun at, but she had a lot of folks pointing
and laughing at Nolte.
"...You have zero chance of scoring here, trust me."
They've been married since 2002 and have three kids, but Roberts reportedly has trust issues
with Moder. Celeb Dirty Laundry claimed Roberts fears he's cheating on her and will eventually
leave her.
"...Surfing is his girlfriend, and I am his wife. And that seems to be working out."
The gossip site reported that in order for Moder to have his own surfing retreat while
still being close to their kids, Roberts supposedly
"...spent about $7 million on a house across the street from the couple's
mansion on the beach in Malibu."
Rumors that the relationship is on the rocks have been circulating for years,
but it's worth noting that the couple have said nothing about divorce.
Though the pair is very private, Roberts said on Gwyneth Paltrow's podcast in 2018,
"...He truly is the best decision I ever made in my entire life was to
hitch my wagon to Danny Moder."
"...That's so romantic."
"...True."
